So I've been playing Diablo 3 since launch and have enjoyed the game for the most part. Anyways, I've got a little bored and would like another game to play until I feel like picking D3 back up. My question is that if you would choose to play a game between Tera and Secret World, which would you pick and why?

Personally, after seeing some videos about both, Tera has seemed to have piqued my interests.

For clarity, I like the amount of customization I have at my disposal in each game which is why it's hard for me to choose. Creativity and the ability to stand out from other players are qualities I enjoy in any online game.

Guild Wars 2 obviously :p

Between the two I would say The Secret World, simply because it's in a different setting, is doing some rather new things (no levels and ARG style quests) and also because, from what I've heard from others, once you get 20ish in TERA it enters the typical Korean Grindfest trap.

TERA is sleazy to the point of being ludicrous, so I can't take it seriously, but I've heard mixed reports on the actual game play. A few people love it and find it dynamic, others hated it and found it bland and familiar.

The Secret World is promising and has a lot of really interesting ideas going on in terms of game design, but has two major issues. The first is that I was in the first beta weekend and the game was a buggy mess. Just flat out broken, on many levels. The second is that it's a triple dipper...box cost, sub fee, and a micro-transaction item shop.

So...TERA. I personally think the game is a ripe embarrassment and I wouldn't be caught dead playing it, but TSW is going to fall on its ass hard when it launches a month from now. It's a disaster waiting to happen. Even if they clean up the bugs in the short, short time they have available to them, their cost-heavy pricing scheme is going to get them murdered by some of the more polished FTP games on the market.

Huh. So Secret World supposedly lets me play any way I want? What if I want to be a closet pedophile with a fetish for furries?

I guess there is Tera for that.

(I kid)

Seriously though, I'm now curious about Secret World. Anyone know what the payment model is going to be?

Double post apologies, Guppy posted as I was typing.

It blows. Putting in the requirement to aim to make it more dynamic doesn't mean much when you then slice the character's tendon whenever they attack, with a couple exceptions.

Thanks for answering my question. Guess I'll actually be steering clear of this one then. I've been disappointed so many times by MMOs I'm starting to lose count. To date I believe there are only two MMOs that didn't disappoint me.

It's sad. In some ways TSW is one of the most ambitious MMOs to come along in years. Moreso even than the much ballyhooed Guild Wars 2. They've just made some really, really, really questionable decisions when it comes to pricing. The day of the subscription MMO is already waning, never mind one that's trying to nail you with micro-transactions right out of the gate. That, and anyone familiar with Funcom's previous launches should be getting cold sweats over the state of TSW. If this thing launches with even half the issues it was showing during open beta, it's going to be one more messy launch, and then GW2 or Pandaria is going to drop on it like a bomb, and a year from now it'll be one of those niche games everyone raves about that can barely hold down 50K subs.

Tera if you can't find porn on the internets, no it has no other redeeming features, sure the world looks interesting but they tell no story that would capitalize on it so 30min in you already feel burned out on the grind.

Secret World on the other hand... has zero redeeming features, all I've seen sofar is low quality and boring, ok maybe it's usable as something to laugh at with it's horrid writing and voice acting.

It looks less bland then other MMOs I've seen and the gameplay is just different enough to make me want to play it over D3s 'click-click-click'

I'll probably wait until it goes F2P like APB did then :/

What other F2P games would rival TSW?

Lol if I wanted 3d p0rn in a game, I'd go play Kabod or Queen's Blade

Pretty much any of the slightly more polished FTP offerings like Aion, or LOTRO, or even Funcom's own AOC. I believe WoW still has a basic introductory FTP model. DC Universe Online is FTP now. COX is FTP. EQ2. There are just too many stable, functional, reasonably well made MMOs out there going to FTP models to make someone wonder WTF they are paying $15 a month for if your game isn't special in some way.

And then, of course, GW2 is out there in the near future, waiting to take it up the rump if it stumbles.

The right thing to do would've been to release it with a heavier micro-transaction model and no sub fee. And possibly a lower box price as well. Get as many people playing it as possible, get some good word of mouth going, and most importantly make it EASY TO RETURN if they drift off during a rocky launch. The psychological barrier of re-upping your sub on a credit card is surprisingly significant.

tera, not only dose it have a very entertaining combat system but it is the only recent game to include the use of 'boobie windows' and the philosophy that the less armor you wear the more protected you are. but seriously if you can get past the fact this is a very eastern style game the combat system redeems it with it getting a level more brilliant around the level 20 mark. (and you can play as a giant hamster with a pipe in it's mouth.)

snip.
WoW - played, hit cap, got sick of PvP grinding. Also, all my friends got bored and quit.
Aion - I heard hackers ruined this game?
LOTRO - Tried it. Didn't like it.

I'm not specifically recommending any of those games to you. I'm just giving you a general idea of the playing field and why TSW releasing in a bug riddled state with a multitude of payment requirements is going to result in it getting reamed.

If I was going to recommend an MMO to you I would be telling you to wait for GW2.

So what happens at level 20? The gameplay alone might make it worth playing for me.

I have a copy of GW:factions somewhere collecting dust. What are some of the biggest changes in GW2?

It's a completely different game. The first Guild Wars 1 is an MMO lite with completely instanced game play. It's closer to Diablo III than a true MMO. Guild Wars 2 is a full fledged MMO. It's borrowing three faction open world PvP from DAoC, complete with keep sieges and objective control. It's ditching the Healer/Tank/DPS trinity for a movement/dodging based damage avoidance system. It's ditched traditional questing for public quests with shared objectives. It's a relative breath of fresh air.

Wow, that actually looks like something I'd want to play. I noticed no NPC quests, the grinding is minimal, and the sidekick feature looks good because I think I have friends that said they were going to play this.

The only downside for me is the open world pvp. I'm the kinda player who hits max level before I play any kind of pvp

No no...the WvWvW PvP takes place in its own area called The Mists, which is completely optional. Every week, your server is matched up against two other servers based on previous performance. Red team, blue team, green team. You then compete over a massive area full of keeps and objectives. Whoever is "winning" imparts global bonuses to their home realm. You can join at any level. While higher level players have an advantage, lower levels are still competitive and can help take smaller objectives.

Here's a map:

That's four huge interconnected zones, full of objectives.

the combat gets more challenging and you can make every kill feel like an achievement.
