Runescape has been around much longer then WOW. It's also one of the best free MMO's and is actually quiet fun once your high levelled and a member. It's a good game untill you reach a point where it takes like 500k XP to get to the next level, then it turns into a grindfest, for most people it would be before this though.
The keywords here are high levelled and member.
So to get anything good out of this browser based game you must
a) Grind for months on end
b) Pay money
c) Grind some more
To get anywhere good huge amounts of grinding is needed, it just ruins the game. there's no excitement, except the occasional glimmer as you complete that quest you spent a week grinding enough to do, get your first rune longsword/Dragon longsword/etc or level up so you can craft/mine/smelt that high level ring/ore/armour. Then you have to grind and walk huge distances to be able to make them.

I stopped about... 6 years ago I think.

All my friends stopped about 5 years ago.

Now I think about it, it was full of asinine people.

i used to play it b efore all the crappy updates before the wildy was taken and the new graphics and skills came in. Before all that i would have said that it was great but now its been a few years and its just gone down hill. its probably not "Worst game ever" but along the lines of "Meh and Bad" :)

It used to be my favourite game ever... =D I had a level 100 member and had ton tons of quests, my levels were pretty rounded and I was pretty darn good at doing everything. The quests are easily the best of any mmo, but the grinding just got to me, so I stopped playing it. I have tried to get back into it since but lack the energy and patience required to get a level 80+ skill.

The quests actually kept me interested for a while and the characters with all their little sub stories were quite interesting. All the little side minigames were pretty awesome, but there was quite a bit of grinding involved. It is still my favorite browser game though, even if I don't play it anymmore.

I tried it for a couple of hours one weekend. It had an interesting crafting system that actually seemed useful (compared to pretty much every mmo on the market) but aside from that it didn't seem to have any real gameplay or major draws for me. Meh

I actually really enjoy Runescape.
I had started playing in high school and my original character is still active for some reason (I'm 25 now, started playing when I was 16). Way back then there was a great community both on the forums and in-game, and I actually ended up involved in a group that ran weekly trivia and other games and gave away all sorts of prizes. I tried getting back into it about a year ago, even tried members, but lately I lack both the free time and the money.

After 9 years I never did get around to finishing the Prince Ali quest...
My account is still active despite long periods of inactivity. I played it back when Everquest was huge and innovative. I had MMO itch that needed to be scratched. It was pretty good but it had a huge scammer problem. I played on despite these assholes. To this day I have a lvl 70 character who can make full mithril and has over a million coins.

Jagex is killing Runescape - making it worse. It used to be fun (or maybe it's because I was 14?) but I've tried it a few days recently and the gameplay, although smooth, annoys me.

It's a good beginner MMO, I'll say that, but it wares off pretty fast.

All my friends were on it, but higher levels than me but they helped me by giving me free stuff and it felt good to have friends that would readily GIVE you a full mithril get-up.

The quests were fun, the grinding was fun (if you had friends to do it with), and it had a strange sence of humour about itself :p

But after three of four years, i just stopped. i dont know why...i just stopped.

And from what ive heard from some of my friends who still play it, Jagex have changed so mutch about it, thats is not even reconisable to its former, Nostalgic, glory. But it was fun while it lasted :)

I played it like 4 years ago, but after the Wilderness was taken away from free players, I quit.

PKing people was the best thing on the game, that's what kept me grinding for those rune fulls and pure toons.

A lot of people quit at the same time, like 50%(not confirmed) of the Runescape population when Wild was stripped from us freebies.

It was about 0.5%.

You can still kill people.

To be honest I got bored the moment I got killed, I was thinking to myself ''well this is a load of bollocks'', so I quit, that and the fact that every character in the game looked like a reject from Trumpton town.
