we spent the last 30 years in low orbit, and have become too complacent. Yes Im thankful for the mars missions, as we do know now that it is a world we can live on ( and even change if needed) and we can be there in under 10 years....so why the hell don't we have ambitious goals like that that sparked a interest in the field, and led to a boom of new sciences, more students making that shift, and actually gain some demeanor lifting insperation.
in the 60's and 70's there was a phrase that went. " If we could go to the moon, we could_____" implying that if we can get to the moon, there is NOTHING we couldn't do.

Even if you aren't interested in furthering our knowledge of the origins of the universe, amongst other things, there are many advantages to a good space program. The technology developed for big projects like those in the space program eventually trickles down, providing us with better technology at an affordable price. Personally, I care more about the knowledge gained.
Putting attention towards the right things could reap great rewards. Not just for knowledge, but also for resources. As overexaggurated as it is, our planet will inevitably run out of precious resources. Perhaps water or metals. Both are readily accessible in space if one knows where to look, which is where the space program comes in.
There's trillions of dollars to be had in mining galactic bodies (asteroids, planetoids, etc.), plus renewed interest in a life beyond the stars might bring our children's imaginations (and proficiency in mathematics and sciences) back to life. We should bloviate about a future beyond the moon to bring about another planets doom.

NASA gets 0.6% of the US's budget and have been responsible for a lot of the technological advancements outside Europe and Asia. They don't get nearly enough money IMHO.
Well, let's see. The troubles with the Earth are a problem, but there's also this big black thing with lights and dirtballs in it that maybe everyone in the world wanna be a part of one day. And apparently, it's all even larger than people thought it was originally. (How you expand on 'infinite', I don't know, but there we are.) I think, even if we have issues down here, giving up on space would be idiocy.
