they are only as devastating as the player who wastes half of their life learning stupid and ridiculous combos only to find that, not only does button mashing work just as well, but a new game is coming out just as you finished learning these crazy time wasters and that you will need to start all over again.
Well, have you button mashed in Street Fighter against a guy who knows their salt and won consistently? Or are you of the sort that never even plays fighting games yet somehow knows better than those who do?
It's a multiplayer game. Like Team Fortress 2, like COD4, like Street Fighter II and III, people will still be playing it after a new game comes out. Besides, not many games are coming out that are as known as Street Fighter. There's Tekken but that's a different beast entirely. Other than that, games like Blazblue, KOFXII and the like will be vying for a different audience SF4 has.
Not only that,
playing against button mashers is merely a showcase of patience. Playing against someone who just indiscriminately mashes buttons is just a case of waiting until they trip up and then punish it. Nothing more. If you want to see proof, I can show you my 70% win rate (of about a 1000 matches) in SF4. It really isn't that I'm so awesome at the game, it's just that most of the players I've played have been either predictable Ryus, Kens and Sagats or obviously were mashing buttons indiscriminately. You don't need to know flashy combos, just the basics (i.e. basic moves, blocking and how to get supers and ultras in consistently).
Oh, and you don't really do charge moves by mashing buttons. That alone requires some thought to be put into the game.
