having played it at gamescom, I can give you a hearty HELL NO! worth every penny.
I was thinking it was looking a bit too much like wow for my liking. Is it really different?
I've played it at Gamescom as well, the key difference is that everything's story driven, it really is more like a hyrbid of KotOR and an MMO than just an MMO. So you get to have conversations with other characters like in KotOR, or more specifically Mass Effect, and your choices will affect the flow of your story. There's also a larger faction story that has to be done in group conversations and then everyone has to choose an answer and a dice roll will decide which party member gets to answer. And the writing, as far as I've experienced is very well done and pleasantly snappy (for the Smuggler at least).
You don't get any kill X Wamprats/Tauntauns/Mynocks quests from NPCs, they just automatically get added as optional challenges for if you want extra exp. So every order an NPC gives you will be related to the story, like for the Smuggler you start out by deactivating beacons separatists have set up and destroying three turrets they're about to use against Republic targets. Sure you have to blast your way to them but combat is very involved and fun. Smugglers also get a cover mechanic where they get to roll behind a rock or a crate and from that cover they can use additional skills and their damage nearly doubles.
So all things considered, oh yeah, I'm very glad I preordered this and will readily pay the subscription fee. For me my average subscription fee boils down to about ?0.30 per day, that's barely noticeable in your daily budget. And if you buy for three or six months in one go it comparatively costs even less per day of playtime.
Or you could hope EA/Lucasarts goes for a lifetime subscription system, sure it's a huge sum to pay up front (often ranging from anywhere between ?150 to ?250 between the MMOs I've seen), but after that you never ever have to pay for the game again and if you play the game for a few years then you're actually saving money compared to the gamers who keep on subscribing. In fact, if you bought a lifetime subscription for Lord of the Rings Online at launch it was worth about as much as subscribing for 18 months in one go so by the time the game went free to play nearly four years after its release those who got a lifetime sub and were still playing saved a fair bit of money.
