Terraria, I don't consider it a rip off since it took a mechanic and built on it, unlike games like FortressCraft. Basically what sells it for me is the better combat, exploration, and loot. I liked both games but Terraria held my interest for longer.

Is this really up for debate?Terraria is by all means a complete rip-off of Minecraft, except it's 2D,so basically it's even a downgrade.
because minecraft has monsters that burrow, monsters that fly, biomes that affect monster spawn, unlimited durability armor and armor set perks not to mention guns, lasers, and bosses

just like terraria has dungeons, exploding monsters, an unlimited and randomly generated world and countless mods

are you a retard? no offense but come on now terraria is like orange juice with vodka and minecraft is vodka with orange juice, just because they are composed of similar ingredients doesnt mean the end product is the same(see: dumplings and bread, egg salad and eggs benedict, steak and burgers, etc.)

oh and terraria being 2d isnt a downgrade because good 2d > bad 3d, unless you want to argue that the n64 and ps1 have better graphics than terraria too
Terrarria is just a rip-off of Minecraft.Admit it.I don't care if you think it's good, but admit it.First, there was Infiniminer,a game about mining precious stuff but then everybody decided it was more fun to build than to mine. Then Notch was like "OK,I could make a game out of this except with crafting and survival and shit",and Minecraft was born. Some time later some other guy was like "oh,lets make minecraft, except were not that good at programming,so lets make it 2D,yeah,i bet everyone is gonna think its really artsy and stuff".
I know Notch sorta likes Terrarria(and he wouldnt just go around saying its shit because thats not his 'style),but then again he still loves Bethesda right after they sued him.Could be lawyers just being lawyers, but Todd Howard had a conversation with Notch about Minecraft and Skyrim etc. and the lawsuit makes no sense.
your either completely retarded or a convincing troll

how you manage to completely ignore that minecraft is shallow in non-building aspects and terraria is shallow in building aspects is beyond me

how can something that you spend 90% of your time fighting and exploring for treasure be a clone of something you spend 90% of your time building 9% of your time trolling forums and being whiny and entitled and the other 1% doing everything else
Minecraft isn't shallow in non-building aspects.Notch first intended building to be just a side thing and the survival, crafting, exploring aspects to be the main focus for the player. But yeah, people like to build their own stuff, that's why it's the first thing that people think about when they hear the word "Minecraft".How you again failed to admit that Terraria is a complete rip-off of Minecraft is beyond me.Look,Saints Row fans admit that it's a complete rip-off of the GTA series, although they still like it.

Who trolls the forums now, huh? When I said that Terraria was a rip-off I knew some Terraria little fan would quote me and ***** and moan about how it's all different and then call me ignorant or a troll or whatever. It was you.Get over it,it's a rip-off.

-Random generated New Zealand-ish world
-Exploring,gathering resources,then crafting them
-Building stuff
-Fighting monsters

What does Minecraft have that Terraria DOESN'T?Things that Terraria couldn't do,because it's 2D.
What does Terraria have that Minecraft DOESN'T?Nothing. It's a copy-cat.

I have to say Terraria, because I am totally addicted to it right now, and I never really felt compelled to even pick up Minecraft. I guess I like the RPG-ish feel of it.

Terraria all the way...I can't get into the aesthetics of Minecraft, it is just plain ugly. Terraria has some retro-charm, while Minecraft is eye-cancer inducing...

Oh here we go again...

Ok:
Minecraft is a creativity game with adventure aspects
Terraria is a adventure game with creativity aspects

The question is simply which ever floats your boat. For me, it's Minecraft.

Apples versus Oranges

They're both sweet fruits (or, in the case of the games, about crafting and building), but otherwise, they aren't comparable.

I'll take Minecraft, I guess, because I've payed for Minecraft but not Terraria.

I don't think Terraria is a rip-off, I just think that Minecraft popularised block-based games. Minecraft certainly wasn't the first to use the idea.

I don't really like Terraria because I think it's too fiddly to play. The blocks are too small and it uses 2d timing-based combat which I've never liked.

