I have mixed feelings about this film.

Many people say that the film is great, but from the trailers the film just looks like some unintelligent action flick with loots of CGI explosions and empty characters trimmed to "cool" and that not really what I want from a film, Star Trek or not.

I am a long time Star Trek fan, and you can see from my review how much I enjoyed it. The film while being a lot faster paced is not unintelligent, with the focus still being on the characters, all of whom are well developed.

Very nice, short and punchy. I've never been the biggest Trek fan, and must admit the Shatner era held my attention the least, this however may be worth a look.

I have read a bit about the plot and that doesn't sound that intelligent to me. Compared to my favourite ST film (ST: 6) this one looks like a simple action film with a weak plot. A pity that Star Trek became mainstream now. That was probably the only way to save Star Trek, but imo sometimes it is better to let something die instead of mutilating it.

Seriously? The Undiscovered Country is what you'd call complex?

Dude, that is the weakest Star Trek movie out of all of the TOS ones. Since when is a campy piece of crap a good Star Trek movie?

I finally get it. My fellow 80's Star Trek fans have all gone f'ing insane.

Where have I said that ST 6 is complex? Compared to some mindless action films it might be and from the trailers the new Star Trek does look awfully like a mindless action film to me, but in itself ST6 is not what I would call complex.
The point is that Star Trek never was primarily about action and space combat but more like dramas with spaceships. Sure, later Star Trek films upped the action percentage but it was still mainly about plot and characters.
But all I see in the trailers for the new Star Trek are explosions and characters doing stupid things (the drive car over cliff scene for example). And while it is possible that the rest of the film is different I generally believe that the trailers do give a impression about what the filmmakers considered important.

I liked the movie alot, and I review your review as 8.7/10!

anyway, I grew up with Star Trek Voyager, so that was really my first encounter with star trek, as my mother was a treky, and I remember it from when I was four. I also watched some of The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine before I ever even saw the original Star Trek.

I loved this movie and agree with major critics that gave it very high ratings, and I still cant really get why some people are trying to paint it as some horrendous film. (many of whom havent even seen it themselves, but are angry from comercials)

To those who couldnt care less about star trek(infidels xD) and debate whether or not they'll see it just out of boredom, just go see it, lol. Decide for yourself, and stop letting people with some bias decide for you. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised, but if not, oh well, films are subjective.

Oh, and... Am I the only one who saw this movie and then immediately got the hankering to play Mass Effect?

Saw it yesterday night. Amazing. 2 hours of solid fun, it never got stupid, it never got boring, it never got cheesy, had brilliant pace that kept you constantly on your toes, and had, without doubt, the most unbelievable special effects I have ever seen in a movie. One of the most enjoyable sci-fi action films I've seen since ever. And that's coming from someone that always thought the previous Star Trek series and films were kind of ridiculous and probably aimed at people younger than 16. J.J.Abrams, a clearly brilliant director/producer (Alias, Lost, Cloverfield etc), completely reboots the franchise and presents a new version of Star Trek that is pretty much impossible not to like. I hope he makes many many more.

Huh. While I disapprove of numbers, I must say I am curious. I'll have to watch this when I get back home... along with DBZ Evolution :D
No. no, no, no, no, no.

You just really don't wanna go there

OT: Good review, but I can't base it off experience cause I haven't actually seen the movie yet, nor do I really intend to

Short Review:

Star Trek doesn't live up to the past movies that it spawned. Gone are the joyous space battles with lively multiple alien cultures (only a few space fights are presented, only 3 alien cultures touched upon) and we have it replaced with a new story arc for the main character. The main character no longer has found his mother and father murdered and swears revenge, now the character has just lost a father and is dared to do better than him. They completely took out the character of Han Solo and Chewbacca, replacing them with Spock and some Irish dude.

No lightsabers neither, but pistols instead.

In closing, I was completely let down.

I don't understand tbh. So what you are saying is that they ripped off Star Wars? No. No, they did not. Or that you hate all space action films and all action films in general? If that's the case, I'd understand not having fun with this either, although I would wonder what the hell is wrong with you :)

Oh ok, gotcha now :p It's quite funny that my gf told me something similar but actually meant it, she has pretty much never seen anything Star Wars or Star Trek but loved this film and asked me something to the effect of "So will that guy with the black mask (Darth Vader) appear in the sequel or what?" I was quite shocked, asked her if she had spent her whole childhood shipwrecked or something :p

No, my friend! Come back to us! Do not condemn thyself to Hell!
I have no choice in the matter. My writer's spirit inevitably will attract me to this movie: the desire to criticize it into the DIRT is just far too strong.

Thanks guys. Given that most people liked the review, I may start a regular action movie review thingy.

After seeing this the only part which got at me was that the opening was so fantastic and epic that after it i was expecting another amazing scene like it yet it never came. The movie even teased me with the hope of more "Awesomesauce". Though thats only a small gripe otherwise i found it a good movie and would recommend others to see it. Haha i also see another has linked The onionnews to this thread, well i'm going to do that again in case anyone cant be bothered with the tedious task of going up the page: http://www.theonion.com/content/video/trekkies_bash_new_star_trek_film

I'm seeing it on wednesday with my dad. He's a major trekkie but I've never seen an episode. I hope I enjoy it.
