Both my wife and I work. Neither of us make a lot of money, so we need as much money out of our checks as we can get just to make bill payments. Because we are taking out as much as we can out of our checks (this money that we have earned). We now owe the government money because we dont have enough to go around. YES, you read that right. Because we need our money and we dont make enough, now we owe the government for US not having enough money. Im going to have to take a loan out of the bank just to cover this amount, because of course, I dont have the money.
Do you owe extra because of underestimated "withholdings"? Or something else?

Here in Sweden, the tax is typically deducted from your pay before you see it. That way you don't get attached to money that's not actually yours.

Fair or unfair, that money belongs to the state, because if you don't give it to them they'll give you a fucking beating. I suggest learn to live with it, or declare yourself a sovereign nation.

Oh and PS. Having a good fire department and police and healthcare and free education and roads and not the least a system that allows people who can't fend for themselves to live is worth any price in my opinion. What the hell, it's only money.

More importantly the constitutional ammendment allowing federal income tax at all was never ratified. [http://political-resources.com/taxes/16thamendment/default.htm] There is no actual law requiring anyone to pay federal income tax.

And most people who don't, never get in trouble for it.

Same. In Poland you only pay taxes and if you aren't living in a single-family home, you have to pay the town for energy and gas.

That's how income tax generally works in the US. Most of it is taken out of your paycheck before you get it. But the stuff coming out of your paycheck isn't always exactly what you owe. So once a year you pay off the extra or get a check for what you overpaid. This is when you can claim tax rebates for stuff like student loans or money you gave away to charity or whatever.

I don't know if this is well-known -- it certainly isn't commonly done, -- but you can mess with how much is deducted monthly by changing a number on this worksheet you file when you set up the job. The forms you file at the end of the year list how much total you paid and how much you owe, so you can't actually cheat your way into money this way, but you can pay more up-front to be pretty much guaranteed a refund every April.

Isnt is amusing, the more money you make the more taxes they take. Fine, whatever, If I fell into that category I might care more about it. My problem isnt that I make too much money, its that I dont make enough.

I read the instructions on my tax forms when I filled them out last year. So I did them as I should have. As a consequence, I now have a hefty payment I must pay the government because I dont make enough money. I have to pay the government almost $700. (Im not making this up)

Just a glimpse into our lives here in America for anyone who dosent live here. Both my wife and I work. Neither of us make a lot of money, so we need as much money out of our checks as we can get just to make bill payments. Does anyone think this is just? You have to pay the government because your broke!!! (If anyone from the government reads this and disagrees. Bite Me!)
Here in Canada, income tax is 50% of our pay and in my province(Ontario) shopping tax is 15%(or maybe 16%,I can't really remember)

Then there's property tax etc.
Uhh... 50%? I don't know what part of Canada you're living in pal, but it's 15% for income tax where I live. You should move.

the poll question is a bit confusing,is it to read"Is this right?" as in your given situtation?
or taxes,is it just to collect them in general?
Im not going to argue with the government collecting taxes. But c'mon, if im bad off enough that I NEED all my money, not just to go out and blow it on stupid stuff. Then I shouldnt be penalized like this (or anyone in that respect). I have paid taxes all year, Apparently they dont think ive paid enough. :(

(We even had to skip Christmas all together this last year because we didnt have any money)
Not to be a dick, but you should consider not working at McDonalds anymore.

There is no need for what? Despair? Disgust? Rudeness? If you are not a Randist, then I apologise for the insult. If you are, then I refrain from further comment.

ok then, let's switch to regressive taxes, what an awesome idea.
I was thinking about linear, but why the hell not?
At least it would encourage people to work harder and get richer.
No, it wouldn't. Because once you became poor you'd be trapped into poverty... the impoverished already spend the bulk of their incomes on essentials like food and rent. Taxing them heavily would reduce their ability to set anything aside for education (for themselves or their kids) and make it impossible for them to gain the skills necessary to move up the income ladder.

A regressive tax would lead to a large body of poor with little to no spending power and no way to improve it, a small and desperate middle class afraid to spend for fear of ending up impoverished, and a tiny group of wealthy who can dictate terms of employment and probably spend a lot of time stabbing each other in the back. This, by the way, isn't speculation; it has happened to a lot of societies around the world, Imperial Rome and pre- and early-Victorian England being two notable examples. It killed Rome; the British were luckier.

Change your filing status. You will see a slight decrease in your paychecks, but you won't get hit nearly so hard come tax time. You may even get money back. Every single tax year I've ever worked I've gotten money back; during those years my salary ranged from $16,000 to $50,000+.
