Really now. Why must people insist so much in deviating from what is the basic form of input in video games? You got the screen, you got the game, and you got the controllers. Why ever should people have to invest multi-billion dollars on dysfunctional motion sensor technology? I know what you might be thinking. Nintendo pulled that stunt with the Power Glove (and failed at it, I should add).

The Escapist's thoughts on this motion sensor trend?

Btw EyeToy doesn't count because those were mandatory for the EyeToy collections and they actually did it right with those. And I request none of you parrot what Yahtzee said about Project Natal (we don't need rabid fanboys repeating his words; I already know it's going to suck).

If they could perfect it, it would be great. At the moment I see it as nothing more than a gimmick.

Wii Tennis for example, everyone I have played flail their arms around like they are in a real game, I flick my wrist without moving my arm and kick their asses at the game every time.

If they made it so real technique means a better shot then it would be ok, but at the moment it just registers it as: movement = swing.

No. I'm a gamer, and I'm a lazy arse. I play games to relax, not to spastically wave my arms around for the amusement of anyone who happens to look in my window.

why doesn't the eyetoy count its the same deviation from the basic form of input though

and people dont 'insist' they respond positively to it because they like it?? And companies invest money into it because it sells.... sounds like you are just raging against something that is popular

Because EyeToy targetted family/party gamers and wasn't just for the extra sprinkling of pennies. It was experimental and innocent, until they made a million versions of the first minigames that were packaged with it.

Why would Xbox 360 and PS3 copy Wii? Wii should be copying 360 and PS3!!! So I don't care but it would piss me off that other companies would copy a system that everyone hates!

Personally, I don't mind motion controls all too much. As long as I can play my games by just sitting on my couch (non of this Natal crap), I'm fine with them.

Companies need to invest money in dysfunctional technology because without that we'd never get functional technology. Nothing invented ever worked perfectly the first time. We have to build on previous motion sensing technologies to fix their flaws.

Gaming sort of got stuck in a rut with last gen controllers and controls. They do some jobs well and the sort of things they do well are made over and over and refined. It's hard to break out of that cycle and everyone gets lazy and thinks that gaming has been perfected.

They are general purpose controllers though. Lots of tasks are done better with older tech like digital arcade sticks, full scale analogue sticks, wheels, hydraulic arcade cabinets, dance pads and so on. The most awesome possibility of motion controls is that we have, in the future, general purpose controllers for the home that do all of these adequately, and more. We will not be locked into only playing dreary twin stick 3D character games with quick time events.

I do think that we need buttons and things to touch and ideally give force feedback resistance. This is why I think that Natal is the flimsiest of the bunch.

I think the sales charts would disagree with you there.

Anyway, I like motion sensors, but I agree that there could be alot of refinement. I look forward to how the PS3mote will handle. It looks like a Wii remote, only with a more accurate sensor device (Camera vs. IR). Natal seems interesting, but I'm not sold on it yet. Overall, I'm happy that all of the developers are working upon improving the tech of motion.

There's nothing wrong with the idea of motion sensors in games, even though the technology hasnt been perfected yet. I think some kind of gameplay innovation is needed considering that gameplay-wise, things haven't really changed that much since 3d graphics came on the scene.

So Iguess I'm voting for "Way of the Future!".

Screw motion sensors. I play games to relax. Flailing my arms around like a retard on speed is NOT relaxing.

I'm okay with Motion sensors, so long as they don't replace traditional control methods completely. ESPECIALLY in handheld and portable gaming.

Take mobile phone games (espeically the, ugh, iPhone), motion sensors are all well and good on say, a Wii, but when you're trying to play a game, and your screen is constantly moving, well, it's pretty damn annoying.

I'm against Motion Sensor, too lazy to flail my arms around waiting for the men in the white coats to come take me away to a home because somebody thought I was insane.

[HEADING=1]What?[/HEADING]

You dare call EyeToy innocent? That's blasphemy in itself. It's the same as the rest of the motion control iterations in terms of it being untested in the market when it was released.

And yet people were asking at the time "why did Nintendo reduce the amount of buttons and stick a stupid directional pad on their controller? It's stupid right? It's basically a step backwards from the joystick and numerous buttons of the past, right?"

When Nintendo released this, there was no guarantee that it would work. To aim their products at everyone, to aim at their existing market (who ***** constantly, but what's new?) and a largely untapped market while utilising tech that hadn't been proven was very risky, and it paid off.

And this is good. Why? Because gaming can advance. It's definitely not perfect now, but it's moving forward, and can be a very interesting alternative. For all you know 20 years from now you could be dusting off your PS3 and showing your kids how we used to use face buttons and motion control was archaic as hell, and no one thought it would take off.

And no one respond to me about gaming advancing through storytelling and concepts please.

I honestly don't like the motion controller initiative. Yes, it was innovative before, but its just a gimmick. Most people who get a Wii love it for a few months then the novelty wares thin. We should've just stuck to ordinary controllers and innovated in other area's instead, e.g. making console's multi-media platforms, pushing digital distribution forward, etc etc.

It's not a coincidence that my favorite Wii games are the ones you can play with the Gamecube controller.....
