So if I lose an arm in a car accident, you're going to tell me I should be happy and cheerful because I could have lost both?

Sorry, but "it could be worse" doesn't ring like a legitimate reason to fake it and just keep smiling when you're not happy.
Fortunately, if you lost one, or even both, of you're arm in a car accident, you can have them replaced with this:

Yeah, the 21st century is awesome. So is free healthcare.

I agree with that, just listen to this song and try to say that you don't feel at least a tiny bit happier after it.

I'd be afraid it would end up more like this:

It's always other people that make me sad yet if I seclude myself I feel lonely and depressed.

SCUMBAG EMOTIONS.

-.-

My best friend cheered me up after a row I had with someone by saying 'I've noticed that it's always intelligent people who like you.' I love my best friend.

Seriously though I have been diagnosed with anxiety, depression and PTSD by a psychiatrist so I have legit issues. I try not to inflict it on other people too much though and go and watch things like this.

(If the bronies haven't cottoned onto this yet I would be very surprised...)

Yep that is an actual leaked song, Daniel Ingram confirmed that he leaked it himself. My bets are it being featured in episode 18, which if you want spoilers is about...

I don't know what you think I'm doing, but I just spent an hour in skyrim swimming and fishing at the same time. Then I used a sawing mill as a makeshift ride by jumping on the log after it comes through the saw. After which I watched rifftrax clips on youtube. And right now I'm watching looney toons. I am happy.

I like how you are trying to convince us to stop wasting time by wasting time on creating this thread that won't change anything. Who are you to say what I should do with my time. If I enjoy philosophical discussions then who are you to say that is wrong. Hell, even if I don't and decide to have them anyway, who are you to say that I should stop. Narcissistic much?

so your saying if your unhappy you should fake happiness instead of facing your problems and finding the source of your unhappiness sure that sounds healthy

OH MY GOD GUYS!

Stop discussing things of worth or intellectual merit! Stop thinking about things that aren't positive! Live a shallow life of beer and football! You don't need knowledge or depth; Ignorance is bliss right? WELL WHY NOT BE BLISSFUL!

OP you are a shallow human being, and of all of the things you listed as "Sad", you are the saddest.

That made me laugh, because I actually someone may have done that on purpose just to joke around. Wouldn't have been as funny though.

That aside. Now, for what I think.

I'm neither happy or sad, I am at peace.

Yes, I know, the world can and is a incredibly depressing and downright sadistic place at times. Yet there is always something that is good and beneficial, no matter how small or insignificant it may appear. Don't think about how something bad happened to you, think how it could have been worse.

I have a good example: On Christmas Eve 2011, I got into a car accident, while pulling into my driveway, I was not the one at fault. I got hit on the drivers side rear passenger door and back wheel. If it happened a fraction-of-a-second earlier... Well, let's just say I most likely wouldn't be here right now.

So, next time something bad happens to you, think about how much worse it could be, and consider yourself lucky that it isn't as bad as it could have been.

I definitely don't doubt that many charities are in it for the wrong reasons, but its hard to make an argument that states we are less equip to deal with the world's problems now than we were a decade ago. Communication has opened up A LOT of opportunities for people to share ideas and solutions internationally and its only logical to conclude that as a whole, if the global stage continues to evolve as a global community that these problems will be solved far faster than they ever have been.

With that said, I am a tragic optimist among a sea of pessimists XP
I can tell you right now I am not a pessimist. I'm, what I like to call, an optimistic pragmatist. I have hopes for future outcomes, but I don't delude myself to the real world or how things work.

For example, you are correct. Today's far-reaching methods of communication, especially the internet, do provide people with avenues of expressing thoughts and ideas to the world stage unlike anything we had in the past. However, when we opened those flood gates, look at the sea of crap that poured out of the masses. Consider all of the wacky, crazy, disturbing, disgusting, and bat-shit insane things you see online. Then consider how little rational, reasonable, and intelligent topics and discussions you see in comparison.

We may be able to communicate now in ways we couldn't even have dreamed years ago, but that doesn't mean the topics of discussion have gotten any better or the twits speaking the words have gotten any smarter.

I agree, we definately do have the resources to end world hunger ten times over but the people who hold the resources only use it for self-profit

As a wise man once said, if we took the billions America alone spends on their military each year we can end world hunger and explore the universe together in peace forever and ever

I'm pretty optimistic myself but that doesn't mean I should just ignore the reasons my dreams won't come true, you are still preaching to the choir here, we all want to fix the world but those who hold the real amounts of money simply want to make sure they stay rich for security reasons

"business" means "to make money" and it's businessmen who run the world, nothing EVER happens if someone isn't making a profit

This isn't pessimism, it's just reality...
While I do agree with you, I have to point out that one of, if not the, biggest contributor to the worlds hunger issues is over-population and a lack of resources. Not just an imbalance in said resources. And, throwing money at the issue isn't going to fix it, unfortunately. Still, I'm with you on everything else.

It's not pessimistic to say the world is in a bad place right now. It's simply stating the truth. Because, let's face it, it is. Is it worse than years past? Probably not, but that doesn't mean it's in a good state.

Though, I will say that not all of those with extreme wealth do everything for personal gain. Granted, they still hold onto a vast majority of their wealth, but some still give freely of that wealth to help others. These "givers" are few and far between, of course. So much so that at times it's hard to find them.

Hear, hear. I'm reminded of the old adage "Ignorance is bliss". As if you have to be stupid to be happy. I understand a lot of how the world works. I know how bleak things can be. I can still be just as, if not more, happy than someone who doesn't.

You make a good point, but I will remind you that the internet is still in its infancy. The fact that something like SOPA almost happened is evidence of that. People still don't understand its place in society.

You, sir, have made my evening.

OP, what if someone's idea of enjoying life is "wasting time" discussing the meaning of life, existence or whether we have free will? I had a discussion with a friend studying psychology the other week, talking about whether the world exists as we expect it and if anything beyond our line of sight actually exists, and it was the most fun discussion I've had in a while.

I complain, whine about small things, cry about silly things, get upset and can get very depressed. But you know what? I'm HAPPY. I enjoy my life and the things that fill it and I'm so excited about my future. I complain and moan about things because I'm HUMAN. Not some plastic, false and utterly unbelievable person who goes around giving their life savings to charity and doing good things and thinking about how things could have been worse instead of better because they think it'll make them seem like some sort of wonderful, positive person.

I'm not sure if I should be slamming my face into my desk at how bad that looks...or laughing hysterically at how deliciously bad that looks.

I'm so torn. It's like if MLP and Buck Rogers had an elicit love affair, and birthed that show.

Yes. You're right. It's still very early on.

However, I must point out that television and film are anything but in their infancy. And, while we do occasionally get something brilliant, look at the sheer level of muck we have to wade and filter through to find any of it.

I'm just saying, history has shown that when something is "opened to the masses", more often then not it's at that point that that "something" begins it's decline.

God...that makes me sound like SUCH a hipster. I'm not, I swear!

I do have hope that that's not the case.

Oh shut up. Seriously. Shut it. You complaining that everyone is sad is just as bad as complaining that everyone is too happy and blithely oblivious, and is also just as bad as complaining about how awful things are. Different people view the world in different ways, and some of those people view the world as a terrible, terrible place. If you don't like it, let them be miserable in their own way, don't put them down for it.
