You know, the thing about most of the end of the world prophecies is that they say "The world as we know it is going to end." The key words are "as we know it" for all we know that could mean we find Mass Effect technology and the Reapers start coming to eat us.

My vote goes to WWIII. I would dig a fallout shelter in my backyard, but 18 inches in, it is just solid rock. Missouri soil can really suck.

True fact, you're more likely to die getting hit by a car or choking on pizza before the world end, but really, I have to say out of all the random things to happen to the earth Option 4.

with all the science we do with genes and vaccines we make to "cure" illness eventually someone will go OOPS and create that vial containing a the human extermination virus...

now that I think about it there was a game I played on newgrounds called Only Once Chance, I think, but yeah that's probably mostly likely to happen.

Resource-wars leading to nuclear annihilation, most likely. If we manage to sidestep that somehow, probably a 'gray goo' scenario where nanotechnology spirals out of control, learns to self-replicate unchecked and consumes every last ounce of biomass on the planet.

In about 5 billion years, our sun is going to become a red giant. That would be the end of our world, and it would be spectacular.
Except we will not live to see it. In 2(or 3) billion years, our galactic cluster is going to collide with another one. That will throw everything in our galaxy around on a scale immesurable. Thats propably when everything will end. And since it will effect our entire galactic cluster, we have absolutly no chance of making it out in time.

Ooh.. I'm torn between super virus and resource squandering. It would suck if both happened at the same time.

I think the CURRENT world is going to end by way of 'accension' I.E. Humanity is visited upon by beings of a greater intelligence that teach humanity how STUPID it is being and allows them to 'evolve' into greater beings (that is, to become LESS stupid).

Plus, if it came to society having to rebuild itself to a self-sustainable state. The head of this society would be a yorkshireman.

Yorkshire! :D

good old honest brodband.
WHO WOULD BUY BROADBAND FROM YORKSIRE?
People...from...Yorkshire?

Plus I go with the Hicth Hikers Guide to the Galaxy method of world ending. I.E. We will come to learn the purpose for all that is in the universe and that, thereof, the universe will be immediately replaced by a far more complicated one.

Sun goes kerblooey, but we'll all be long gone by then. Either that, or man-made virus. That's be interesting.

Well...like you said, that really depends on if you mean the planet, or humanity. If you mean the planet, it'll melt when the sun goes red-giant.

If you mean humanity? If we run out of petroleum before we can start using alternatives on a large scale, that's likely to mark the beginning of the end. It'd start a chain reaction. Of course, a virus could also do it.

Lack of resources possibly leading to WWIII. Makes me cheerful thinking about how the world is going to end.

I got inspired by another thread where I initially wanted to post this, but this went a bit to far off topic. So I decided to make a new thread for it.

I know that there is a lot of end-of-world talk, but I am not specifically talking about Mayan calendar or biblical references. No, its more in a general sense. Also, for the record, I'm not paranoid and I do not worry about the end, because there is nothing you can to about it, if it should happen.

Also, saying 'end of the world' always sounded odd to me, because it's not the world that's ending (short of a super nova/black hole or massive meteors), but it's mankind that's ending. The world will probably be fine long after mankind bit the dust. Yeah, I know, it depends on your definition of the word 'world'.

Anyhow, to the actually topic. How do you think the world is gonna end?

I didn't have room to fit option 9: mankind is gonna live forever.
End? The world won't end. It will merely change.

The leading theory in the poles seems to be that we'll chew up all of our natural resources and that'll be the end but will it really? I mean people live in Mongolia and throughout the Sahara just fine and there's literally nothing there.

Oil? Every car maker on the planet is sinking big money into electric and hybrid vehicles and some of them are really starting to do amazing things. Cadillac put out a hybrid escalade a while back and it's AMAZING and shows a true sign that you can combine ecofriendly with style and luxury.

Water? pollution is a difficult thing but salt water doesn't have to be salty forever, it can be distilled.

Coal pollution? Wind farms are popping up everywhere. The middle of America is a magical place dominated by thousands of miles of farmland with little in the way of hills and mountains to interrupt wind flow.

Rain forests? Doing anything to a rain forest these days has become so demonized that it's on par with selling black tar heroin and child porn to nuns. And a few groups are actively trying to plant new trees throughout north and south america.

And on other froms Nuclear power is coming a long way. I mean it took a Tsunami and an earthquake to cause trouble for the plant in Japana and I mean really.... what wouldn't have issue with getting slapped with a Tsunami and an earthquake?

The world as we know it ends because the sun finally expands to the extent where Earth ceases to be a viable option for habitation, the seas boil away to nothing and the planet instead becomes a baked, radioactive wasteland.

Luckily, some of Jupiter's moons are theoretically capable to supporting life, with a little terraforming, mankind can therefore use these and other planets to build space-colonies and leave their old world to burn.

And all food will be in pill form.

According to Second Law of Thermodynamics and the whole idea of entropy and arrow of time in any isolated thermodynamic system entropy will increase, with increase of entropy we go from order to chaos, hence World will reach the state of chaos at some point. Of course modern science argues whenever the arrow of time applies to quantum physics and whenever the presence of anti-matter does influence the arrow of time...

Now of course, in common nomenclature, end of World means end of mankind, behind if we don't exist we cannot experience the world nor describe it. How exactly will it happen? Too many possibilities, some of them we might not even be aware of. We could be blown up by alien doomsday device, we could simply die due to some sort of infection, Sun could collapse, comet could hit us before we manage to colonize another planet, degradation of eco-system could cause our extinction.. or just like dinosaurs - for no obvious reason.
Most likely neither will happen any time soon however so not much of a concern.
