It would be such a nice world if every country would cut military budget in favor of space/science/medical research.... eh

we spent the last 30 years in low orbit, and have become too complacent. Yes Im thankful for the mars missions, as we do know now that it is a world we can live on ( and even change if needed) and we can be there in under 10 years....so why the hell don't we have ambitious goals like that that sparked a interest in the field, and led to a boom of new sciences, more students making that shift, and actually gain some demeanor lifting insperation.

in the 60's and 70's there was a phrase that went. " If we could go to the moon, we could_____" implying that if we can get to the moon, there is NOTHING we couldn't do.

sad to see that drive die, and to see everything get wrapped up in bureaucratic red tape.

Not really, i jsut think that money would be better spent on getting to the bottom of the ocean than into space, because lets face it what the hell is so great about space.

If we find out we are the first sentient race and get to be the 'master race' then yes, totally worth it.

Also space is cool so yes.

Also we're gonna out-grow Earth eventually, take THAT ecologists, SPACE is the solution.

Well, given that the only chance humanity has of surviving is ultimately to leave Earth, I'm gonna go with yes.

Im gonna have to say yes,

The next obvious thing to conquer would be space travel and colonizing/build stations on other planets.

There is also the fact we are fucking up our world faster than it can cope.

Stephen Hawking said the only way to keep the human race alive is to move to the stars

Even if you aren't interested in furthering our knowledge of the origins of the universe, amongst other things, there are many advantages to a good space program. The technology developed for big projects like those in the space program eventually trickles down, providing us with better technology at an affordable price. Personally, I care more about the knowledge gained.

Putting attention towards the right things could reap great rewards. Not just for knowledge, but also for resources. As overexaggurated as it is, our planet will inevitably run out of precious resources. Perhaps water or metals. Both are readily accessible in space if one knows where to look, which is where the space program comes in.

There's trillions of dollars to be had in mining galactic bodies (asteroids, planetoids, etc.), plus renewed interest in a life beyond the stars might bring our children's imaginations (and proficiency in mathematics and sciences) back to life. We should bloviate about a future beyond the moon to bring about another planets doom.

Bending light and beaming forth across space-time is a good thing.

Edit: Give yourself a cookie if you get the reference.

Is a space program worth the money that we pour into them if so why or why not?
Pour into it?

NASA has a $17.318 billion annual budget.
The US military budget is $1 trillion annually.

NASA gets 0.6% of the US's budget and have been responsible for a lot of the technological advancements outside Europe and Asia. They don't get nearly enough money IMHO.

Well, let's see. The troubles with the Earth are a problem, but there's also this big black thing with lights and dirtballs in it that maybe everyone in the world wanna be a part of one day. And apparently, it's all even larger than people thought it was originally. (How you expand on 'infinite', I don't know, but there we are.) I think, even if we have issues down here, giving up on space would be idiocy.

Hey! If you're even thinking of standing between humanity and its awesome interstellar empire, think again.

But I'm all for space program. :(

I was making a sarcastic remark that we as a race will destroy/taint everything we set our eyes on.

Sadly, most of what we spend on space now is a phenomenal waste of time.

Give me 100 billion dollars now, i'll figure out this ultralong carbon nanotube thing, we'll build a space elevator, then its off to the damn races.
