Minecraft i got bored of after a few weeks however i still enjoy playing with redstone. Terraria is very fun at the moment but there is no way its charm will last as long as minecrafts. its a game thats half based on building with nothing to build i guess. Still this genre is my favorite so far.

I like terraria more because there's more monster variety, also with the bosses and undergound jungle etc. it stays challenging for longer. I also like the larger variety of items like grappling hooks and rocket boots, I still love minecraft though.

Also, might i remind you all that minecrafts at this stage is supposed to be a survival game, and it completely fails in doing that. I just think that minecraft would be so much better if notch would have waited to sell it.
Go play a new world on minecraft on hard mode and then come back and tell me that you can easily survive ;)

For a skilled player, surviving isn't hard if you hide out during the night and do what you need to do during the day and such, but for a new player, or an unskilled player, the experience is completely different.

While I can easily jump on the bandwagon of saying it's dumb to compare the two (and really, it is), I find it more fascinating in what direction both of these games have taken to garner so much attention. I've only played a tiny bit of Minecraft, and a lot more of Tarraria, but it still amazes me that in an time of crazy graphics, realism and other details, blocky 3D or sprite 2d have a special little place in our hearts.

And here's the thing, both have their charm, and both have their appeal, but both also grab onto the same formula that keeps us engaged: The ability to -make stuff-.

As for me personally, I didn't care for Minecraft only because I know it's 'limited by your imagination', but if I wanted to spend more time just building stuff, I'd play something else like SecondLife or some other more detailed rendering system. Tarraria feels more like a 'game' though with the inclusion of NPC's, Bosses and and other such objectives. Either way, I'm curious though to see what direction this continues to go, what kind of trend this can possibly set, especially that games like these show that gamers want more then just "Ooo, it looks pretty."

*sigh* These kinds of polls aren't helping. They're two different games with some (admittedly large) similar mechanics. Because they're both sandbox games, in the best sense. I'm going to quote a recent interview with Redigit (main dev behind Terraria), responding to a question about Terraria's relationship to Minecraft:

"People need to understand that Minecraft isn?t a game anymore, it?s a genre. There are so many possibilities with the gameplay mechanics in question that they shouldn?t be limited to a single title. I think a lot of us are waiting for the big names in the industry to pick up on these concepts and start incorporating them in to the new major titles."
(from here - http://steamaddicts.com/2011/05/terraria-mania/ )

He's got it exactly right. Minecraft opened up a genre, and proved to everybody that a REAL sandbox game, where everything is interactable, can sell regardless of whether or not it has a definite setting, narrative or even characters. It proved that gameplay is what makes it interesting (also, lol @ the "graphics are ugly" commenters everywhere).

They're both excellent games, both have already eaten up dozens of hours of my time (and will continue to do so, as they update in the future). Being drawn to combat over building myself, I would pick Terraria as it is now over Minecraft as it is now - however, down the road, who's to say? If Mojang is able to refocus its efforts on adding in new enemies and perhaps bosses, I may change my mind. For what it's worth, I hope they do.

I've only played Terraria, someone gifted me it, and I'm really enjoying it. The 2D environment and music is really nostalgic to me as an eighties kids and it reminds me so much of Yoshi's Island for some reason. I imagine Minecraft is as good though I haven't tried it yet.

Terraria is simply what Minecraft should have been. When I bought Minecraft it was during an early build where Notch still had his original ambitions of developing the game beyond just a sandbox builder. It was supposed to become a big RPGish adventure game with unique landscapes and special monsters to fight. That never happened. Terraria does this and more in simply it's release build
Bull, Notch is still working on "Adventure mode"

I've spent a lot of time playing Minecraft and Terraria and I enjoyed Terraria more, but I will say that Terraria does have more of a shelf life. There is less room for creativity, tho more action and adventure, and that's what really sold me on it. I love exploring getting better weapons, armor and better accessories in Terraria, and the additon of lots of monsters and magical trinkets means you can a lot more fun exploring randomly and doing stuff on a whim. Mine craft has a lot more creative freedom tho, it's just that after a while the creative freedom lacks weight to it, and that sort of kills it for me personally. Terraria is a lot of fun if you love exploring, fighting monsters, and basically being Indiana Jones. Minecraft however is more of a canvis for you to make your own art, making it a completely different experience when you get down to it. I have both, and I don't regret getting either one, I just feel like I enjoyed Terraria a lot more than Minecraft.

"Adventure Mode" was supposed to be some kind of secondary mode without building. I'm talking about an actual "survival mode". In the current version of the game, you build a dirt hut and nothing can hurt you. You can build a huge castle, but really its no more useful than any other structure, it just looks nice. I like how Terraria gives us something to work for, ya know?

Hate to break it to you Terraria but simply taking an existing game and removing a dimension isn't actually innovation.

Explain how Terraria directly copy pasted Minecrafts features, just in 2D.
Explain.

We may as well have a Fallout 3 vs. Borderlands thread. They may look similar, but they're freaking different games. Terraria is an RPG-style open world game. Minecraft is a sandbox building game with a focus on Survival.

Going with Minecraft for now, anyway.

Well, I basically WON Terreria by creating an amusing NPC, so guess where my vote swings.

Haven't played terraria and I do own minecraft. Judging by what I have seen of both I feel comfortable in picking minecraft as my preferred game. Terraria looks interesting for all the weapons and such but damn I like the 3d of minecraft for the building, makes it much more intersting I would think.
I got terraria late last night and thought it ws pretty much the same as minecraft, till I looked at the wiki. I can have handguns, (a rip off of a) lightsabre, a few spells, nades, harpoon, grapling hook, morning stars and a bunch more stuff. I was quite blown away by the stuff I could get.

As far as I am concered, you can have your 3D, I will have my cool stuff.

I am having problems with it, like finding gold ore or special items. I did have a boss spawn when I never did the thing to spawn it, so I did get owned pretty hard.

I like them both, for similar as they are, they succeed in different ways. Minecraft is much better for building impressive structures, but Terraria has a much broader range of content better combat. Yeah, I'll take both, please.

As for your other question, I can't say for sure that this will usher in an entirely new genre that will leave its mark on the industry forever, but I'll bet you an oreo that there will be many more similar games, yet. In fact, I'd say there's a pretty good chance of a big-name studio with the funding of a publisher taking a crack at it. I hope they do; I'd love to see what they would do with a couple millions in funding AND and opportunity to learn from the strengths and shortcomings of two successful games like it.

Minecraft. It's 3D and you can build amazing sky scrapers and tones of other things. The combat in Terraria is MUCH better though. However 2D games only hold my interest for so long. I'm not saying they are bad (I've enjoyed many 2D games like Terraria, Shadow Complex and Limbo) but I know that I am starting to feel bored with Terraria.
I don't think I'll ever get bored of Minecraft.

That's what I love about Minecraft. There is no real goal. You just do what you want. I can see how that could turn some people off of it though.

I like Terraria a lot more because it has a MUCH bigger emphasis on Adventure instead of being a building simulator. Minecraft got old because I don't like making things to look at I like fighting things to fight bigger things.

Oh I agree. The freedom to do whatever is nice, and i would never want a definitive end to the game. What I do want is simply more to do. More enemies to defeat, more treasure to find, more environments to explore, etc. After how many hundreds of hours I poured into Minecraft I've finally started to see how little it's changed since I picked it up in the early Alpha stage. That bugs me. Sure it works better now, and alot has been added, but nowhere near as much as was promised originally. The scope and direction of the game's development has changed, and not for the better if you ask me.
