Here's my idea for a plot. Sonic goes out for a walk in a nice beautiful woodland. But everything he passes rots and crumbles to bits around him. Then he decides to go hang out at Xbox Land in case doctor Eggman is there. But before he can even enter the door Masterchief stops him, tells him 'no fucking way' Sonic refuses and Master Chief shoots him with his assault rifle. Wrex from Mass effect then breaks Sonics legs and Marcus Fenix curb stomps him. The people of Xbox Land rejoice that the fiend has been slain and they send the message of joy to Playstation Land and Nintendo Land and everyone cheers and they start having fun again. 'Cause Sonic is no more.

What do you think?

re-re-name "Eggman" to "Robotnik" (corrected)
Kill some new Characters, and pick up some old ones? "Ala SATM"
No co-existance with humans
An actual final boss that IS a robot
make the player EARN Super Sonic, and not have it just be part of the story
stick to 2D gameplay

Of your entire poll there were only two options i disagreed with, an open world wouldn't work and sonic should go back to shutting the hell up.

Take a leaf out of sonic 3's book (well, sonic and kucx + sonic 3) and bring back bonus stages for emeralds, that allow you to change almost whenever you like.

As for current gen gameplay, was I alone in thinking that the day stages in sonic unleashed were actually good? yeah, it was so fast you sometimes didn't know that you were about to run right into a spike trap, but that's what makes it entertaining. That's how you take a 2D-platformer and put it in a 3D world.

I think that if sonic team took their heads out their ass and re-released sonic unleahed without the laughable plot and the absurd werehog levels it would have been a good game. look at sonic 1-3 the plot was basically, "Robotniks a bad guy who kidnaps animals and makes them robots, stop him." and it worked. you didn't need a love interest, or eleventy billion subcharacters of even dialogue. It worked off it's simplicity, combine that with current gen graphics (without f*king up the gameplay to do so) and you'd have a winner.

Most everyone thought the daytime stages in Sonic Unleashed was a step in the right direction, and sticking to 2D is what Sonic players are most used to, but I can't help but feel that strict 2D gameplay would be straight up lazy. The only reason why we want it to do so is that so many 3D Sonic games have been FAIL! Sonic represents freedom, and yet we have never really given him that in a video game! That's why I feel an open world would suit him.

Ouch...ouch...That hurt my heart right there...Although I do like the imagery of whatever sonic touches it dries up and withers away...Actually, I think you found the next tedious plot for the next sonic game! But it's not fair to blame the puppet, only the hands pulling the strings must be punished. I'm really starting to think that maybe the people who make Sonic games are the same people who make movies based on videogames...

The effort would probably be futile, but here's what I would do if it were my job to save the franchise. Make the levels run and jump style similar to Mirror's Edge at high speed; add indicators to guide the player along the route that does not involve a blue splat mark on the pavement below: things like chevrons on ramps, trails of rings, and dropoff warnings. Make the level structure reminiscent of older games with several possible routes that lead to the same boss; maybe have some kind of collect 'em all type item that can unlock bonus games or equipment. Mix up level settings, with modern urban, naturalistic, and rustic areas. Two movement modes that you toggle between: free roaming, for stationary bosses and collecting scattered rings and sprint mode, where he's racing toward the goal and your control is more steering than anything else. The boss fights would be long, I'd give them lots of HP, but with one glaring flaw: the possibility of dropping a chaos emerald that sends you into super Sonic mode and lets you do massive damage and shorten the fight. Only one emerald gets dropped per fight and if you miss it you've gotta do it the hard way.

Some of the HUD features like the cliff warnings could come from a Vageta style scouter that Sonic wears. Powered by rings, so having at least one helps protect you from both splatter and projectile style deaths as well as tracking the boss's HP.

I suppose moving back to the core characters couldn't hurt but this is a Sonic game we're talking about here, is the story really a vital part of the experience here? I'd pour all my resources into the game play.

Instead of a scouter, I was thinking like hedgehog reflex, say you're playing on the 360, the border of the screen changes to a button color that must be pressed in a timely manner?

Oh, dear god the world will end. Sonic was a good game when it was a 2D game only. You only had to concentrate on going left and right. But, now you have to watch everything. It is so funny to see a good game go bad, just because the developers had a crazy idea to let us see the back of his head. >:p

Ultimatley, they need to make a game where you're just Sonic. In this respect, Sonic Unleashed was nearly a step in the right direction. You need to be just Sonic, and maybe SUper SOnic at the end. Go back to Sonic Adventure 1 and trim out the additional characters, bring graphics up to date, and have a good set of English speaking voice actors on hand with decent writers and a compelling story which dwells in old time Sonic lore without alienating its audience with cheesiness.

I like this where your going with this, but you should at least be able to unlock Knuckles, and Super Sonic only at the end? I don't think that's enough Super Sonic!

Go back to when it was popular by making it like the old games with much better graphics (Street Fighter does it) and dont clutter the series with characters your gonna hate, just go back to Sonic and Sonic alone.

Actually they kinda sorta killed the chief off at the end of Halo 3 anyway.

Plus I'm sorry I didn't mean to offend you, honestly I apologise the last thing I want to be is a troller. I just really think that Sonic cannot be saved, I respect your belief that Sonic can be saved however.
So seriously my apologies I promise it won't happen again.

P.S by all means kill Mario he's practically a xenophobic stereotype.

LAWL! Hey, thanks for the respect! You don't see too much of that on the web! Anyways, if in the end, Sonic fails, I will just have to accept it and move on to the next anthropomorphic videogame mascot that comes my way... Hey Klonoa comes out on May 5! SCORE!
