Like so many have said they are totally different games. I will say though that I spent the better part of a today lanning with a friend in a new world in Terraria and it was a blast. Honestly some of the most engaging mutliplayer I've played it some time. We plan to do it often. It's bound to get old eventually and that's ok too because I paid 9.99 for this game.

It's a steal.

minecraft and terria hmm i don't really see the connection
minecraft is a creation toy with a survival adventours mechanic set in a 3D world.
whle terria is a more adventous survival with a creation mechanc set in a completely 2D world.
both are good at what they do and present nothing i have seen before but no i don't think they are the heralds of things to come and if they are it will be terria vs minecraft vs rip offs or terria and minecraft vs rip-offs If you do not know what i am talking about look at WoW and the MMO market

Them.

They're entirely different, and I don't see why people need to "choose." It's stupid.
Look at both games for a minute. You begin in a randomly generated world with a day/ night cycle, meaning that you should build a dwelling with gathered materials before night sets in and aggressive monsters kill you. You later aim to build more ambitious projects with rarer mined resources. You get my point, the two are almost identical concepts. I do not hate Terraria, because it at least put a new spin on these ideas with more crafting options, RPG style design, and the perspective shift. Terraria is definitely inspired by Minecraft, but I would not personally call it better or worse.

Neither. Terraria looks mighty uninteresting to me as it is, and I picked up Minecraft right before it went into beta and it hasn't been able to hold my attention at all.

Isn't this kind of like taking a poll for Doom vs Super Metroid? Completely different types of games with some overlapping concepts.
Yeah, pretty much. Or Prototype VS inFamous. Yes, I'm still sore about that one. The games were nothing alike beyond the general "main character has powers and needs to find answers about what's going on" plot summary, yet everyone and their mom compared them. Augh.

[small]Doom is infinitely better than Super Metroid though! :p[/small]

I see your point, but that's one way to play the game.
Some may build more ambitious projects as they move on, but I don't. I like the exploring-aspect of Terraria, where I can travel through dark caves, fighting new monsters as I go on.
I know very well that Terraria is, in some ways, like Minecraft, and it's definitely inspired by that; but not only that.

I've got Minecraft and I love it. I've seen videos for Terraria and nothing makes me want to get it.
So for me Minecraft, I also doubt any big budget devs are going to bother with a game like Minecraft.
Why should Activision waste money developing a brand new game when they can just pump out another CoD that millions will buy regardless of actual quality.

They're completely different games, minecraft focuses mostly on building things, while terraria is about exloration and combat. Although they do cross over in some areas, they are completely different games.

And as for the rip-off comments, minecraft is nothing new, these kinds of games have been around for ages with games like infiminer, dungeon keeper and miner: dig deep.

I think they're both fucking awesome, but for different reasons. I get my sandbox adventure/rpg game on in Terraria and I get my sandbox build/mine/explore on in Minecraft, both to their respective strengths.

terraria (and not just because i hate minecraft fanboys). why? because its a game, not a toy. besides, there is a lot more to do in terraria than minecraft.

then again, both are awesome.

Neither. Miner: Dig Deep, bitches. Pre-dates Minecraft by a month and Terraria by over two years. You can have your "rip-off" games.

Also, might i remind you all that minecrafts at this stage is supposed to be a survival game, and it completely fails in doing that. I just think that minecraft would be so much better if notch would have waited to sell it.
Go play a new world on minecraft on hard mode and then come back and tell me that you can easily survive ;)

For a skilled player, surviving isn't hard if you hide out during the night and do what you need to do during the day and such, but for a new player, or an unskilled player, the experience is completely different.
Actually, when I first played minecraft I played it in normal, and I think that hard has to be WAY way harder than normal for it to be difficult. I found that the most difficult thing about starting in minecraft was reading the wiki page.

Terreria. It just has more variety to it.

Once you've seen a tree-covered hill and been in a cave, you've basically seen the most Minecraft has to offer.

Randomly hurled insults? All games are made by swine!
Um, sorry, couldn't resist.

OT: I'm gonna say mostly the same thing everyone is saying. They share an inspiration, but the way they go about it is completely different. Minecraft has the lead, and I do foresee some clones in its future, but they won't stand up. As for Terraria, I only know what I've heard, but it's not the same as Minecraft, and that's good. The two games might actual help to get sales for each other by being superficially similar. Who knows, other than the fact that they're both good games that deserve to be played. That's what I think of these games.

I´m an avid Minecraft player but Terraria is just so awesome, it gives me this old Zelda feeling and in the end, I can´t really decide, it´s a draw.

terraria was in development before minecraft
Nope, it was developed and released all in 2011.

I think Terraria is better, because you don't require imagination to have fun with it, as you can guess I am not very imaginative.

Minecraft is a building game with adventure.
Terraria is an adventure game with building.

Yeah how can you compare those 2 games, Minecraft is java based while terraia is somekind other thingy. Played both and they both have their plusses and minuses. And BTW news flash for ignorant and other people that haven't realized it yet that we all like diffrent things there is no reason to fight over that what you like and the other dosent. it like imature. yeah Minecraft dosen't have the dynamic light system that terraria has nor the items or so many mobs. But thats why minecraft has mods and is mod friendly.

I own and enjoy both games, but I prefer playing Minecraft, as the only goals are those set by the player. In Terraria, when the bosses are dead, there's nothing left to do. Also, Minecraft has greater modding abilities.
The two games can't really be compared to each other though, as they are two completely different games, that belong in different genres.

Minecraft. Aside from Terraria being a rip-off, their so much less that's possible. Taking a dimension away makes building a lot less interesting. Plus, Minecraft has a certain charm with its art and music and everything.
