Poll: Star Wars - the correct order?

I'm actually going through the identical scenario with my girlfriend. She's been skeptical of watching the movies because she's seen some of the prequels and thought they were shitty, so I'm going to have her watch the originals first. After she watches the original trilogy, I'll show her the prequels if she really wants to (otherwise it's no big deal).

I'd say 4-6 first, but everyone already knows about Darth Vader and Luke's relationship, so that surprise is ruined. Maybe... Actually watch the original trilogy anyway. Just get the re-mastered disks, because the original special effects of the first films turn them from pretty dramatic into comedies.

I agree man, even the movie poster for episode 1 had little Anakin Skywalker with Darth Vader's shadow. If you didn't understand who Darth Vader was and why he's important to the plot then you would probably have hated the little kid on sight.

But once you see the whole father-son galactic empire stuff play out, the little kid actually becomes a meaningful character, and maybe you could actually enjoy episode 1.

I would say definitely watch 4 5 6 first. To understand who is important and why.
Then you watch 1 2 3 to see how they became who they are.

4-6 first, the prequels are only there to explain 4-6 so some things will seem less significant if you watch them chronologically.

The prequels are fine. They did the action scenes far better than the original 3 did imo.

Well, in the original, Han shot Greedo first. But Lucas thought it made Han look like a bad guy, so in the remastered edition, he made it so that Greedo shot at Han first. Here's the clips:

Besides this thread turning into what I suspected it into turn into, I think I got a few sensible posts here.
Although she most likely knows the biggest spoilable plot points (like Vader being Luke's father) the original trilogy will probably be seen first.
It would have been my first decision anyway, but I was hoping for some confirmation on that.

I don't think the prequels were THAT bad (a lot better than most of the Extended Universe at least), and as far as I know her, she might well like at least 1 and 2.

The movies I'll show her will certainly be the special edition though, mostly because the original effects seem quite awkward, especially since she's seen TV series like Farscape (to which Star Wars simply can't be compared, neither in terms of effects or alien design nor storyline). The special edition looks better, at least.

As for Greebo and Han... I always perceived it as both shooting basically at the same time, and Han just having better reflexes.

Watch 4-6 first, as they actually explain what the Force is and how it works. In the prequels it's just assumed everyone knows about the Force, so they never really explain it (yes there's the midichlorian explanation, but that just makes things more confusing). Watching the prequels first would also ruin Vader's big reveal in The Empire Strikes Back.

After she's seen the original trilogy, make sure to sit her down and give her a disclaimer about the quality of the next three films she's about to see (particularly Episode 2). Once you're satisfied that her expectations are lowered enough, go ahead and play the prequels for her.

Might I recommend that you also watch the Clone Wars cartoon between Episodes 2 and 3? It will help soften the blow, as it's better than the prequels themselves (I'm talking about the 2003-2005 one by Genndy Tartakovsky, not the current series).

This on both points. Most people seem to interpret it as different = ruined.
Many people also use the aimed at children excuse for the New Trilogy, but they fail to realise that they watched the OT as children themselves! It boggles my mind...

I started watching Star Wars on the Phantom Menace, then watched 2, 4, 5, 6 and finally 3 when it came out in cinemas. I thought they all had their great moments, and were all god films in their own regard, and made what you could call 3 good stories.

1-3 had a nice story of its own (but needed some continuation with the whole Vader scene), 4-6 had a good story of its own, and 1-6 also had a good story. As someone said, the hero in the NT was Obi-wan, Hero in OT was Luke, Hero over-arching was Anikan.

And 4-6 first, because it makes everything tie together a little better.

To those saying only the OT, read the OP, and look at yourselves...

4-6 first then 1-3. The first 3 seem to want to explain why 4-6 happened how it did, as opposed to 4-6 showing the continued events from 1-3.

this, i think much more can't be said based on the fact 1-3 seemed to be built specifically FOR 4-6 instead of telling their own story straight forward

There is no other order.

The prequels were a badly written cash in and don't deserve to be part of the legacy. As well as being dull, boring, illogical, retconning and retconning within their own trilogy.

As a separate point, you could show your girlfriend this strange trilogy of films that call themselves Star Wars, in the same way that Highlander 2, 4 and 5 consider themselves Highlander films. Or Hellrazer 3 and 4 do.

As everyone else has said, I would watch 4-6 first, then 1-3. My brother tried to watch the movies from 1-6 with his girlfriend. They didn't get past the second film because she didn't like them. They watched 4-6 on a different day, and she said it would have been better if they watched 4-6 first.
