They should have done this a long time ago...It's just tough to do when the game has so many over-the-top animations. Having twice the models would mean every little thing would need to be redone - how they hold each weapon, running, dying, cheering, laughing, etc...

I would have liked to have seen it, or just gender-lock some classes like they already do, just have a couple classes that were female. I don't know. I guess they found it harder to really make a "character" out of them - ie: you don't play "a" scout, you play THE scout, some wisecracking hotshot from Boston; you don't play "a' medic, you play THE medic...and maybe those archetypes just made more sense to the developers as male. I don't know. I think they should have had female characters - it wasn't too hard to do in their other games.

depends. the biggest issue is that each character was disigned with its siluet in mind, and the only way it would work is if the female versions fit those, because throwing in nine more shapes to have to deal with would probably mess it up too much. also, i see the spy as someone who probably wouldn't hurt a woman (physically) knowingly. the gentleman that he is.

also the pyro may or may not be a girl.

EDIT: well most of what i said was ninja'd

and another point the one above me made was good too. your not playing a heavy, your playing the heavy.

Because they didn't design them with females during production and they aren't going to change that any time soon. I'm sure Valve has probably published something on why they didn't have any female characters at some point and you can look it up if you so desire.

This never has bothered me about TF2. Oh sure, some skins would be nice, but realize that I've never thought about adding females to TF2 for as long as I've played it.

I wouldn't mind it, but I also wouldn't care if they didn't add female players. If they're well done, sure, but if it's going to be half-assed then Valve shouldn't even bother.

i have only had TF2 for a brief period 2 months at the most and im a Free to player. but i thought that having Female's would have been a really good idea to have in a game and would have personally been on my list of things to Add to TF2.

if they did add Girls then there are more characters instead of the same people running around with a Top hat and stuff. they wouldn't even need to change any hats. even if you type Girl's in TF2 lots of photos and drawing of it pop up.

So alot of people are after it, but i want the Escapist's opinion here. Do we need girls in TF2?

please Explain your answer
you do know that the pyro is probably a girl, right?

I mean her/his voice is muffled by the mask so it could any gender and you wouldn't know.

Also their is a purse in the lockers in TF2 and all the rest of the classes are obviously men so that leaves only one charecter...i'm not trolling, look for it yourself

Big problem with that is that right now, the classes are pretty distinctive. You recognize a heavy, a medic, a spy, a scout, an engineer, a pyro, a demoman, a sniper, or a soldier INSTANTLY, hat or no hat. Important element of the strategy of the game.

Alright. Let's say you add female characters. Model count doubles, and you need to work twice as hard to recognize one class or another. I've seen some really spiffy models for female TF2 characters, but with 18 different character models on the map I gotta figure it'd feel crowded and start getting difficult to pick people apart from one another.

Valve tests everything TO DEATH (I'm convinced Portal 2 is a playful self-parody on their game development process), so I have to figure they have the models on hand and have tested this themselves and revealed that this suspicion is true. Don't know for sure, can't really speak for them, but if I had to venture a guess as to why there's no Mrs. Heavy, that'd be it.

the acctual reason is because of the character design.

the Sillouette of each of the classes was really a big part of the class design making each class quickly identifable at a passing glance allowing players to quickly make decisions based on the information provided by a mear half second of visual refrence.

even with the implementation of hats, the reletive design and sillouette of each of the classes remain rather strongly pronounced and players can easily tell a Pyro apart from a Heavy or a Medic apart from an Engineer.

Although orginally it was intended to have female avatars, the simple fact was that trying to create feminized versions of the stylized male counterparts in game which still supports the sillouette identification is too daunting a task to do successfully.

as per the example of your picture.
the base sillouette of the Scout, Sniper, and Soldier in the illistration are near the same with only minor changes to the bust size and hair style... the base Sillouettes of both the Engineer and Pyro also share strong similarities making the cpability to tell, at a glance, what class is what difficult.

We already do! The Pyro is obviously the Scout's mother.

But seriously, there's a couple of important game design decisions behind the lack of females in the game. Number one is the time period, I don't think you'll find many female soldiers in the 50's. But the big issue is class recognition.

What I mean by that is that every class has a very distinct silhouette (as does every weapon, but that's a different issue). This silhouette means you can instantly recognise who you're going to be shooting at next and adjust your tactics accordingly. Adding another whole set of models would just clutter and confuse this situation.

If you want more information on this, play the developer commentary, or even email Gabe.

No! Female hit boxes are usually smaller like crossfire where you can specify character. My hit % actually goes down against females.

The problem with this whole question is, it's like you are asking for it to come out of thin air.

given the choice between new maps, guns, hats and items or having them try and fit female models into the game I'll take the former over the latter.

it's already late to implement females into the already epic game of TF2, the game of Men and Gods. but I can Imagine that Team Fortress 3 in all its futuristic and possibly totally imaginable glory may have females, and full customization, who knows.

First of all, I trust Valve, so whatever they have decided to avoid or not done yet is for some reason, even if it is kind of a dumb one.
I would like to see it. But your picture kind of expresses my issue with that... it could be overly sexualized quite a lot. If it isn't, I'd go with that. If it is, well... we'll have cartoon boobs being blown to bits by rocket launchers, I guess. But it would lose that sense of ridicule and just nonsense that TF2 normally has.

I think when it was first coming out they should have had balance, some female and some male, the aweosme thing about TF2 is that you get a really established character along with a really established class, they're all unique right down to personalities... I think having an extra mirror of every class would dilute how pronounced the characters are whether they were female or not is regardless. I hope they take note for TF3 (if there will be such a thing) but even then there lies the problem of adding more classes and its so perfectly balanced as is, do they wanna do that and if not you'd have to take out some characters we know and love and make some of them females and its kind of messy I'll admit...

just asume Pyro is a female, actually you could assume several of them are just very masculine females if you wanted to

this is really kind of silly, I know there aren't many but no one complains when the media we consume is prominantly female; I think this should just be left alone and its jsut how it is.. the females I play TF with don't seem to mind and neither do I. I really doubt that Valve is sexist at any rate
