As a fan of survival horror, I recently purchased Silent Hill 2. I'm enjoying the game, but it really isn't doing all that much for me. I'm almost through the apartments, and would like to know if it picks up after a little while or if I should just return it and get another game.

Edit: Sorry guys, didn't realize I'd get so many responses!
I returned the game and got R&C: Size Matters and Daxter.
By doing this, I probably pissed a lot of people off, but I guess SH2 just wasn't for me.

Do you know about the ending? If not, I suggest you keep playing. If the apartments are where I think they are, you're only begining the game. Wait till it gets dark in the game. Also, play the game itself at night. I literally had to turn the game off and turn on a light after doing that.

If you know about the ending, then it ruins the suspense of the game, which kills it. Still, I would hang on to it as it is a gem. Plus, it's fun to go back and play every now and then.

You can NOT judge Silent Hill 2, before you've played it through. It's like trying to divide by zero...
This.
You can't fully appreciate it till you've completed the game from start to end.
The apartments is probably the most annoying part of a game but it's well worth getting past it.
The game would be excellent if it wasn't for the person who thought of the puzzels in it.

I think people take it for granted that SH2 is a good represention of S-Horror. For one thing You have unlimited inventory (or at least seemingly unlimited) which should be illegal in a survival game. Monsters are unthreatening and the bosses are just terrible. And most dammingly the game is realy easy and generous with ammo and health. Over all it's a pretty mediocre game but if you have the time you should finish it for the "twist" near the end. The game is really short!

I personally couldn;t trade in my copy... Infact I don't trade in any games. But if I did, this wouldn't be one! Stick with it till the end and before long you will want to play it all over again!

I found every aspect of the game, aside from the atmosphere, to be entirely mediocre. Yes, the story is more than you get from most games, but in comparison to any half-decent piece of horror literature (or even the story in Silent Hill: Shattered Memories), the story fails.

I'm actually kind of upset that I played all the way through. I kept expecting it to get better, but it never did.

I like how Sniper Team seems oblivious to the fact that the ending you get is determined by your in-game behavior, if not the items you collect. (There are four serious endings and two joke endings.) Also, this game is regarded by many as the greatest story in the industry thus-far. You'll probably find out why near the end, where it'll all start to make sense.
I believe they were referring to the twist which comes near the end of the game.

Yeah, the puzzles kind of suck since you tend to get stuck in them. However, the apartments are one of the most scary segments in the game.

The apartments and corridors tend to be somewhat claustrophobic, and also a special someone wearing an iconic helmet does one of the most disturbing things in the entire game there (and no, im not talking about the "rape" stuff, im talking about another event).

Personally I thought Shattered Memories story was appalling. It had some nice touches in honesty but failed in the end. Maybe I'm just too much of a fan of the original?

I love Silent Hill 2, the story is the best in the series in my opinion.

Err, "generous with ammo and health"?

Somehow I suspect that your generalization stems from not playing on a hard enough difficulty.

Also, if you claim to be some kind of connoisseur of horror games, why do you focus your comments on the "fighting" in the game?

A good horror game doesn't focus on fighting. In fact, that is the very mistake that the Resident Evil series made in Resident Evil 4 and onwards. Good horror games focus on atmosphere, and Silent Hill 1, 2 and 3 are make up textbook definitions of good horror atmosphere.

The game may not be the scariest (that goes to Silent Hill 1) but is has the best atmosphere in the series and also the most complex story.
There is no way for anyone to catch every single piece of the narrative just by playing it. After I went on silenthillforum I realized that I only understood a 1/4 of the actual game so I highly recommend going there and just searching through the quicklinks on the silent hill 2 thread. It's very enlightening.

I agree. While I love the first and the third game for the fact that they explore the mysique surrounding Silent Hill and why things are the way they are, Silent Hill 2 has the best original story in the series.

Silent Hill is all about experiencing the twisted atmosphere. If you're just playing the game for the sake of killing enemies and action moments, then you're not going to like it.

And if the apartment section already failed leave a few stains in your undies, the rest of the game won't change that.

You weren't scared by the apartments?

No matter, the areas get scarier the farther you get in the game.

What makes the game so amazing is the atmosphere and the story. So if your looking for combat, or good controls, or things making perfect sense, this might not be the game for you.

Edit: You say your a fan of survival horror. What survival horror games did you play?

Finish the game. It is excellent, but it might not be your thing depending. It's more of a psyychological horror than zombies and jump scares a la Resident Evil.

It's a massively important game in the woefully small genre of survival horror. You should complete it, then decide. If nothing else, you'll at least know what people are talking about. Some people, myself included, prefer Silent Hill 3 to it.

*shudder* Agreed.
Now that I remember, the apartments was probably one of the scariest part of the game (haven't played it in a long time).
Also, yes with that moment. That particular moment was beyond terrorfying.
Every meeting with that particular character created pant shitting horror which was only heightened by the fact that you could hear him lumber towards you while you were trying to fumble the controls to actually figure out where to run.
No other game can recreate a moment just like that. : )
