Poll: The lack of nudity in gaming

Is nudity even necessary to make a good game? I really don't think so. Much like with a movie, nudity is very rarely necessary to get the point of a scene across. Case in point, Watchmen. None of it was really necessary to any part of the movie. A shot of Dr. Manhattan from behind would have been sufficient, but instead Snyder put his dick jiggling in full force on the screen for no real reason. Rockstar did the same with the now infamous full frontal scene that basically could be summed up as "Suck this censors!"

Now, I'm hardly a little sissy boy that gets offended at the site of tits on a screen. As I said, when it's appropriate and works for the scene, then hooray. 9/10 times it's not though and is just gratuitous.

I liked how Mass Effect dealt with nudity, not much was shown but it was still a good idea.It wasn't put there just to promote sales, but to actually add a bit to the emotional part of the game.So I voted for a bit more, other games can do the same.

Why would you want subpar games to feature nudity? Wouldn't that be the same as B-movies throwing in nude scenes to increase ticket sales?

Yes, and it's because of this that B-movies are part of our cultural mythology. After all, where would geeks be without Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness? Where would Ron Perlman's career have gone? B-Movies are an important part of society, and it is because of them our culture has been able to grow.

Give a there should be no nudity option in the poll, adding it would purely waste attention to plot/gameplay/making the game good in favour of making the females breasts perfectly rendered. If its not extremely important to the plot then it would be stupid for games to have it in.

AoC attempt to allow nudity was both completely silly and done well. Some of it set the scene quite nicely in places and added to the whole barbarian + arachy feel. The fact that you could de-robe your character and walk around naked is silly.

Oh look its the mightiest mage in the land......walking around naked again.

Here's my two cents. When you have just a bit of nudity in your game, people overreact. Take for example GTA3 and Mass Effect. GTA3's case was a hack and Mass Effect hardly had any nudity, yet it had that dirty reputation (but oh sure, nude shots in film is not as big of a deal). Effects like these are the reason why developers are afraid to place more nudity in games. Not to mention you would have to decrease your audience, and thinking about how much games cost and how narrow hardcore gaming audience is anyways, it's not a very good idea.

I'm not 12 and get giddy flipping through photography magazines glazing over at the sight of winkies and boobies...

I always had a very fun and healthy sexlife, seen both genders nude in my chambers enough on that level, and grew up in areas of the world not so fearful of sexuality so it's never seemed important for my many decades..

That said....

It goes back to the saying " if it has a place for it and it fits the setting" then I dont have an issue with it.. it's true to life...

you have sex nude " or atleast partially nude" so if the game has a WELL PLANNED scene, I expect to see atleast something.. there are plenty of hentai games if I wanted mindless porn sex...but mainstream wise I prefer a actual story building up to it ( think a slightly more vivid ME scene...but still done more artistically )

hell even streaking in SR had it's place...they could have gone unedited nude.. that would have been fine.. but I also found the combo of that smirk and blurred boxes sorta funny in a way


in closing? nudity for the hell of nudity is sorta childish in my mind, it has it's place in a story or setting and can be done when it's written into the game with a more mature mindset

I caught the satire right away... but do think that it does " rouse" some interesting concepts in the mindset of gamers/developers/ and social bounds
