Having just played God of War and God of War II before moving onto the third i started wondering "Did i really need to play these first two, older, less graphically stunning games to really enjoy God of War III?"

Now, despite the story not really being the main draw to God of War i still can't help thinking that i'd be missing out on a lot of the story in the third game and i've gotten to play through Kratos's struggles and seen his hatred and bloodlust grow. I think the story that i've played through is amazing and i'd say playing the third game without the other two would be akin to watching just the last Season of Lost... it'd dillute the overall experience.

Then i started to think about other trilogy's i've played. Halo, and same thing... having been through the world with the characters in the older games made the whole series that much more interesting to me.

Gears of War is probably going to be the same but the story is shit... so i dont know about that.

There have been several sequels to game's i've played without going through the original. Half-Life 2 comes to mind. While i enjoyed the story and game for what it was, and really never felt like i needed the original to understand what was going on would the second have been better if I had played the original?

Does skipping a game in a series dilute your experiences?

No.

You need to play all the games to enjoy the full experience, but if just one of the games entertain you in the slightest, you've enjoyed an experience.

I didn't play the whole of the halo trilogy and I have no doubt my life is the better for it.

I find that you can skip a game, ut you miss so much more. Its just like wathcing a new series for something that didnt end on a cliffhanger. If a person comes in, youll have no idea who they are or what they have done, but you get by, its usually re-told anyways. But you miss alot of things and its usually a better experience if you play through everything.

You wonder why people play the previous game before the release of the sequal? So they can remember as much as possible for the next game.

EDIT: Just saw the poll, lolfail.

I normally get the entire trilogy. The only ones I didn't get were Halo 1 and Half Life 1. Both series were confusing for me as a result. But nevertheless I enjoyed Halo and some parts of Half Life 2.

You need them to get the most out of a series, but it's not really nesseccary as such.

How is that even important?
How isnt that important to my point?

I'm trying to say why i play these older games in series that are no match for the new generation games as far as graphics and the like go just for the full experience. Then i ask why others do... or dont.

Graphics look nice, that is all they do. the gameplay won't be better because of them and neither will the story.

No you're right Alpha. I'm probably just not trying to say what i want to clearly perhaps.

If i could just play the third game, having never played the first and second of God of War, why would i buy and play those older two games? I have many new games i still have to play but i went back and played these PS2 games just so i could fully enjoy God of War III, its world and story.

I didn't need to. I probably would have enjoyed GoWIII plenty without having done that but I did, it just made me curious and i am not trying to hark on the importance of graphics or anything like that, completely not the point im trying to convey.

not necesary but i must say prince of persia wouldn't have been such a godsend if it was seperate.

although one could argue that it isn't really a trilogy now that the forgotton sands comes rushing to the party.

I recently bought the God of War Collection, its the first to games for the PS3, with slightly enhanced graphics etc, just so when I do play the third, I'll be clued up on everything.

I concur. Choosing not to play Halo first time around is probably one of the better decisions I have made in my life.
