It seems to me that although the old republic looks pretty decent and without doubt bioware is a king of developers but one thing bothers me. Currently even the basic copy of the game is looking at 35 pound according to amazon. That seems like alot when compaired with other pc games. It seems pretty harsh if you remember your only really paying for the first month then have to pay after that.

I have no doubt millions of copies will be sold but do you think its a bit scandelous to charge that much and then charge per month?

$60 gets you a new game that will probably give you around 20 hours of gameplay.

$60 plus $15 a month gets you an MMO with thousands of hours of gameplay.

No, it's not expensive.

The game looks good, but am I right in thinking there's a subscription to be payed after that? Because if there is then yeah, starting to look a little too costly.

having played it at gamescom, I can give you a hearty HELL NO! worth every penny.
I was thinking it was looking a bit too much like wow for my liking. Is it really different?

Isn't that the same price that pretty much all video games are right now? MMO's are naturally more expensive anyway when you factor in the cost of subscription. Over the years I paid like 700+ dollars to play City of Heroes.

Yes, its Star Wars... but by Bioware... and in space!

Yeah, I find it too expensive. I find any P2P MMO too expensive since they usually charge for the box, for the monthly sub and then for any expansion (and possibly some cash shop items). So I'm gonna do exact what I did with Rift. I'll wait until I can get SW:TOR for about £10-15 and play it for 2 months, burn through the content and be done with it.

If these kinds of MMORPGs want people like me playing them and telling our friends to play them, then they all need to go either Free to Play or follow the Guild Wars 2 model (buy the box & have cosmetic only cash shop).

Sad it's pay to play. But I dunno, it looks kind of worth it if i'm honest. I might try it through a trial. But I dunno. I hope it meets my expectations of it though.

That's what I hate about subscription-based games. Just playing one game, can get you spending a ridiculous amount in the end. I just don't think it's worth it when you're mostly doing the same thing over & over again, whilst waiting for the next batch of content.

I've played it at Gamescom as well, the key difference is that everything's story driven, it really is more like a hyrbid of KotOR and an MMO than just an MMO. So you get to have conversations with other characters like in KotOR, or more specifically Mass Effect, and your choices will affect the flow of your story. There's also a larger faction story that has to be done in group conversations and then everyone has to choose an answer and a dice roll will decide which party member gets to answer. And the writing, as far as I've experienced is very well done and pleasantly snappy (for the Smuggler at least).

You don't get any kill X Wamprats/Tauntauns/Mynocks quests from NPCs, they just automatically get added as optional challenges for if you want extra exp. So every order an NPC gives you will be related to the story, like for the Smuggler you start out by deactivating beacons separatists have set up and destroying three turrets they're about to use against Republic targets. Sure you have to blast your way to them but combat is very involved and fun. Smugglers also get a cover mechanic where they get to roll behind a rock or a crate and from that cover they can use additional skills and their damage nearly doubles.

So all things considered, oh yeah, I'm very glad I preordered this and will readily pay the subscription fee. For me my average subscription fee boils down to about ?0.30 per day, that's barely noticeable in your daily budget. And if you buy for three or six months in one go it comparatively costs even less per day of playtime.

Or you could hope EA/Lucasarts goes for a lifetime subscription system, sure it's a huge sum to pay up front (often ranging from anywhere between ?150 to ?250 between the MMOs I've seen), but after that you never ever have to pay for the game again and if you play the game for a few years then you're actually saving money compared to the gamers who keep on subscribing. In fact, if you bought a lifetime subscription for Lord of the Rings Online at launch it was worth about as much as subscribing for 18 months in one go so by the time the game went free to play nearly four years after its release those who got a lifetime sub and were still playing saved a fair bit of money.

I dont believe so.
Its about right for an MMO.
While i would prefer if they moved to a more APB style of subscription,
i think the price is very fair.

well, it's not really earth-shatteringly different, but I think it's different enough to not call it a reskinned wow-clone. combat feels much better and the interaction with NPC's has bioware's prints all over it. characters are interesting (if a little stereotypical at times) from the one conversation I had time for. But all you really need to know is that after waiting in line for four hours and playing 20 minutes, I was ready to get back in line and wait four more hours to have another go and if that's not a recommendation, I don't know what is.

No, it's not expensive.
For one year, you're paying 240 dollars. Then every year after that, 180 dollars.

See, it's all well and good saying it's not expensive, but unless you're playing every single day (which not a lot of people do), it is VERY expensive.

As long as it does justice to all my happy memories of the first two Old Republic games I'll pay. So many hours of lightsabery goodness.

the price is normal, as for those who hate monthly fee, well you need to have a steady income if you want to run all those servers, make new content and pay checks for the employees for years to come. I've been waiting for this game for years and I have never seen a bad Bioware game so I'm pretty sure its fair to say that my WoW days are finally over for good when this game comes out

I would give it a try but I don't think they will have a trial or anything. Even if it was a one day trial period that would get me interested.

But when Guild Wars 2 comes out, it will help prove that you don't need to force players to pay for a monthly subscription, or cash shop items (in order to be competitive) to release and support a AAA MMORPG.

To release, sure.

To support... remains to be seen.
