It would just be a mess if it was banned entirely.

But I am all for banning it in public places, I feel really sick when I smell cigarette smoke. And people aren't very considerate in where they smoke, so.

I don't think it should be illegal, but I do think it should be illegal to stink of the stuff and then sit near me on a bus.

The problem with smoking cigarettes, as opposed to other drugs, is that when one person makes the choice to smoke, he isn't just hurting himself, but others around him. Second-hand smoke has pretty bad effects on those around the smoker, especially if they live with the smoker. Therefore, any decision to smoke cigarettes is not just a personal decision. I would support a ban on smoking in public places. If you decide you want to hurt yourself, go ahead, but don't force others to breathe your smoke.

No. If smoking is banned then drinking has to be banned as well.
Drinking doesn't harm your health unless you overdo it. Smoking harms you regardless of amount smoked.
Alcohol is a danger to everyone, from drink driving to drunken assaults.

It's people that should be made illegal.

I'd say yes, ban that shit. People say it only creates more illegal smokers, well yes, but it also removes a large chunk of existing "legal" ones, because not every smoker is so strongly addicted they will rather break the law than overcome their addictions.

And lol, people making conscious choices for themselves? Please, this is the 21st century, science has proven that people are stupid.

In North Carolina, smoking has been banned in restaurants and strongly discouraged in public places (offices, etc) It's ironic since there's so much tobacco production here but I think it's a good balance. People can still choose to smoke while not harming others with secondhand smoke.

It should not be illegal. It is every person's personal responsibility to CHOOSE to not smoke. It is like drinking soda, it is bad for you in every way.

Pretty sure alcohol harms you whether you drink a lot or a little, just like smoking.
No. Not even close. Drinking moderately is good for your health in fact.
EcksTeaSea said:
Oh right I forgot, because just because drinking doesn't harm you right away(lie), its a lot worse than smoking. Keep on drinking then and end up in the same boat with cancer as a smoker. Or keep on drinking and screw up and go drive. Like smoking over time will cause issues, so will drinking.
I never said smoking should or shouldn't be banned, I just said that alcohol is healthier than smoking.
Hasn't been in an A&E ward on a saturday night before.

Smoking in moderation is perfectly healthy, the lungs have the capacity to clean themselves. Overindulgence is where recreational drugs start causing long term issues, tobacco is no different.

In terms of damage done to society by users of the the drug, alcohol is way out on top. There really would be no justification for tobacco being criminalized with alcohol staying as is.

Maybe smoking shouldn't be made illegal, but anyone who just happens to smoke near people who don't want to be poisoned by that crap should be shot.
That is kinda fair. Free to kill yourself that way, but start to kill others, and we finish killing you immediately.
So no, no ban, just stay the hell away from non-smokers while smoking, unless they go to you.

If im in an area where it's legal for me to smoke, then im perfectly within my fucking rights to smoke there. If you don't like it, you can fuck off. If someone is doing something that you find annoying, you either talk to them like a civilized human being or you move away. If you're annoyed it's your problem, no one elses. And before you come up with some bullshit about passive smoke, unless you're indoors or in a packed smoking area, the air will be sufficiently ventilated for you to be unaffected.

No one is obliged to make sure they aren't annoying you. The world doesn't revolve around you.

No. Sure smoking for years might give you certain types of cancer. However vast quantities of food will kill you as well. Maybe food should be outlawed. Yeah I know I am trying to be annoying but seriously come on.

We tried this with alcohol, didn't work out so well. This would also completely destroy the economies of a couple states.

So people should be able to choose anything destructive to themselves or others as they wish? So if a person were to go on an armed rampage in the streets thats their choice and should not be illegal?

Frankly, I love smoking. I was a 20+ stone teenager before I started smoking, and having tried both means of guaranteeing titanic heart failure, I prefer the one that means I can wear things other than elastic-waisted tracksuits and marquee sized t-shirts.

Some people just need to do something with their hands, and sometimes it's essentially a choice between endless grazing or having to spend your lunch breaks sitting in the rain.

Keep it legal if you want, but if I'm not smoking firsthand, I sure as hell don't want to smoke secondhand, assholes.

It'll be impossible to make smoking illegal now.

Plus the UK government make a shit load of money taxing it, they love smokers!

When it comes to freedoms like this, money is often the best way to settle it. That's how the drinking age is (almost) universally 21 here in the U.S.- the federal government (which couldn't directly legislate the drinking age) denied transportation funding to states that didn't make the age 21.

Do the same thing with cigarette taxes- crank 'em up. Sin taxes raise revenue and discourage bad behaviors.

I think most smoking should be heavily taxed until it is universally socially unacceptable.

i'm fine with people smoking weed, but cigarettes are disgusting and you shouldn't smoke them where people can see you. You should be too ashamed. But it is reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally fun to cough at smokers when running by them
What makes marajuana better than cigarettes? Marajuana is in fact worse for your lungs and overall health than cigarettes are. Big gaping hole in your argument.
Might wanna check your facts there broseph. No cases of solely marijuana related lung cancer have been reported yet, and heavy users of weed show no sign of obstruction within their lungs airways. Obviously inhaling burnt plant matter into your lungs is never healthy, but since marijuana users tend to inhale less smoke in general than tobacco smokers, there's even less chance of problems arising.

If I was to ban one drug out there (any drug I like) then it wouldn't be cigarettes, it would be alchohol (and yes, alchohol is a drug).

As Bill Hicks once said, 'someone get's really loud or violent at a football match, what are they? Drunk'.

I live in Canada, where it's already illegal to smoke in public places and cigarettes are heavily taxed. I have to say, it's really stopping people from starting to smoke.

Sure, why not make them totally illegal, I support doing so by raising the legal smoking age by 1 year every year until everyone who can legally smoke is dead.

I find it odd that no one who has argued in favour of cigarettes has raised one reason WHY they should be legal where other similar drugs (some arguably less harmful) are not.

No for the same reason that pot should be legal same with cocaine and meth it's called personal choice. and making something illegal has never stop anyone from doing it. In fact i think making something illegal makes them more taboo and the "rebel" thing to do with pulls more kids into it.
