Agreed, I find Steam glitchy as shit. Those people with slow internet buy games from there retail stores and under the box it says "Internet Connection required". Then you have to jump through hoops installing a game when it also requires you to install 1 gigabyte updates..

It's ridiculous.

No, you're wrong. Steam is free in the same way television is free. It's there to advertise products, it gets paid for from the games we purchase. Just like television is paid for by us purchasing products from companies who advertise on television...

Disagree -Steam is free in the way the updates are free. On Xbox you actually have to pay for that service. On top of that it has a nice little community which a TV does not have and you used valve games as an example. The 1 GB of content they could easily have realeased as a mappack or expansion claiming money for it. Which you seem to have preffered over them being free. This is like the stupid people who claim Used games is the same as Used cars. Nothing the like.

I'm not trying to argue that, the original argument was "Is Steam free?".. I said it's free in the same way television was, the money comes from people who buy the games, steam turn a profit, so steam isn't exactly free.

And i said that there are enough services on steam as to make it free by itself. The fact that you can add retail games and nonsteam games and use the browser through it makes it a nice little app. And join friends through the community tab is also quite usefull. Saying that steam is only a store is a little closeminded.

I like it for the deals, bought Psychonauts for 2 bucks, and L4D 1&2 for 10, my internet sucks but with deals like that I find it worth it, though I might need to soup up my comp or get better online since I lagged like a ************ when playing online...

I get 1.2mpbs download speeds normally and have 500gb of hard drive space, so I love Steam. I can also play games anywhere on other computers and there's no product keys.

I love my Steam collection. But having a 50Mb/sec broadband helps.

The sales, especially, are a no-brainer for me.

First, for those complaining about having to do huge updates after they bought the game on disc, remember that this isn't Valves fault unless it's actually one of their games. Day one updates are there because the publisher/developer pushed it out the door before it could be fully tested or a problem that emerged after going gold. No matter where you buy games these days you usally need to update. What steam does is streamline this procedure so you don't need to have a downloader installed for every game or have a separate game account at every single publisher.

I'm not trying to argue that, the original argument was "Is Steam free?".. I said it's free in the same way television was, the money comes from people who buy the games, steam turn a profit, so steam isn't exactly free.

For the sake of stopping the argument can't we stop pointing fingers at Steam and instead point out that nothing is ever "free". Somewhere along the line someone has to pay for it. Buying something from Steam is just like buying it from any other store, they need their cut. In the most cases Steam is the cheaper and more easily accessible choice (provided you have a good connection) with the widest selection of games, putting it well ahead of the competitors. Unless developers sell directly from their own website, cutting out the middle man, it doesn't get much freer. (This has been tried a lot, usually doesn't work out.)

I just can't see anyone starting a company that sells products (and provides storage space) at their own expenses and expect nothing back. (If the thread starter has issues with the bandwith use imagine how it's like on Valve's side...)

I like steam. It does have the tendency to get on my nerves some times, but it is a fact that I would never have stumbled apon as many great indie games as I have without it. They publish games that noone else would probably touch, and we would never hear about them.

Also, free stuff is always great. ;-)

Because:

A) It forces me to download updates.
B) IDGAF about multiplayer and patches and balance and nonsense like that, so mostly I just want to start up my computer and play a game. Steam forces me to log in, wait, download updates, wait, update the game, wait. WAIT.
C) I never ever ever buy anything from the internet. I refuse to buy anything I cannot physically touch. Personal preference I guess, but paying for data is about as stupid as it gets. Screw itunes too.
D) Release date checking.
E) I lan sometimes (that's the only time when I do care about multiplayer) and Steam games can't fukn lan.
F) Uuuuuuugh.

Its great! True, the VAC system is a little too sensetive (since every time I get a headshot spree, some annoying kid reports me wrongly for 'aimbotting'), and there isn't the zero-tolerence attitude towards offensive comments that I would like... but other than that, its great!

it never works, its glitchy, and it pisses me the hell off that i have the CDs to play the game but steam is required. if steam is required to play a game, whats the point of buying the game in stores? why is that even an option? shouldnt it just be exclusive to steam? ITS HOLDING MY FUCKING GAMES HOSTAGE!

what puzzles me is it seems like the only reason people like steam is because it sells games cheap. "i just bought this nothing game for no reason other than it was $5." whoop dee fucking doo. steam still sucks.

Yes..Steam, as much as I love Valve I'm not too crazy about steam for a few reasons

Some people do not have the luxery of Gigabytes of data at their disposal, internet is expensive and I have limits, and for some reason games need to be "updated" when you buy them retail and install them , F.E.A.R. 2 is the worst example it ate up at least 1.7 gigabyes

and lets not go into the orange box.....theres not much on the cover that indicates you'll have to go through that whole process (download steam make an account then update the fucking thing ect) at least if you don't know about it

so yes I guess steam is great as an oline store and what ever but for some of us its a real inconvenience, I don't mind having to activate stuff online thats fine but I feel sorry for anyone who buys a game without realising all the trouble they have to go through to play it.

So how do you feel about it?

as far as I'm concerned it is great. I recently had my hard drive fail and had to reinstall my games. Steam made that incredibly easy and I appreciate that. Also the frequent deals they have are really good too.

I like Steam, but I never bought digitally from them, my games just happened to use Steam. (It's because I'm materialistic and like to see a big row of boxes) Although Supreme Commander 2 had to download 3 GB of data (updates) even after disk install. What??? Why do you need that much in updates a week after the game came out? But at least it auto updates games for me.
