I am a park ranger, as the folks here who know me know. But it wasn't how I started out my adult life. I originally went to university to study engineering. While there one of my lecturers was a certain professor who had, or so I thought at the time, bizarre views for an engineer. One of his little ranting topics was the car. He said that if we didn't have cars today, just cycles, busses, trains etc, and someone invented the personal automobile, far from striking it rich they would be derided and told the whole thing was terrible.

Think about it. Imagine a world without the car, and then we explain the idea to a bunch of investors.... You take a 2 ton piece of steel, hurl it around roads at 30 miles per hour, guarantee it will kill dozens of people on a daily basis, and say it will swallow up massive resources and cause huge amounts of pollution. Then explain that everyone will have one, and most people will spend half their lives trying to find somewhere to put the damn thing. Then explain that we will tear up large areas of our cities and towns to provide places to park these devices.

The thing is though we have become heavily reliant on it. Not only that but they have also become embedded in modern culture. A lot of people today think of their car as some kind of status symbol, probably like a knight of yore would think of his armour and so have the codpiece area beaten out. It is also essential in the modern world of crappy government which can't run a decent public transport system (ohh that would be socialist wouldn't it!)

I like the idea of the car, I like the notion that vehicles exist to allow people to get from A-B when they need too and they don't need to rely on Mr Bus and Mr Train. But I don't like the fact that our streets have become rivers of steel, belching lead, sulphur, and carbon monoxide into the air. What do you all think of the bugger?

Too much money, too much of a bother, and does wonders at lowering my mortality rate.

I prefer my friend's cars and the bus.

Cars are great! It's much more difficult to run people over while riding a little bicycle!

I study engineering too, and my lecturers are similar! It wouldn't be allowed under health and safety, as essentially you are controlling an explosion - a moving explosion at that!
The combustion engine is one of the greatest inventions we as a species have ever come up with, an outdated one now mind but it really revolutionized so many peoples lives that it can't not be considered as one.

Can't wait for the new H-cell cars! They may be the next big thing - much better than bioethanol (you need a LOT of land to grow sugar for cars after all!)

Since I started using public transport and walking / cycling more. I feel more "meh" towards them.

Cars are mint. If I decide to go to the beach tomorrow Ill get in my car and drive there with minimum fuss or cost and leave when I feel like it.

The thought of dragging my 10 month old with all of the required supplies on and off of a cramped bus is terrible, as is dragging my shopping home from the supermarket. Ive started doing that online, but they still arrive via combustion engine.

I have also commuted to work in previous jobs that would not have been an option if I didnt drive.

If people want to walk instead I wont judge you. Id stay away from puddles in the road though, Im not above giving you a good soaking.

Thats my take, Mister-ranger-sir...

Well, I've got two SUVs, a pickup, and a C2 Commercial hauler. They all see heavy use, as I'm in the construction industry.

For personal transport I can do without them all, but I primarily use them for hauling raw materials, construction supplies and tools.

A man-powered vehicle simply wouldn't be able to efficiently move the amount of things that I need moved. Same principle applies to roadtrains (semis) and lesser box-trucks (moving vans and such) on a much larger scale.

I do agree that they're putting out a terrible amount of harmful emissions, though.

I ride my bike practically everywhere. Much cheaper, less fatal.
Do you ride on the road or on the pavement? In the UK it's illegal to ride a push bike on the pavement and if you regularly ride on the road? Well good luck with that.

I think you'll find the cyclist is at much more danger than the driver.

Interesting premise, but one I don't think could have ever occurred in reality. The automobile did not just appear out of nowhere. It evolved from pre-existing transportation. The word "car" is short for "horseless carriage." The horse and cart had been around for hundreds of years, perhaps thousands, before the automobile was invented, so much of the problems that exist with the automobile, to some extent, had already existed. So a world with no personal transportation save the bicycle and all else handled by mass transportation is pure and utter fantasy. So I really don't know what to say to all of this.

Well, isn't car technically the same technology as the bus?
Yep. It does not necessarily follow that the invention of the engine would lead to the car, history might have been very different if the first combustion engines been designed to replace the tram rather than the horse and cart.

While I don't think we could now do without the ambulance, the police car, and (in a pinch) the taxi service, I also don't believe that everyone needs a car, and certainly nobody needs two or three.

I think the car is a useful asset to society. I personally require a car because the nearest town is over 20 miles away and it would take too long to go to the store if I didn't have one.

Depends where you live. American Public transport isn't that good, although I hear Japan's is amazingly reliable and tightened.

Having lived in Alaska where the nearest major towns can be up to 6 hours away, Id say a car (or truck rather) is fairly handy.

You know most rich & famous people would want their own private bus aka 26 foot long car. And your professor is dumb as s**t.

I don't care about cars, honestly. I can do without them, but I'm not entirely sure I like the idea of living in a world devoid of them.
