I am a trekkie so this may come of as somewhat of a Fanboy Rant. This is also my first review to pointers on improvements would be nice.
The new Star Trek movie is in one word, Awesomesauce. now to break that down
Visuals: The style of the new movie is very sleek, it is in fact more refined than any previous incarnation of the Star Trek franchise. The bridge is very bright and well lit, giving a very futuristic feel to the entire situation and the visual style of the consoles and controls are similar to that of the original series but have been refined to the point where any cheesiness disappears. The Effects used for the space battles is utterly amazing, the ships looking as if they are real, and the other effects for Phasers and transporters blend seamlessly with the live action work.
Script: The story is an alternate timeline to original Star Trek canon and sets itself apart very well, having slightly different circumstances entirely change the way that characters react and behave towards one another. A very interesting point of the story is the relationship between two unlikely crew members that helps to show the true conflict within one of said couple. Sorry I ain't saying much on the story I don't wanna get my ass kicked for spoilers. The Script is also littered with lines paying homage to the catchphrases and well known lines of the original series.
Cast: Each member of the bridge crew is amazingly well done, with each of the actors staying true to the character they are playing while bringing their own take to the roles. Christopher Pine playing a Kirk even more Brash and Never-Say-Die than the original Shatner performance. Zachary Quinto plays an utterly superb Spock on comparison with the Nemoys Spock, and in fact shows far better than Nemoy ever did the conflict within the character. Simon Pegg is an interesting Scotty who still presents the character as a near miracle working, spectacle enjoying engineer and his scottish accent cannot be faulted (I would know know I am a Glaswegian). Karl Urban is an excellent choice for bones, and truly looks the part, but sounds even better. His lines are all amazingly delivered and his attitude to everything is presented in the same gruff disliking manner. John Cho plays a fantastic Sulu, and in fact brings more of an action edge to the role, taking part and saving Kirks life in one of the major Ground Based battles.
The entire cast is fantastic, and perfectly brought up to date, with Leonard Nemoy's appearance helping to tie it back to the original series. In particular the scene between Nemoy and Quinto is fantastic, with Quinto looking and sounding very much like a younger version of Nemoy.
This may be a bit of a fanboy rant, but I give this film
10/10
No Really. I loved it that much. As soon as I got home, I ordered a Movie style Phaser from Amazon.
Edit: Thanks for all the Encouragement guys. It will most likely lead to me doing more film reviews.
