I... I really like Janeway. I had no idea she was so unpopular on the internet, most other Trekkies I know think she's one of the best captains. Ah well.
Either way, much as I love Jeri Ryan and 7, the character was introduced in no small part to provide a bit of eye candy. One look at the padding in that suit can tell you that, and she smacks of "what is this human thing called love?" whenever relationship stuff comes up. Now, I have no problem with 7 at all, she's one of my favourite characters, but I think she'd be wildly inappropriate as Captain.
As for the poll, I love Picard, and Kirk's obviously a classic (I actually particularly like him, and most of TOS characters come to think of it, when he's older in the later movies), but Janeway's always been my personal favourite.

I never thought I would seriously see an argument on witch Star Trek captain is the best but anyway I always liked Picard. I don't know he just seemed to have more to him then the rest. Form Voyager I really liked the Doctor other then that I can't think of much.
I thought the Doctor from Voyager was a great Star Trek character.. and Neelix .. they were my two favourite characters.. and Seven was always the best female character on the crew easily.. but i think my familys favourite star trek character in general is either Luxanna Troi (who is oddly gene roddenberry's wife) and Q lol 
I vote TOS Kirk. Mostly because I grew up before TNG was aired and so for the longest time Kirk was it. To be fair my favorite TOS character is Bester, I mean Chekov.
What they needed to do with Voyager was find decent writers and get some consistency though the seasons. They used the reset switch way to often in Voyager. I can't remember much of Voyager, there was the Doctor Beowulf episode, John Rhys-Davies as Leonardo DaVinci (terrible, shameful episodes), the captain and the helmsman turning into newts and fucking, and Brad Dourif being awesome in a few episodes. Brad Dourif episodes are probably the highlights.

Kirk did NOT know whICH words to EMPASIZE, nor was he very believable AS a leader.
Picard is both somebody I would follow to the ends of the universe, and who's voice was a joy to the ears.
Sisko was a good leader and did have a fair bit of character development over the course of the show.
Janeway had the intelligence of a stone (literally the entire series only happened because she blew up the array before slowly leaving for home, instead of putting bombs with timers in the array after using it to INSTANTLY get home), and a voice as enjoyable to listen to as nails to a chalk board.
I refuse to watch Enterprise on principle, so I can't say much on Archer.
The new Kirk is just an annoying college kid, who's attempts at being "rogue" makes him look more like a douchebag.
With all that considered, I am going with Picard.

But you'll watch a reboot that takes the best part of 2 decades of ST history and wipes it's arse with it in an alternative time line reboot?
Just curious what is the principle that stops you watching Enterprise?
The reality is that all the Star Treks except for TNG and TOS had to resort to late season stunts to keep the interest. Enterprise changed format, from individual story lines to a a prolonged storyline in involving the Xindi
Deep space nine did the same thing with the Dominion War story line
Star Trek Voyager just brought in the eye candy, albeit her story line was actually quite interesting.
Of course it all pales in comparison to Stargate which was just much better, except for SGU which was just a lot of arse and will be, forever, the final nail in SG franchise.
Atlantis was terrible and you should feel terrible for sayin it was better than DS9. I say that and I even liked Atlantis, but good god was it terrible.Laughing Man said:

I loved Voyager, but really it did have a pretty big issue of copyin old characters and tweakin them ever so slightly. On top of that the writin was oddly inconsistent. She'd follow the prime directive to the t all the time, then break it others without a single issue. Sure you could argue that sometimes the benefit of breakin it were so great that to not do it would be suicide (the final storyline comes to mind), but others it was just...meh.
I will say that the characters that actually were good were the absolute best the Trek series had to offer. The Doctor may have been Voyagers Data, but I will defend to death that The Doctor was better to watch than Data ever was.
On the poll, Sisko easily. Both Sisko and Picard have the edge over every other captain in presence and leadership, but Picard loses because of my biggest problem with TNG. Nothin ever changed in TNG. Were there character development episodes? Yes, but it never went anywhere. They were all one-offs, possibly a two part episode and then you never heard from that storyline again. Picard at the beginnin of TNG was the same Picard you saw at the end of TNG (if you exclude movies which, in a two hour movie somehow had more character development than the entirety of the series combined). DS9 didn't suffer from that issue and because of that we actually got to see Sisko grow as a person and a leader through the series.
My best way to describe Archer is he is a poor mans Sisko with a dash of Kirk and the people skills of Janeway.Not G. Ivingname said:

That said, DS9 is probably the ebst series, with Sisko being the number 2 captain. Sure, the first season was kinda crappy (like every other Star Trek series), but seasons 2 through 6 were pure awesome, and includes one of the best episodes in Trials and Tribble-ations [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trials_and_Tribble-ations]. The characters were deep, the show had both long-terma dn short-term plot arcs that all felt well-developed, etc.
And while season 7 was kinda weird, it was still very good television, just not exactly to my tastes.

Not really, considering the fact that B'elana is forced to disable a Maquis sentient missile in the Delta Quadrant that has the power to annihilate an entire planet's population. That she helped build.Hoplon said:

I enjoyed Voyager to an extent but yes, I see your point OP. It would have been more interesting to have a younger captain at odds with the officer turned rogue turned officer that is Chakotay.

To show the difference in writing, the people that were involved with DS9 went on to make Battlestar Galactica. The people that wrote Voyager went on to make Enterprise...
Voyager has an entire episode that is anti-canon. So much so that all the writers don't consider it as part of the canon at all. It is never mentioned again for the rest of the series, even though it should technically have helped them. Breaking the warp 10 barrier. That's all I'm going to say.
