Half decent Blue ray player -149CAD
Total 200CAD

Xbox 360 199CAD
If you're going to give advice on systems, at least compare the prices of consoles with similar features, not random models.
If you're going to compare on similar features then it's Xbox 360 S 250GB - $300, 3 year product service plan $80, 4 years Xbox Live Gold - $240, Play & Charge Kit - $20 - total $640. Exact same features with the PS3 except lasting twice as long, $350, and that's not even counting Blu-Ray and features the 360 doesn't have at all.

Price comparisons never turn out favourably for the 360 unless it's this:

Xbox 360 Arcade - $150
Xbox Live Silver - $0
VGA HD Cable from Monoprice - $13
RCA->3.5mm adaptor from a dollar store - $1
Using current LCD monitor - $0
Using current speakers - $0
Using already owned rechargable batteries - $0
HDD on clearance or second hand - $20

Total cost: $184 + tax.

But as I'm sure you've noticed, you can't get the 360 Arcade most places anymore.

So it's Xbox 360 Super Elite - $250
VGA HD Cable - $13
RCA-3.5mm - $1
Existing monitor - $0
Existing Speakers - $0
Xbox Live Silver - $0

Total cost $264 + tax.

Sadly though, it's perfectly viable to get a second hand PS3 as they're quite reliable and no reason to think there's anything faulty if they're being sold (unless it's a 4usb model from gamestop). You're looking at $150-$185 for an 80GB PS3 second hand, without tax.

I'm not one for big arguments on console wars.
I've got a PS3, and it does it for me.
Also free online play helps.

Xbox. Not only for the exclusives, but Xbox Live itself is just such a better service that offers so, so, so much more. It is a much more social experience as well. Do yourself a favor and go with it.
how is it any better, bare in mind you're paying for most of that stuff
Indeed you do have to pay, $5 a month. Harsh, I know. I have had this argument way too many times before, I'm not having it again. The only defense the PS3 ever has is that you don't have to pay. Live is far superior.
again you've avoided saying how its superior, care to answer now? and yeh free online is ONE of the upsides of having a ps3, the others being, much better hardware, lower failure rate and IMO better exclusives

Thorough price breakdown...
Or, to save time, you could have said:

Ps3 299CAD
Half decent Blue ray player -149CAD
Total 150CAD

Xbox 360 299CAD

He made the 360 look more of a good deal than it actually is. I'm choosing it, but for my own reasons. ;)
Yeah, that was some intentional skewing on his part. Back when I bought my system, in 2006, 360 was the better deal, by far. Now the systems are so similar that price shouldn't even factor into it anymore. Get what you want to play. I'd have a PS3 now if I had the time for it. I can't even keep up with the 360 releases.

Sorry i honestly thought that was the cost of the newest 360 as that is what they were advertising on the main page. It wasn't intentional, i just didn't realize there were multiple current versions.

I thought that was the newest version. Forgive me but it wasn't intentional.

PC, because when consoles inevitably die you can't go to a store and buy a part and make your console run better than it did before it died.
Also, a lot of hardware components also come with more than a 1 year warranty.

Sure it takes a little time and it's not as easy as walking into a store, grabbing a box, paying, and done... but I believe its more rewarding.

And besides, you can build yourself a damn nice gaming pc for under $350.

My view might be jaded though... because I've had 2 360s, a ps3, and a Wii fail on me.
But out of the 3, I got more enjoyment from my ps3, mainly because I had CoD4 for it... and because both my 360s died before my ps3 did...

It depends on what you like more. Be sure to take a look at the exclusives for each console first. Here are some examples:

360: The Gears of War Trilogy, The Halo Series, Mass Effect 2, the Forza racing sims, Alan Wake.
PS3: MGS4, Heavy Rain, The Gran Turismo games,God of War games, Resistance games, Uncharted games, Ratchet and Clank games, Little Big Planet, Killzone 2, and InFamous.

