Here in Canada, income tax is 50% of our pay and in my province(Ontario) shopping tax is 15%(or maybe 16%,I can't really remember)

Then there's property tax etc.
Sales tax in Ontario is 13%; 8% provincial sales tax (PST) and 5% federal Goods and Services Tax (GST). That's down from 15% thanks to a pretty lame tax cut put in recently by the federal government.

Income tax is graduated in Canada; Wikipedia [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Income_taxes_in_Canada] lists the brackets in detail, but it tops out at 29%. Ontario levies its own additional tax on top, but I have trouble seeing them adding up to 50%.... though, thanks to Employment Insurance premiums and Canada Pension Plan contributions, it might get up there if you're earning more than $125 000 and have a bunch of capital gains to declare.

Yea, I was kinda exaggerating, but still, tax in Canada is much higher than in America.
One of the main reasons for that being the social services Canada provides. Most important to note being free public health care. The sales taxes were lowered by 2% as a move on Harper's part to make a flashy move that didn't really do a lot. What it did was look good to the uneducated thus making the conservatives more appealing which he was hoping would lead to a majority government. He is as of yet unsuccessful.

This is why I hate Randists. No understanding of basic economics, so I wind up explaining it to them, and then they disagree with me and say I'm an idiot, they seem to regard government as this malevolent, cancerous evil and public enterprise as this pure, clean force of holy goodness (hah), and seem to regard the wealthy as hardworking people who 'pulled emselves up by ther awn bootstrings', rather than 'hardworking people who got fucking lucky'.

It depresses my to see how little people seem to connect with the real world.

Yeah I feel you although since I'm self employed I'm hit harder with unreasonable taxes. Personally I think they should look over their own tax forms to see if they make any kind of logic before they put it into action.

I have the government take out as much as they can out of my weekly paycheck. That way I don't owe them anything come April 14th. In fact, I usually get refunds.

I once told a friend that Uncle Sam is like that crazy uncle who comes up to you once a week and says "hey spot me some bucks, 'cause I got this really cool idea". Sometimes he lives up to his promises, and sometimes you wonder what the hell he's doing with your money.
