If the movie was a turd, I won't watch the special features, but if it's great, I love seeing all the footage I can. Ie: I have the Lord of the Rings trilogy on 12 discs, and have watched all the content on every disc multiple times, including watching the extended versions of the films (3.5-4.5 hours each) normally, then again right after with director commentary.

If a film's mediocre, I may watch some of the extra bits, but not with the intensity of the films I love.

Yeah, it took a long time, but every now and then I still go back and watch Fellowship and all extras (approx 12 hours) one day, Two Towers the next (another 12) and Return of the King the third day (13 or 14 hours). Yeah, I'm a bit obsessed over it. There are a bunch of other films I watch all the extras for, but none as lengthy as LotR.

I can imagine.

Do you feel like you get actual, genuine value from things like commentaries, then? I'm more in the camp that I think it spoils the magic knowing that, say, Lembas Bread was actually just a bit of cardboard painted yellow. (I'm joking, but you get the jist?)

What's odd is considering how much I love movies and film making, I really don't care about special features.

I want to watch the movie and that's it.

Though, I always end up getting the special editions because the box is typically cooler looking.

Never will even touch the second disc.

If it's something that I'm really into, like Lord of the Rings, then yes, otherwise not really.

Most of my movies are 2-disc special editions, so that should answer your question. But, if I find a movie I like with just the one disc, I'll buy it. In the end, I still get to watch the movie. Granted, for some reason, I like the 2-disc editions more.

Admittedly sometimes the special edition boxes are a lot nicer.

I love the LotR extended edition boxes that have a single still underneath a thick cardboard sleeve with a transparent window (I'm not describing this very well, but I hope folk know which ones I mean) - they look fantastic.

Exactly.

Here, I'll give my most recent purchase as an example.

Take one of my favorite movies ever; M by Fritz Lang

Recently, they released a new Criterion Edition that is 2 discs. As someone who doesn't care for the second disc of special features, I didn't care which one I got. The new Criterion or the 2005 edition since they were both the same price.

However, after looking at the boxes of them, I went with the new edition as I think it's much cooler looking. Weird way to judge a movie? Sure, but it works for me ^-^

I'm huge into cinema, so I love knowing how things were done. For example, the way they fucking BUILT Edoras, or built Hobbiton - it wasn't CGI, those were actual buildings, constructed specifically for the film.

I especially love horror films, finding out how they did the gore effects and such. That's my speciality.