Don't let Kinect or Move tip your opinion. They won't be boasting anything decent for another year or so. And don't let Xbox Live fool you. Just because you need to pay for Gold, doesn't make inferior to PSN. Plus Xbox Live looks much better IMO.

Let me tell you about some games to look forward to in 2011: Dead Space 2, Red Faction: Armageddon, Bulletstorm, Dragon Age 2, and Gears of War 3, Killzone 3, Resistance 3, new Ratchet and Clank game, Yakuza 4, Final Fantasy XIV, InFamous 2, SOCOM 4 an Crysis 2 (but if you have a high end pc get it on that).

EDIT: If you're in the market for a 360 then get the Slim. It's quieter, has built in wireless, has a 250GB HD and is less prone to RRoD than the original. Plus is has some great combo deals and will undoubtably give you a run for your money.

Thank you for the additions, but I honestly CBF to put all those in there in the first place. And yes I did forget that ME2 comes out on the PS3 next year. My bad.

What he was doing was comparing the price of the PS3 as if it didn't have a Blu-Ray player to the price of a 360, in essence pointing out that any extra cost of the PS3 goes into that.

This doesn't even apply, he's talking about fighting games, and the first things you look at are hardware quality, price and input. Exclusives only matter after you're satisfied with hardware quality, able to deal with the price and like the input method.

Correct, don't let it fool you, just because you pay for Xbox Live Gold doesn't mean you're actually getting anything for your money. You're paying for the privilege of connecting peer to peer rather than having dedicated servers.

If you're in the market for a 360, the S is the last one you want to get. It isn't less prone to RRoDs, they just took out the LEDs that exhibit the symptoms, they didn't change anything on a design level to make it less prone to hardware failure, and they changed the warranty from 3 years to 1 year which suggests to me that it's more prone rather than less. If you get an outgoing arcade or super elite you at least have the 3 year warranty and a good 2 year track record of Jasper systems not having high hardware failure rates. Go with a new Xbox 360 S and you're the guinea pig.

I'm not sure what you're getting at here, Robbie. As I said, I've had this same exact argument a thousand times and I'm not having it again. Xbox Live is superior but the downside is, you have to pay for it. PS3 gamers have said it themselves for fuck's sake! It's not like I'm hiding some secret and I don't want to admit that Live is inferior. It sure as hell isn't, it has been said millions of times. You have to pay for it for a reason. Microsoft has put a whole hell of a lot more time and funding into it than Sony has in theirs. Sony is not this benevolent company that lets you do it for free. It's because they can afford to let you use it for free. I'm not going to sit here and explain it to you; the mere fact you're still arguing over this just shows that you will not listen to any logic. I'm done with this argument, it's pointless. And you can go ahead and reply "see he still didn't say why!", I'm not going to respond. I'm not insulting anything about your precious PS3, I'm simply stating that Xbox Live has much more to it then the Playstation Network.

Ok, could be an honest mistake. All is forgiven. I apologize if I immediately suspect any incorrect info in a vs thread as being intentionally spiteful.

For the most part though when you do model comparisons you have to go Elite vs Slim. Same price point, most of the same functionality. The problem with the Arcade is that out of the box you can't play most disc-based games for it. It's exclusively designed as a push to get more people onto live, or to think they're saving money just getting the basic and buying a hard drive for it.

Let me make this short and sweet as I have been asked this several times.
PS3 is better. Has better exclusive games, Blue-Ray, Free online gaming, full access internet, more memory, controllers dont need batteries, ect..... And if that doesn't convince you go to IGN.com. They just had a comparison test for the New 360 slim vrs PS3 slim. PS3 won 7 out of 10.

Yea, i really am sorry and didn't mean to be misleading, the ad only called it a Xbox 360.

The arcade sounds like a rip off if it can't play discs.

Holy crap. I'm scared to read some of the hateful comments that will imminently be posted here. O.O

Well, if I had to answer, I'd say PS3 because I have one and it's great. But I don't have a 360 so I can't really say I prefer one over the other.

Gah.

Get a Gameboy. Can't go wrong there.

What are you on about? Or are you confusing disc with disk?
