it made 1.7 billion (I think), and because of this, everybody I know hates it.
Gonna have to stop you there, that's a classic cause and effect flaw, as The Dark Knight has proven, a film can make a fuckton of money and still be loved, meaning that the money a film makes has no bearing on how people think of it.
I hated the film, not because it made money, but because it was shit. Not my genre, didn't like the actors, general disinterest.
Not necessarily. It could be the money a film makes has no impact on public opinion provided box office takings are below a billion. It's not going to be a purely inverse linear relationship, otherwise a film that makes no money (or next to none) is the greatest film ever made. Personally, I like Waterworld, but not that much.
And "Not my genre, didn't like the actors, general disinterest" do not make a movie shit. I didn't really care for the romance plot, but it's a damn pretty film. It was pretty unashamedly boat-porn. The romance plot was just there to give the actors something to do whilst the audience admires the pretty pretty ship.
