No dyslexia here, I read faster and spell better than most people. I'm also known for being a bit of a prick about it.

I have it and dyspraxia. My brother thinks it's just a excuse and isn't real. What many don't know is dyslexia is a physical thing, our brains are wired differently meaning it takes longer to process information, this is why some need to read things more than once to understand. My dyslexia does not only effect my education but also my social life. But i don't dump my problems onto others. A positive to dyslexia is it's know to improve a person imagination and art skills. Ironiclly i'm a top student in my school.

For years we thought my brother was thick. Then we found out he's dyslexic. Anyway, I know a lot of people who use dyslexia as a shield to excuse them from sloppy work and laziness. Dyslexia takes a few years to overcome but it's worth putting the effort in.

I'm not dyslexic, but I do have dyspraxia (The lesser known cousin of dyslexia), I also have Asperger's Syndrome, meaning that I have double the bad hand eye coordination, and the worst depth perception I think it is possible to have.

Yeah, I know loads of people, I think dyslexia is the number 2 most popular self-diagnosed condition, after asperger's (or "why I have no friends"). ADD is catching up fast though, so watch out.

As for professionally diagnosed dyslexics, I don't know any I'm afraid.

Bah. Many a conversation at my school:

"But I'm actually dyslexic/ADD/ADHD."

"Have you been confirmed by a doctor?"

"No but the learning support people say I am."

"These people have no basis to diagnose, no medical training at all, and you think they can tell you what conditions you suffer from? Please."

"..."

"Spell Dyslexia."

"D-Y-S-L-E-X-I-A"

"Do you think a dyslexic person would be able to real it off as confidently as that?" (I would assume its hard too spell, but when you live with it.... Correct me someone?)

"..."

"Exactly, your a lazy whiny *****."

I hate how dyslexia and things like ADD/ADHD have become the new "in" thing to be. ¬_¬

OT: I'm not

So I'm dyslexic which seems to be pretty common these days I'm just wondering if there is many of us here on the escapist. Feel free to share your dyslexic stories and how it effects you. Myself I find I miss the endings off words (things like ed, ing, etc) and have to take my time making these posts, however the uni gave me a free laptop so its all good.

For those not in the know http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dyslexia and search bar approved
You should join D.N.A. the National Dyslexic Association.

Everyone these days claims to either have dyslexia, ADHD or OCD... its really annoying and makes light of the people who actually have it... and with dyslexia and ADHD you can use it as a reason for being stupid or being a jerk... cant really use OCD as a reason, so I dont understand why people claim to have it when they clearly dont.

I suffered from it badly as a kid though my parents didn't tell me. The phrase "learning disablity" was always used instead. I thought that meant I was stupid!

Anyway, with a lot of work I learnt my right from left and my b's from d's and now as an adult I can read and write well enough.

Never known anyone who was, but i have known a few people who were just bad at reading *g*. You know... you have to train something to get better.

Not to dismiss it as bullshit, but when you ask something like this on the internet, same with Asperger's Syndrome, you will get a few "yes" from people who have "self-diagnosed" it.

Dyslexics are teople poo!

I have always questioned if I have dyslexia, It just isn't serious enough. But I have had moments that people considered dyslexic.
