yanno, you don't have to download updates to your games. by default it will, you can turn that off.

steam's pretty nice. it's had its issues, but they've mostly all been worked out and fixed up by this point.

So, which competitor to Steam do you work for? Or are you just a butthurt console fanboy jealous that you have to pay for your game updates but PC users get them for free? Or are you just completely opposed to all DRM to the point where even sensible, non-intrusive implementations are evil?

I like steam. It does have the tendency to get on my nerves some times, but it is a fact that I would never have stumbled apon as many great indie games as I have without it. They publish games that noone else would probably touch, and we would never hear about them.

Also, free stuff is always great. ;-)

Honestly, it seems like the only people that dislike Steam are those that have an unnatural hatred of any DRM (even if that DRM also gives you free games, updates, and cloud uploading for your controls/saved games), and those that have been screwed over by some bug.

The fact that those people are such a minority only speaks to how great the platform actually is. Every service is going to have some unsatisfied customers, but I know of very few companies with as much customer loyalty as Valve.

Agreed, I find Steam glitchy as shit. Those people with slow internet buy games from there retail stores and under the box it says "Internet Connection required". Then you have to jump through hoops installing a game when it also requires you to install 1 gigabyte updates..

It's ridiculous.

No, you're wrong. Steam is free in the same way television is free. It's there to advertise products, it gets paid for from the games we purchase. Just like television is paid for by us purchasing products from companies who advertise on television...

The difference is that on steam it's much easier to avoid those advertisements than it is with TV. I wish I just had to click an (x) button to get rid of the commercials for my favorite TV show.

I love it. The games are pretty cheap, especially when on sale, and I have gigabytes free per month. Bout 120 in fact.

So, Steam is my perfect dream. Except for the new layout. I can't talk to 2 people without speaking to the wrong person, let alone the 5 I used to be able to easily manage.

I personally love Steam, and I can understand why some people dislike it. Particularly people who have slow/inconsistent internet access.

The facts are clear though: Easy access to games, instant purchases, no tax (for me at least), no shipping, no lost discs, simple interface, timely automatic updates, friends and community support, tons of sales and discounts, steam cloud. The list goes on. Despite the understandable annoyances some people have with it, the benefits of Steam far outweigh the problems.

You can even disable advertisements altogether through the options menu.

No, you're wrong. Steam is free in the same way television is free. It's there to advertise products, it gets paid for from the games we purchase. Just like television is paid for by us purchasing products from companies who advertise on television...

Disagree -Steam is free in the way the updates are free. On Xbox you actually have to pay for that service. On top of that it has a nice little community which a TV does not have and you used valve games as an example. The 1 GB of content they could easily have realeased as a mappack or expansion claiming money for it. Which you seem to have preffered over them being free. This is like the stupid people who claim Used games is the same as Used cars. Nothing the like.

So you are saying that Steam turning over a profit comes from trees then? And you are trying to twist my words as if I meant that television and Steam are exactly the same which they are not in retrospect, but they are the same in terms of companies paying to keep the 2 going. The companies get that money from the buyer of games thus you are paying for it.

I don't mind it so much anymore, considering it's DRM. I have bought a few games on there and many games for some friends (you know who you are, people) but it has annoyed on more than one occassion, especially when playing MW2 online and it disconnects, reconnects and the game won't detect it, saying "You must be connected to Steam" whilst it is actually connected.

I'm not trying to argue that, the original argument was "Is Steam free?".. I said it's free in the same way television was, the money comes from people who buy the games, steam turn a profit, so steam isn't exactly free.

I prefer EA's method tbh, I would say at least they give you choice and in fact losing disks from EA published games now are not a problem.... so you still have the serial key, there any shouldn't be.

EADM offers similar features (DRM wise) but it's not a priority/requirement, just an option.

I mainly use it to chat to my friends I have there. I sometimes play games I have there as well. I think it's good.

When Steam first came out I hated it. My first encounter with Steam was after buying Half-Life 2 and discovering that despite the fact that I was looking at 4 (or 5 maybe, can't remember) CDs, I needed an internet connection to install the game. This was also back when dial-up was still the predominant connection. Steam itself was still buggy and limited, so my experience was slow, infuriating, and downright unpleasant.

Since then Steam has become an awesome service. I use Steam as an overall hub for all my games, whether I bought them through Steam or not, as well as my default text/voice-chat service. I also now use it to handle the updates to my video card drivers.

I like it, but I haven't run into those update issues. I've only really downloaded older games on it. And it is convenient for that, since most older games are harder to find without sites like steam.

But I don't really use it for my newer games.

It's cheap and gamer-friendly, for the most part. I like it. Although I think they should partner with system requirements lab so I know if I'm up to specs.

Well, it hasn't annoyed me yet with anything stupid and it does make life easier when downloading games and match-making. I'm gonna say it's good with all it's positives, but not great.

I find it is pretty great, apart from when the offline mode stops working. Then I am screwed as have no interwebs at home at the moment.
