My experience with this:

first try... huh, it's one of those things where you stare at it then look away onto a blank piece of paper and see a negative image .... hmmm nope it still looks like a jumble of colours when I do that?

read down... seems it's something else. OK. retry.

one minute of staring, having trouble retaining focus and keeping eyes steady on the middle of it. nothing's happening. this is bullshit.

second minute... there's a bit of waviness round the edges

third minOH MY GOD WTF HOW DOES THAT WORK?! *blink* aaaaaand it's back to normal.

That is freaky deaky to the extreme.

Not only was that cool, but it managed to freak out my housemate. Thank you for giving me something to do on my day off.

I'm fairly certain it only faded because my eyes are not meant to remain open and staring so long. When I keep my eyes open for too long, whether I'm moving or stationary, things get blurry.

The solution to alot of peoples problems, and original poster may want to put this in their post, is to get close to the monitor, like within a foot of the screen

This is just weid...
Here's another weird optical illusion I found on the web a few days ago:
When the black-and-white picture changes to the coloured image, keep staring and when it changes again it seems to be a normal picture, but if you look away...

the amazing adaptability of the human body. a strength as much as it is a weakness. theres another really cool one where there are two identical pictures next to each other, but one is purple and the other looks normal. if you stare at the purple one, then quickly look over to the normal one, the normal one will appear bright yellow (or green) for several seconds, because in that short amount of time, your brain actually adapts to that intake of purple light being "normal", and when you look at the different scene it takes a moment for your brain to switch back to white light being "normal", and you see the scene in a different, "compared to purple being normal", way.

First time I've seen that and it's pretty cool.
The only illusion I know is that blob image were after you stare for 1 minute and close your eyes, you will see an iamge of Christ in your close eyes.
Also there is that image of black squares place near to each other but with white spaces. If you look like the corner you will see grey circles but they are not really there.
Lastly there is that spiral of lines and when you look away from the image it look like it's moving.

Wow, that's awesome!
Didn't work the first time, but only took a few seconds the second time. The trick for me seemed to be staring really hard, no blinking and focusing on one spot.

Argh! I can't make it work. I've started at it with and without blinking for ages and it just sits there. Part of it kind of faded a little once or twice but that's about it.
Exactly the same. As soon as it started to fade slightly my eyes auto readjusted or some shit. The blue bits were always clear and fully visible. Even with my face right up to the screen.
