Just now i saw a post that said
almost 99% of all people who play valve games are begging for a new engine
Now i for one don't have a problem with the engine and think it looks great, a lot of my mates also think this way. So i was curious as to how accurate this statement was and decided to ask a larger audience. You.

How many valve fans think that they need to make a new engine?
Is the current version fine, with updates each release?
Or should they build a new engine?
Should valve make a new engine, or focus on releasing quality games

Whoever posted that must have a masters degree in bullshiting.

I can't recall even once where someone desperately wanted a new Source engine.

Current engine is fine for me. I think they should stick with it and keep making, and continuing to support the communities for, excellent games. Just like they are doing now (my opinion).

I like the current engine. My pc can't take any better graphics anyway. Valve was really on a roll with the Source engine and awesome games, they should continue that trend.

I have nothing against Valve's engine personally. Okay it isn't top of the range but it is good enough that the games don't lose out on atmosphere and I have never found myself playing a game of theirs and thinking "This could looks nicer".

Shiny graphics are great, but unless they are terrible then I am not that fussed by them. They should stick with what they have and just update it where necessary.

On a side-note: Your avatar is from '12 Angry Men' is it not?

I have no problem with the source engine. Honestly I'd rather look at a really high quality Source game, than most games that use the Unreal Engine. Yeah maybe it's not as high of a poly count but it just looks cleaner to me.

12 angry men it is.
yeah i agree with you there, the graphics only getting the updates here and there is good, no it doesn't look super shiny and stuff, but instead of wasting time with making new engines and making some shine they use the time to create quailty games, imagine how long games would take to make if they did spend more time on graphics.

Especially as they are Valve... Episode 3 taking forever and Portal 2 apparently being pushed back for next year.

I don't think I ever said, that I want a new Source engine. The current is fine. It may be a bit outdated but they polish it with every new release and even if it can't compete with crysis, it still works fine. In the end graphics don't matter that much for me anyway. I guess Valve will make a new engine when the current Half-Life 2 story arc will be finished and they'll release a complete new hl game.

I agree with you there, most of the games now have everything shining so much with so much bloom and HDR, its like the Dev's don't go outside to actually see that a little bit of sun on your arms doesn't actually make them shine like a florescent tube.

If they ever do make a new engine, my computer probably can't support it. The current one works just fine, why change it?

Considering that they've been doing a decent job at upgrading the engine (the L4D edition is quite a bump up from the Orange Box edition, in my opinion), I can't see why they would need to urgently overhaul it wholesale.

valve takes no risk at keeping the same old thing over and over again
You crazy kids and your trolling.

Now, on with my real post. The source engine itself works fairly fine, perhaps it is comeing towards the end of it's life, but being that it's a fairly solid and well designed engine (Aside from a few bugs) it should be around for years and years untill it's final no longer useful.

For me Half-Life 2 on max looks like crysis for me. It just looks so smooth.
Have you played crysis? if so what settings? cause i play HL on Max and crysis on medium and crysis still looks better. Not to say that the Source engine looks bad, but to compare the to is a bit unfair.

I'd like there to be a new engine... will make level design better.
This does not follow.

You can make great levels with a bad engine, and terrible levels with the best engine ever.
