If anyone is doing their part to make sure that governments and corporations think twice about stepping on the little guys (i.e., you and me), it's Anonymous.

I don't always agree with their methods or their mentality, but I can appreciate what seems to be their general objective.

Some things can only be said from an anonymous standpoint. In a world without prejudice or profiling existed, sure, anonymous would be completely unnecessary. Unfortunately, we still live in a world where ideas and perspectives are judged by their sources, due to age, gender, etc, etc. You know the rest.

So Anonymous being used as a way for an idea to be seen as traceless or origin as a way to be accepted without prejudgment I think is not only fair but logically reasonable.

However, someone being anonymous to say things that are rude or upfront when they are unnecessary (e.g. internet chatrooms) is just a way of hiding from the consequences of ones actions, and is not tolerable.

That's the way I see it. Kind of an unusual question, but interesting.

I think there pricks. I'm not going to give an explanation of why because I've already far too many times on this forum already...
Because yes. I like your style.

Oh by the way, i hate you.
Hmm?

I don't know what your saying. Maybe your referring to when I said it was cool that they killed the westbero baptist churches website? Please clarify.
Why should i care to explain?
I GUESS I'M NOT WORTH IT?!?!

*Cough*

Okay then. Fair enough. I'll just be mystified in my ignorance.

I still think that the ones who do the hacking scare the ever-living crap out of me. Like the whole counter hacker thing that I vaguely heard about on the daily show while I wasnt paying full attention to....Probably wrong but I think it was some guy was paid by the government to counter anon and then pretty much had all of his e-mails and private info publicized...is that how it went idk but if they can and do do that at will thats what scares me, just that someone can easily be watching me, i guess after that I sort of saw them as like the big brother of the internet...always watching...
You're up for a dissappointment. They're not internet superheroes, in fact, they don't give a shit about you. (They, as in the group of individuals, hot damn it's tough to say it right)

Just a bunch of kids who hop onto whatever sensationalist news stories are being thrown around, cause some mild inconveniance and then think they are being heroic by protecting freedom or something.
Okay.

They're beyond counter-productive in their "war for the freedom of information". They're doing more harm than good.

I also find them to be highly hypocritical. How can you fight for the freedom to access information, when you're keeping information about yourself a secret?

I can't wait until they die down and the world forgets about them.

As long as they don't cause any inconveniences for me, I don't care.
Though if they go too far, they might do for the word "anonymous" what Hitler did for the swastika (it used to be a symbol for good fortune).
But I doubt they'll go far enough to become known as a group of cyber-terrorists...

Love what they are doing. If the press isn't going to do any reporting anymore, somebody has to do it. And actually important information is going to be venomously withheld by those with a vested interest, but people with money shouldn't be the last word on freedom of information. I applaud Anonymous for going where others dare not tread. Also, they wear V for Vendetta masks, which is clearly AWESOME.

I hope you all realize you're discussing Anonymous as it was mid 2006. Now it's just a bunch of 15-17 year olds posting porn and trying to get posts with identical numbers as the last two digits of their post numbers (A.K.A. dubs). If you don't believe me, go check for yourself.

It's no organization, hell it's barely referred to as Anonymous anymore (except by 13 year olds who are years late and want to be part of a movement so they can tell their friends about it). If you all think it has any influence at all anymore, you're horribly mistaken.

EDIT: Let me put it this way. /b/, the board on 4chan you're probably all referring to, is more akin to Gaia now than what you're discussing.

I was referring to the more public acts, like the ones with the corruption in Wisconsin and Wikileaks, I have no honest idea about them on 4chan as I never go on that site

Not sure, actually. One the one hand, I applaud them for standing up for their beliefs... but something about them creeps me out. Maybe it's the whole faceless army thing that makes me uncomfortable...

Um... Anonymous = 4chan. Whenever you post on there, your name is by default Anonymous, hence the name. Where did you think everything was getting organized? SA?

I'd probably also guess anything public done after 2010 wasn't the work of them, they can't organize anything for shit now. Any group can blame them as an easy out.

Hi, my name is John Doe, I live at 123 made Up Street. I wish to take a stand online against corruption, abuse of power, and suppression of information and human rights. ...oh I've been arrested, well that was short-lived.

Knowing my name is information no-one needs to know. When a government breaks the law and tries to hide it, that's information everyone should know, it's not hypocritical at all.

4chan is arguably the birthplace of Anon. Now the connection is only loose.

I think that describes 99% of /b/ for sure.

I think anyone like you or me who may go to 4chan and just discuss videogames or whatever... Well that's no movement. There is no better cause, i really don't care what /b/ side of the board is doing at any given moment, and don't participate in raids. I'm 26, and i have frankly much better things to be doing!

I mean, can i even say i'm anonymous? I'm anonymous as an individual, but all i use 4chan for is to talk to like minded people on subjects I have an interest in.

Ok now I'm starting to wonder, what does this group of people hope to accomplish, like what do they think will happen in the future from their crusade

I'm really not sure. As of late, I've supported most of what they're doing. And admittedly, a group of anyone and everyone that has no official stance seems like it might be helpful to ordered, free society (assuming that does not become the model for society as a whole). But they also scare me. What they are doing borders on cyber-terrorism, and I don't look forward to seeing where it leads.
