From what I've seen of those two aforementioned MMOs all I can say is this (Keep in my I have never played them, I'm just saying my initial thoughts and things I heard about these games, which might or may not be true):

Secret World - The settings looks very interesting and very original. The modern day setting is very relatable and very familiar considering the times we live in, and the mystical and magical elements give you enough of wonder and excitement to keep it interesting. That's all the positives I can say about it. The combat looks dull, it's a hot-key based MMO. I'm sure I'm not the only one that's sick of them.

Tera Online - From what I heard the quests and other activities are very very VERY repetitive and boring, but the combat system is incredibly fun and the probably the only thing that keeps people playing.

Neither of these games seem gripping enough to me to even warrant a second thought, but there's one MMO over the horizon that's right up my alley. Guild Wars 2. World vs World vs Worlds PvP, dynamic events, the discarding of the holy trinity, massive boss battles and other nick nacks make this game intriguing to me.

Congratulations. You've actually made me kinda excited for Guild Wars 2, which is something no one else has been able to do especially considering how snarky I've been about the hype over it. Good show.

I've played one Guild Wars 2 Beta Weekend Event so far, with another coming next weekend, and I have to say the game keeps it very polished and fresh, even though it isn't out of beta yet. There were no huge issues, other than occasional lag, but they've supposedly massively reworked their server hardware to accommodate the influx.

The game itself seems very interesting, and can be played many different ways. I really loved the way the world is designed as well, landscape and cities are designed to feel grand. I didn't see all of them, but the human city, Divinity's Reach, is probably the single greatest city I've seen in any game I've ever played, and that's saying a lot.

Other = Guild Wars 2.

Out of the two of them, I'd say even though I find TERAs art style somewhere between incredibly silly and borderline offensive, and I wouldn't ever want to be seen playing it, I'd still recommend it over TSW. The beta came across like a pre-alpha for a very bad WoW-clone. The combat is buggy as hell, there are clear delays between button presses and on screen actions, the animations are terrible, and there's no weight behind your movements or actions whatsoever. But even worse, the combat isn't even interesting. There's no innovation at all. Even if they somehow managed to iron out the bugs and improve the performance, whether at release or months/years down the line (likely years knowing Funcom), it'd still be a really boring game. Don't get me wrong the game has some cool ideas. But everything good about the game is pure concept. It's a modern day MMO; fucking sweet. That's three words in the brief of a design document. Everything about the implementation is bad.

Even if either of these games were any good, I wouldn't pay a subscription for them. I've been down that road before with way too many titles. It just means you have to spend every free moment playing it in order to feel like you're not wasting your money. Play a F2P or B2P and play it at your leisure.

Well after seeing initial impressions of both games I've got to say that you really shouldn't go with either. :3

The Secret World
I think in terms of setting, this game does seem to be taking an interesting turn with the whole modern day setting thing it has going on. One could argue that the use of "real" factions like the Illuminati make for an interesting context to the actions within the game itself. So, I think in terms of setting and possibly story (although the voice acting mostly bad in my own personal opinion :p) the Secret World does seem to be striving for something new. The "leveling" system seems to be something quite new as well. It seeems, key word seems, to be designed around truly letting a player choose what they want to specialize in while still offering a guiding hand to those who want it. Also the complete abolishing of actual numerical levels is an interesting move. (Not entirely sure on this, I just casually heard it.) However, the area where I feel this game falls flat is in the actual gameplay, combat.

I'm going to make a break for easier reading. :D

The combat looks like standard hotkey MMO similar to the oh so famous World of Warcraft. There isn't any aiming to be done, and from what I've seen there isn't an dodging to be done either. It's the simple click on the thing to target then mash all your abilities at it until either you or it falls over dead. Also, from the footage I've seen the weapons just look and feel terrible, as if there's no weight behind them. The combat just doesn't seem like it feels good or fun at all. Maybe on actual release they'll have fixed the issue of melee weapons looking like they do absolutely nothing, but I doubt this would be enough to make the combat feel good.

TERA
Hehe, I guess this game has pretty much the polar opposite problem as The Secret World. I'm sure you've seen the combat in which everything seems to be in real time. The big thing being something like you have to actually actively aim your attacks etc. I'll be honest here and say I haven't really done my research in forming this opinion, but here it is anyway so take it or leave it. :D

While the combat system seems all good trying to be new and innovative in the MMO world, they suffer from a frightening lack of innovation in terms of quests and storyline. The setting appears to be nothing more than the standard fantasy world that already saturates the MMO market, and from what I've seen the quests are all basically the absolutely boring MMO standard of "Kill X amount of Y for idiot Z." The combat may be more fun(I wouldn't know since I haven't played it), but at the end of the day you'll be forced to repeat the same actions a massive number of times without any context or motivation for doing so other than to get to the next level. Personally I don't see the appeal to these types of games anymore.

And so the conclusion is buy Guild Wars 2 instead. :D It's not subscription based so you'll only be paying the one-time entry fee rather than eventually getting a ridiculous bill simply because you enjoyed a game for a length of time. :p

Or don't get Guild Wars 2. It's your time and money my friend, you're free to choose how you spend it. :D

P.S Just because I'm absolutely loving it at the moment, if you really do want to play Tera because of its more action oriented/real time combat system, just get Dragon's Dogma (if you have a console I suppose xP).

They're both good games but as a fantasy geek (I.E. Biased opinion incoming) I would say TERA is the better of the two.

That said, neither is worth paying a subscription fee for and they'll both be F2P before long.

EDIT: Others have mentioned this and I'll throw my lot in with them, GW2 is absolutely amazing, worth the asking price without a doubt.

For those who haven't played Tera. The real time combat is... spamming left mouse button. That got me through everything I fought in the game. There is a dodge button but I didn't see a need to use it. It reminded me quite a bit of DC Universe. Well DC Universe with a bit of Pedobear thrown in.

To answer the question; Secret World all the way. I'm hoping this time around that Funcom learned from what they did wrong in Age of Conan.

Yeah, I talked to one of my friends and him and his wife are both going to play GW2 so I guess I might as well too. Also, I haven't heard much of Dragons Dogma...is it like a console MMO?

Dragons Dogma is an open world console RPG. No online aspect sadly.

Based on my brief experience with the beta client, that hope is ill placed. This has all the hallmarks of a classic Funcom release day disaster. It needs SO much work still.

Oh no no no no. xD Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that it is an MMO. It's just a recently released single-player RPG whose main strength is the fantastic real-time action-oriented combat. It's why I said that if it's just the real-time combat in an RPG that you're interested in, Dragon's Dogma would be really good. xD

Ah, sorry it's a Friday and my mind is elsewhere. I just watched a gameplay video of DD and it looks like a better(?) version of Skyrim.
