EDITY EDIT EDIT; So basicly everyone in the thread has said "Deal with it its worth it" and I probably will. So instead of starting an entirely new thread about basicly the same subject, lets turn this one into just a general discussion of the show, what you liked what you didn't like, and if you have comments about what I was discussing earlier feel free to gimme your two sense about the as well!

Well tonight was the season finale of the Game of Thrones.

I have come to discuss plot elements of the ninth episode, how ever I did want to wait until this episode to see if what happened was set in stone....it was.

Most, if not all, of the rest of this post will be contained inside the spoiler area.

So Ned had his head chopped off! (see I warned you!)

(If your mind is made up and don't care to hear my points, just vote now, if you are on the fence, or are interested in what I have to say please continue reading)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now I have quite a bit to say about this, but I'm not pretending for a minute that my opinion is correct or worth anything. I'm just curious to see how many, if any, other people agree with me.

To me, in the show, Ned was who I invested in, he was important, one of the few decent characters in show. (not that the other actors or writing are bad I just mean his character was a "good guy") I enjoyed all the other plot threads, but I enjoyed them because I wanted to see how they effected Ned.

Killing Ned, to me is like, if in episode 10 of Firefly they shot Mal in the head, or, if in True Blood, they slit Sooki's throat in episode 8. To me he was the main character and without him I have no investment in the show anymore. I'm not attached to the show because he is gone and he was the proxy through which I immersed myself into this world.

Now I know that what happened was true to the book. (I haven't read them but someone told me it happens in the books as well) However, t.v. is a completely different medium then books. In a book it's okay if something like that happens, a narrative can lose an important character and still continue, you have more time (and more description) to get more attached to other characters and be comfortable with a loss like that. Also books can take a lot longer than a show to get through and books can be sprawling epics that continue through multiple books, so you can deal with it better. With only 10 hours so far, and the cut the (IMO) main character out, than you haven't been able to invest in the others as much and lose interest. Also in the True Blood books
Lafayette
dies but they didn't kill him in the show, in the Walking Dead comics
Shane
died way early but they kept him alive in the show. They could have written around Ned's death.

I want you to know where I'm coming from. I LOVED the show, episodes 1-8 was some of the BEST television I've seen in a long. I was starving for the next episode the second the last had ended. I am very very sad that I feel the way I do now, but I can't help it, I just don't care about the rest of plot anymore.

I hate all of the Lannisters, except Tyrion (because to me they were the antagonists, but i liked Tyrion's intelligence and wit.)

I really enjoyed the Dothraki story line but now that doesn't seem to go anywhere, aside from the dragon stuff (which is neat but not enough to hold me)

the rest of the stark family is okay but I without Ned they seem trivial to me,

and I don't care about the White Walker plot because I only cared because I wanted to see Ned fight them to begin with.

In summation I will not be tuning in next season.

I know this is long and I'll probably get quite a few TL;DR but I wanted to make a case so those who read it all thank you to those that didn't, oh well, I wouldn't have changed you're mind anyways. right?

Please feel free to continue discussion!

The books get absolutely amazing after that event. That is when the real power play fun begins. I would argue that is where the series really begins. The great thing about that series is George R.R. Martin never plays safe. I'm keeping my post vague to avoid spoilers but =0 It is awesome and will make hatred of Joffrey swell.

There are PLENTY of more interesting characters than Ned.

Jon, Asha, Danaerys, Arya, Jaime, Arianna, Victarion, Tyrion...

Their stories are better by fars...Hell even Petry Baelish shows depth. But to put it bluntly: The rest of the series has the interesting battles and soul-shattering moments of pain. The latter of which characterizes the series. "A Storm of Swords" will traumatize you as the reader.

Let me put it this way: I had that scene spoiled for me...it didn't matter. There is one horrifying moment in particular...

You're probably gonna get this a lot, but as a reader of the boks, my response is:

Just wait. :D

It's your decision if you don't tune in, but book two is pretty incredible, so I think you'll be missing out. :D

They could absolutely not have written around Ned's death as it basically provides the jumping-off point for the entire rest of the series. Trust me, without Ned's death the rest of the story wouldn't exist.

