Charmander because...
A) He's a fire type. YOU MUST ALWAYS USE FIRE TYPE!
B) He turns into Charizard who is a dragon. A FRIGGEN DRAGON!
There's my nerdy advice for the evening (or the day, depending on which time zone).

Charmander, who becomes Charizard. Who honestly wouldn't want a fire breathing dragon?
cause he sucked against onyx and starmie and about 80 percent of the gyms. though charizard is cool
You can also use Butterfree for the first gym (Confusion rapes the weak special stats on Geodude and Onyx), and Bellsprout/Oddish for the second gym. Vine Whip and Absorb, respectively, are very very powerful against the water types in Misty's gym.

Charizard is the coolest and probably the most useful overall, even if Arcanine is statistically a better fire type. Venusaur has the best stats, but doesn't really learn any great moves in R/B/Y. Blastoise is outclassed in every single way by Cloyster, and to a lesser extent Slowbro and Starmie.

Charmander, in fact for me, it's fire Pokemon everytime.

Go, my children! Burn them all to cinders!

*starts toying with the zippo again*

Edit: Oh, and in regards to dealing with the first couple Gyms, I just either wait 'til he evolves into Charmeleon and learns a melee attack. Or I catch more Pokemon. Either one turns me into an unstoppable bulldozer of pure destruction.

I personally came late to the party that was Pokemon. I only experienced Silver and must say that the Totodile was a very good starter...

I tried the burning rat on a second play through and got stuck at the rock Gym...

Fond memories.

Friggin' Squirtle!

I've always noticed that fire types are much too weak to water attacks, and even though water types are weak to plant attacks, they're not *that* weak. My first time through, I chose Squirtle and beat my rival in the first fight. I was never able to beat the rival in the first fight using Charmander or Bulbasaur.

Needless to say, I had a lot of cousins who also played Pokemon, so all I needed to do was to use the link cable, and then I would be able to start off with all three starting Pokemon. And a Pikachu. And a Mew. After that, I did the multiplication glitch with Missingno to get infinite rare candies and boost everyone to level 99.

Charmander. And the fire starter in every Pokemon game. Because the first gym always has a rock-type gym leader. Hardcore

I have a habit of picking out my favorite for each generation and sticking with it. I go...

Bulbasaur, Totodile, Mudkip, Turtwig.

It's all eccentric preference, really.

I'd have to go with bulbasaur, though last time I played I just ditched the beginning one and blasted through the game with only a Ratatat, who I didn't let evolve into Raticate.

In Red/Blue I picked Squirtle because he just looked like the coolest one in my opinion.
In FireRed/LeafGreen Charmander Because he learned metal claw sooo early (lvl 13)

Charmander, because he's awesome and the game is harder in the earlier going with him, forcing you to actually play the way you're supposed to (building a balanced team, as opposed to crushing everyone beneath your Bulbasaur's mighty tread.)

Bulbasaur is technically the "best," however, because he owns 4 or 5 of the gyms by himself. Certainly the first 3.

I always like whichever starters make the game the hardest. So it goes, Charmander, Chikorita and Torchic for me.
