Unlike everything else in the horror genre, i found Saw's plot actually above average. more than i can say for Quaratine, Pulse, and Deadspace (good game though).

I watched Hostel 2.
It's definitely one of the stupidest movies I've ever watched. I mean, just the ending. American College girl cuts of a womans head with a extremely large axe. Then the head rolls to a group of kids who start playing soccer with it. The end.

Oddly, I don't see the comparison between these two films....I like Saw in the same way that I like Silence of the Lambs and other Psych-thrillers- the game and the ins and outs of every trap I find fascinating, the plot line is very intelligent, and the reasoning behind each character and act of contrition makes up for the icky stuff. Saw also has minimal nudity (unless it's actually part of the trap) so I don't see where the evidence is to simply label this a "Titty Torture" flick and cast it aside.

From what I have read, I think more people would have responded better to Hostel if it hadn't been marketed as simply a torture flick...people actually got up and walked out because the level of torture was NOT OBSCENE ENOUGH...yes, it has a minimal plot line (people in other countries get their cherry popped over torturing an American, to the point where they pay top dollar; whoo hoo). I have not seen Hostel, it's just not intelligent enough to warrant my time.

as much as these films disgust me, I actually like the first two Saw films. Third was alright, and I never saw the next two.
Watch them just to say you did; you might be pleasantly surprised.

The thing you have to remember about Saw III and Saw IV is that the main plot lines are happening at EXACTLY THE SAME TIME IN THE SAME BUILDING.

You know...that funny part about this is that I hate these movies because they bore me. I have no problems with "torture porn," but how many times does a dismemberment / disemboweling seem fun and bloody?

Only once. Then it is old and boring.

No, I don't like them. I guess I understand why they are so popular, but I can't watch them without getting sick. Someone showed me the intro for Saw II, the one with the guy in the death mask and the key to the mask in his eye. Hated it. I couldn't for the life of me watch that thing with my eyes open. Nor could I understand why someone even thinks these kind of films are even worth making, but that's just me being a pussy.

They bore me to tears. They wouldn't be too bad if they were actually scary, but their creators are too fucking dumb to pull off even a simple scare.

I think the only reason these movies are so popular is because of all the press that comes with them and the controversy. Not to mention they are the ones who thrive on shock value and these days the only way to be shocking is to just be fucking disgusting. As much as I respect Quentin Tarantino as a director he got really carried away with Hostel, the first half is essentially tit shots and an almost American Pie atmosphere... then second comes endless torturous violence that really impacted me when that poor girl got her eye burned out. It was nasty for me especially as she looked a lot like someone I knew so I had to look away. Seriously it was way too gross and it makes me ask questions about the people who watch that stuff.
Sex then Violence, as much as it disgusted me I have to admit... Hostel is more or less a symbol of the two main things we tend to expect to see in todays entertainment industry. A perfect analogy, that's sooo sad.

wow, I'm surprised with the results, 360 people in not a small sample group and we can see a very strong trend against these movies. Yet they still were financial successes, odd.

They should be banned, just to force some damn creativity back into horror movies! Same for remakes of Japanese horror.

I really do not receive any pleasure whatsoever from watching these films, yeah they are disgusting to ME, but my mother and her boyfriend for example enjoy watching these films (though I don't know how) so I don't wish for them to be banned as to not be selfish.

I like my gore ridiculous, and unrealistic, so both Saw and Hostel are out for me.

Also, I don't do movies with serious amounts of tension/suspense in them. Makes me feel ill. And I hate seeing people turn on one another. I couldn't watch the Mist for that reason.

But I'd argue that Hostel and Saw are different sorts of films really...well at least the first Saw movie. The first Saw was essentially psychological terror, wheras Hostel will always just be faux snuff porn.