Yeah I already didn't for his character at all, now I just wanted to see the bastard pay.
however I would've been okay with it had it happened in episode 2 or 3 or 4. but that far in you accept it and then they ruin it
also
Robert Kirkman has never played it safe he's killed people who you KNEW were safe, he's broken my heart time and again. but the main character (rick grimes) is still kickin so I keep coming back. and I mean Ned was on EVERY SINGLE POSTER lookin bad ass as hell and being awesome, and being made to be the main charcter.
it was just to much leading on for me to deal with ya know?

Well, the over whelming response is "Deal with it, it's worth it." and to be honest stuff at the very end of episode 10 with the fire was pretty cool, and I do want to see the White Walkers.
I just watched episode 9 on Friday and watched ten today. So maybe I just feel this way because I'm still upset. I have almost an entire year before season two and maybe by then it will settle in me and I'll forgive it. I really hope so because I REALLY REALLY LOVED the show. Hopefully time will heal this wound and I will tune in for next season. I really hope it works out that way.

P.S.

Yeah, it is an outrage when that happens, but trust me; this MUST occur for the following events to make any sense or have any context of urgency.
It's also why there are effectively 5+ alternative protagonists; you are kept guessing which one is going to end up as the actual/main protagonist. It retains suspense without eliminating the importance of the character.

In the books, this is why each chapter is prefaced with just that character's name.

A: Not the shows fault, just saying.
B: I'm... 'satisfied'...? with the occurrence.
I mean, it tore me apart when I read it and sat there watching the show with a grim knowledge, but I respect any story that can forge that kind of real reaction.

Apart from that though Arya and John are my favorite characters followed by Tyrion so I think I'll stick around just to see how they evolve.

I'm just going to say that if you want something where none of the good guys/main characters die, you aren't going to find it near A Song of Ice and Fire.

That is true, any kind of story that can pull you in so much that you are actually emotionally effected by a plot event, is a good story, no matter how traumatizing it might be. and dont get me wrong I respect the show and books up and friggin down, I just...that event just hit me really hard and I felt kind of....i dunno what the right word is....i guesse teased is close to it.
but yeah im starting to loosen up a bit on it after what everyone is saying theres like a 70 percent chance ill tune in next season

Well i'm not against a main character dieing or the good guys dying or losing in fact i love it when that happens, most of my favorite movies have the good ending up worse off, it just felt to soon, like we didnt have enough time with character and it felt like it was in vein, like it wasn't a worth anything like oh well it happened for no reason.

I have a feeling that there would be even more rage if he hadn't been killed. I haven't seen much of the show, but I've read the books, and if you can't handle just Ned dying, I'm just gonna warn you now, stop watching. You won't like it.

I don't even know what Game of Thrones is(yeah I'm a noob).I only heard that it was a board game and that they went ahead and made a series of episodes for it.I've tried to check online for the initial plot, but to no avail.

Is it any good? Should I bother looking it up? What do you guys think?

well it was originally a book series and they made a HBO series out of it. It's really really really good, there is a part in the first season that made me want to stop watching, but according to the people who read the book its worth it to keep watching, so yeah I would say watch and if you get upset just remember its necessary and worth it. It should be on DVD in a couple months also all the episodes are on HBO on demand.

How is it that the ending to a Television series(I Still have yet to watch even one episode so i don't know how true this next statement is) that is supposedly pretty truthful to it's source material, which is a book that was published well over a decade ago, can be shocking?

Besides Ned HAD to die, his death is what forced Robb to take the crown of the North and become one of the major power players in the "War of the Multiple Kings" or whatever it's called, if they somehow kept him alive for the sake of the TV show it invalidates the entire book series.

Game of Thrones was nothing but exposition.

See, in other books, this would all be back story and exposition. The author chose (and wisely) to make an entire novel of nothing but character introduction.

But really... Ned was played by Sean Bean. What WERE you expecting, that he'd live and have a happy ending?!?

You KNOW who Sean Bean is, right?
