Its a f-ing box.

You are asking us whether we liked a box or not.
And 76% of the people answering said Yes...so what's so weird about the question?

I understand valve tried to make a inanimate object seem human etc. and almost force you to attach to it and the joke being this cube is some being that everyone loves for no real reason. I just don't understand those that actually did, and why it keeps coming up.

There's a thread going on right now called "favourite companion" and some people are putting the cube; if it's a joke isn't it a little old by now?

Not really, its an object that helps you beat the game by doing nothing but making you care for it.

The companion cube has yet to be surpassed in that respect.

Unlike other "computer friends" on games, the Companion cube never gets stuck in walls, it never cast's flare in your eyes, it does nothing to impede your progress. So the joke isn't old, it will get old when something else can surpass it.

Its why its so good, it does nothing therefor it does nothing wrong, if you fuck up its all your own fault.

That's quite a good take on it, I suppose in a world where even the best AI will run in front of your shots or prevent you from taking cover something which purely helps should be appreciated, although I'm not entirely sure how it differs from the other cubes in the game except you have to carry this one through the level

That's pretty funny.
I like companion cube, although it did try to stab me.

It protected you from the evil power balls. And you never really let go of it afterword. until you had too.

Also nice buy on the Orange Box

This cube is different because you take it with you, you can't complete the level without taking it with you, it will deflect laser death balls and all sorts through out the level, and whenever you drop it you need to figure a way to take it further with. If you leave it behind your essentially leaving yourself behind because its needed.

The other cubes you can put them on a switch and forget about them because they just opened a door for you, thats the difference between the weighted Companion Cube and the Wiegthed Storage cube. You can forget about the normal cubes and carry on the game, the companion cube must not be forgotten.

My feelings can be described as what NTom64 said to greatzombieron during the Portal playthrough when they got the companion cube. YAY THE COMPANION CUBE! [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u87ZkusXidU&feature=PlayList&p=B1A61331FBB01DB0&index=4]
That video gets on my nerves, purely because they never put the weighted companion cube the "right" way up, the heart is on its side!. Its wrong I tell you.

Note; I'm not trolling merely curious.

Recently I got the orange box for the 360, the first thing I did was play Portal due to the enormous amount of positive reviews it got from pretty much everyone. I got to the level with the companion cube and I am just curious as to what the big deal about it is. I may have missed something but I didn't pause for a second when I had to incinerate the thing, I did find that "secret" area where there are pictures of the cube in an affectionate light but it stirred no feelings from me.

So do you (the escapist population) generally like this cube and have I missed something? Couldn't care less like myself? Or is it just because it became a meme that the cube got so much praise and why you yourself "like" it?

The only explanation I can think of is during the final boss fight Glados mentions something about the cube being your only friend, I still didn't for the attachment at this point.
I made a topic exactly like this a while ago.

TBH, I felt better about the generic storage cubes because those at least helped me disable a damn turret, while this didn't.

Anyway, it's just a big joke/satire and supposed to be funny, etc.

You didn't miss anything, just people really like to blow shit out of proportion to be part of the "in" crowd, which is why you still get people who spout memes like "The cake is a lie!" any time it's almost applicable.

Sorry for repeating your thread but I searched and nothing came up, also this thread didn't start with the usual "use the search bar" messages that repeat threads get so I figured it was both fine and dandy.

Although judging from the responses not everyone here seems to part of the in crowd Cold Storage gave some pretty reasonable answers

The whole point is that the game made it out to be some object you've suddenly gained a huge emotional attatchement to, when nobody really cared about it.
Umm... I'm nobody? I saw the thing and instantly thought "omg! <3"... not really sure why, but I just felt attached to it...

All meme's aside, I liked what they tried to do, it's just that they failed to get through that outer shell of mine.

I only found it just a tiny bit hard to throw it in the incinerator. My reasoning is that its the only thing in the game, besides GLADOS, that was given any sort of personality (that you interacted with at least). I think that was the point to it. Since there really was nobody else or anything else in the whole facility, except for you and psycho robo-*****, that if you actually ended up feeling something for the cube, then thats saying alot about the environment around you.