I prefer terraria. Their's just more to do, with crafting different weapons and items where in minecraft there's only one weapon, one set of armor, and three (four?) tools; yes there's different armors and swords, but they all work the same, just with different degrade resistance, Notch didn't even bother to make the appearance more than pallette swaps. The enemies in Terraria are much more fun to fight. Minecraft enemies kill you more easily and aren't even fun to fight (Notch himself admitted that combat in his game is very dull and frustrating right now, damn creepers always spawning right behind me underground.) Last is stability where right now Minecraft crashes on me every few minutes or so. Terraria has yet to crash. I also don't like minecrafts plans to make torches useless, and forcing the player to go to the incredibly dangerous hell in order to get the materials that can make light sources than won't leave you hopelessly lost in the dark underground when they go out. I also never build much more than a house anyway, so building isn't really important to me. I don't have the patience or the creativity to make anything very large or intricate. It was bad enough finding the clay to make a brick house, that stuff is way too rare. I also would appreciate a craftable lava proof suit since it's so easy to dig into lava while digging down and die (happened to me five times, lost five diamond picks, don't carry them anymore.)

Hey guys I heard about this new game coming out called Battlefield 3, its such a complete rip-off of Call of Duty, I mean they shoot people AND use all the same guns! Such an obvious rip-off...

Anyway to be completely serious, just listen to what most of the people said if you like upgrading your character collecting loot and exploring go Terraria, if you're a really creative person and like sandbox games go . Also is you have a few friends that would play these games with you I'd go Minecraft, Terraria is fine with 1 - 2 people but anymore then that and it removes all challenge from the game.

How are these sorts of Vs Topics not troll topics?

People immediately started slinging the word "ripoff" around blindly; comparing the two games when their objectives and styles are VERY VERY different from each other. Given the direction it went, this topic was a clear attempt to stir shit up rather than discuss things.

Besides, if you want to go further into the roots of these games, look at Miner: Dig Deep, or Dwarf Fortress even.

Regardless, Terraria is a very good game, and easily my current pick for Game of the Year (which isn't saying much; there are only a tiny handful of games that are even worth it at all on this year's list).

well, minecraft is actually 3d, and as it is 1st person, you cant see dangers ahead of you, so in that sense is more exciting and fun. But, terraria has monsters that are a lot harder to fight.

Ok first off terraria is crap, some people say that minecraft sucks because you can't see below you, like in terraria. Well I ask you terraria fanboys can you see underground, no you freaking dumba's. Also you say that minecraft sucks because it doesn't have enough monsters or enough weapons, well your stupid, if we had 50 billion mobs running around blowing up are houses and killing you everytime you walked outside your house then it would more boring then watching bob the builder with your son or little siblings. Notch made mc first so terraria suck it!!!! And go make a game with a freaking plumber instead. I do believe in about a year, you'll say let's play terraria to someone and they'll be like what the he$; is that crap. The. Someone will say let's play some minecraft and we will all party it up building all day and all night!!!! So LONG LIVE NOTCH and LONG LIVE

Terraria ain't no ripoff. It is its own game. If you look on youtube, search up terraria, people aren't building a bunch of shit, they are killing every fucking thing in sight, getting the best weapons and armor, just like WoW, Runescape, all that good RPG shit. And learn to live with there is no better game.

Minecraft. Aside from Terraria being a rip-off, their so much less that's possible. Taking a dimension away makes building a lot less interesting. Plus, Minecraft has a certain charm with its art and music and everything.
Really? Baring the fact minecraft isn't a game, it's a building sim. There are no objectives in the game, you can set your own goals but there is no beating minecraft ... just like the sims has no finish either, minecraft is like any plane sim. You build and kill the odd enemy in defense or animal to use something it drops.

The rest of it is moving one block from one place to another or changing one it into something to move one block to another. Stone + stick = pick axe = move stone = build house.

Terraria is a game where building is the first 10 minutes (if that) and the rest is building up equipment to fight bosses. Terraria can be beaten by killing the wall of flesh, then it is nothing more than find the goodies.

Which is better, apple or orange?

Um... That post was from May. This thread just keeps getting necroposts from new users.

But since I'm here, yeah, Minecraft is for the creativity/building, Terraria is for the gameplay.
