ive recently become a massive MGS fan, i got MGS4 and loved it so i decided to buy the rest. i dont have MGS1 or the PSP spin-offs but im gonna get rising and peacewalker once they are released

anyway back on topic, i love the stealth in MGS. i find it much more satifying than blasting anything that moves in the face (or in the case of headless zombies; the torso)

i dunno what it is that makes it more satifying, i think its the fact that you have to use intelligence and think about each movement like a very elabourate game of chess in which you have 1 peice and they have several hundred.

theres also that element of of sheer terror when you are hiding in a locker or cardboard box and you are genuinly woried if the patrol will notice you .

whats your opinion: do you consider yourself a 'solid snake' or a 'master chief'?

what ever your preference id like to know why

I prefer the run n' gun to be honest. In games like Halo it can be quite a thrill to knock down a billion enemies an just keep going crazy for it.
But then a little stealth every now and then is a good thing.

We're not too keen on Vs threads here, but I haven't seen thiis before so I'll shut up.

I say they're equal [small](Why does no one add it as a poll option by default?)[/small] because stealth can be more satisfying but also more infuritating and a good old gun 'n' run is just as satisfying but can also be infuriating when you get shot up a lot.

I like both equally. I enjoy games such as Painkiller, Halo, HL2 etc for the feeling of power it brings, but I also love being stealthy in Thief, Assassin's Creed etc

I've only just started Deus Ex for the first time, and I'm concentrating on pistols and electronics, to be a stealthy hacker. For my second playthrough, I'll probably go the other way, concentrating on heavy weapons and explosives. And I'm sure I'll enjoy it equally as much.

I like both, usually Run and gun first, so i can get through the story, then stealth, especially games like Hitman

While i dont like being labeled a "solid snake", partly cos i dislike MSG but mostly because that label sounds just wrong. I am, for the most part, always a stealth character. I find it more fun than run n gun. Something about the challenge of killing youre enemy without him knowing that is always awesome.
i too have a dislike for monosodium glutamate, lol im just kidding i know you meant MGS

anyhoo, i just used snake and masterchief as examples of each genre. you might be a fan of splinter cell or tenchu etc

I prefer stealth because It makes me feel superior to the (sometimes) more powerful enemies. But I also enjoy it because I am, much to my pleasent surprise, really good at stealth games while I'm between good and poor for most run'n'gun games.

true, i think that gun'n'run and stealth require different skills. in my opinion these skills ae polar opposites. in gun 'n' run you rely on your reaction time and reflex whereas stealth relies on patience and cunning.

I preffer gun'n'run games...
I don't mind being stealth when doing so doesn't break the flow of the game, but if have to crouch and wait 5 minutes until an enemy turns and starts its pattern again I get bored soon after...

Never saw MGS4 as stealth. Yes, you can be stealthy. But it takes so much effort, as opposed to run'n'gun, which was incredibly easy. that ruined the gameplay for me. I love MGS1, and itøs stealth, but MGS4 was a dissapointment, stealth-wise.

Personally I would have to go with run and gun, but it's tight. I do enjoy stealthing around and so on, but when the AI is particularly dense, or they just walk some short little pattern... well it's a bit like saying you outsmarted all the bricks that you just tricked into becoming part of your new wall.

The stealth part of Assassins creed was good, getting to blend into crowds and so on (if a little unbelievable thanks to the fact that unlike all the other monks you have half a weapons store on your back). I think it was because it was so central to the game, that plus you could approach the situation (almost) any way you wanted so you could actually come up with your own sneaky plan instead of just following someone else's.

But at the end of the day, I really love being pinned down behind a wall being slowly chipped away by thousands of rounds of enemy fire, only to pop out for a short burst and drop them one at a time. It's my favourite part of games and it's a recipe that the developers seem to have down pat. Chest high walls ftw.

Gunning is good if you've got good on-the-fly target selection, but for those of us not high on caffine...

For me it's almost invariably stealth that's my preference. Games like Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow, (Splinter Cell) Chaos Theory and Thief 2: The Metal Age got me hooked on trying to stay hidden and not die. Even in games like Fallout 3 I wander the wastes in the Chinese Stealth Armour. I've never really been a fan of just wandering around with more firepower than the guns of the Navarone. To me it just takes all the immersion out of a game - there is no way that anyone could carry numerous sub-machine guns, along with a sniper rifle, half a dozen pistols and god knows what else to boot. (When playing games like Oblivion and Fallout 3 I'll always try to limit myself to carry only what I deem to be necessary or within some sort of reason.) I did enjoy Half-Life 2 but that was mostly the story; the gameplay was good but I always felt that you had far too many weapons at your disposal at any given time - it's why I've only played it through a couple of times whereas Pandora Tomorrow I've finished on numerous occasions. Also there is the hours played to consider, I generally find that if you are a walking tank then you can breeze through a game in a (comparatively) short space of time whereas if you hiding in a darkened alcove etc. hoping not to be spotted and then trying to work out the patterns of the patrols movement then you have to spend more time playing, so although it can be said that doing that breaks flow or causes the game to move too slowly at times, it does mean that you should get more for your money. And for those who don't like sneaking in the shadows due to it slowing the pace or breaking flow altogether, I think that to play stealth is to have you on edge, worried that if you move you'll be seen - but it only works if you want to play like that, if you don't want to then it's no fun. Also I suppose that for me stealth comes a lot easier than gun 'n' run style games because I play more stealth games than not - I dare say that with a little (more) practice I could learn to be better at games where one plays as a one man army, but for the time being I'm perfectly happy to remain hidden in the cover of darkness.

Use a fucking paragraph dude.
Great Wall Of Text!
That was by no means a wall of text - it's only seventeen lines - it was only a paragraph. I was going to write more (though that would've had a line break in it) but I decided against it. It seems to me that a lot of people are afraid of reading or writing more than just one or two lines, it's kind of disappointing really.

Edit.

I almost always hate stealth, it almost never makes sense. Okay, neither does gun'n'run, but when I'm playing those my brain is turned off anyway so I don't give a shit. Or maybe it's just 'cause I suck at stealth...yeah, that's probably it actually. Why sneak around something you can eviscerate?

They're both entertaining but I'm leaning towards stealth simply because there are less stealth games out there, and I feel they're a good change from the many run 'n gun games.
