They gotta be soft, but they need some toughness in them so they don't fall apart in your hand.

It depends on the cookie, but I'd rather they skew towards hard. All cookies should be at least hard enough to audibly crack if you fold them in half.

I prefer hard cookies in general but my favourite cookie of all time is a soft one.

hard cookies..that way i can dunk them in Milk and therefore make them soft and more tasty
I love the way a Chips Ahoy disintegrates in the mouth after a good 75 seconds or so in the milk. It's like the industrial glue they use to hold it together just dissolves away and what you're left with is soaked cookie dust and ersatz chocolate chips. Mmm, industrial ingredients.

But when I'm making cookies at home? Bread flour, so they're nice and chewy.

I love soft cookies, but I'll eat any type of cookie really. If the cookies are hard, I dip them in milk, or if they're Oreos, I wait for them to go stale and then they're chewy (and they taste fucking amazing).

I like a nice soft, chewy cookie preferably with a bit of chocolate fudge in the centre of warm, delicious dough.

I am not keen on the hard cookies but I love soft ones. It seems though that supermarkets (at least in Australia) never distinguish between the two, which pisses me off a little because I don't know what type I've bought until I start eating them.

Depends on the cookie flavor, personally I'd kill for a fresh out of the oven Anzac biscuit. They melt in your mouth, but they go hard when they cool, and are surprisingly still good to eat.
Soft choc chip cookies on the other hand aren't my bag at all. I like a good firm dry cookie to maximise my milk absorption.

hard cookies!!!! Soft cookies give me the impression that they need to bake longer.
