Actually I am OK with banning works like this, it's been my observation of people as a group that if you allow them to say whatever they want "****" is normally what they come up with. Honestly I don't necessarily think that all creative works do have a right to be freely published anywhere.

Note though that when I say 'ban' I mean 'ban from import to the UK' rather than 'eliminate from existence'. Different groups of people define their rules as they see fit after all, I've no right to tell Japan what they can and can't make. But frankly I am a tentative proponent of censorship as long as it's used properly. It's not a case of either anything-goes or V for Vendetta, there is a useful and happy middle ground in there.
To each their own, I s'pose. I just fear even the tiniest bit of censorship because of what happens when idiots get to control said censorship. That's why I equally stand up for kiddie porn. Because when everyone agreed that it needed to be banned, we in America ended up with a law making a 17 year old into a pedophile if they take a shirtless picture of themselves and send it to their boy/girlfriend. Permanently.

And there's a law which I think passed that allows for pedophiles to be jailed indefinitely without trial. So no defending yourself.

Give someone an inch and they'll take a mile. I'm alright with letting a few folk wank to rape-fetish material than risking some chunk of our constantly waning freedom.

(Not that I necessarily disagree; I don't like it one bit either, but I'll defend it to the death)

It's rape porn. Rape porn exists in book, film and comic form and always has, mostly legally and without causing a firestorm like RapeLay did. So, whether rape porn should be banned is up for debate, but singling out RapeLay for a ban would be discrimination based on medium and set a precedent for video games not getting the same freedom of speech protections as other media.
the difference is that those media aren't interactive. there's a difference between freedom of speech and encouraging people to engage in a horrible crime that ruins lives
Every medium is different. You could argue that film shouldn't get to portray things literature does because it provides a graphic depiction as opposed to just words, and with video games the magic word "interactive" gets trotted out every time to say, "yes, but this is different!" with no further elaboration needed.
viewing something on your own time and being forced to do something to advance are different things, that's just how it is. i'm one for allowing video games to do what they want for the most part but this is beyond (for me) any artistic license justification. you don't need elaboration. acting something out is more connected to patterns in the brain than viewing it. they're different things.

Sorry for the late reply:

Nice post, very informative. However if you read any of my posts on this thread you'd learn that I'm in favour of this game, I hate banning, so fuck you for the neighing, bro.
If, however, you're just addresing 'yous' in general, sorry
