So, I saw a thread about a man planning on fighting and possibly killing a lion for political and economical gain. So, that had me thinking. Should there still be events in which a man or woman fights another man or woman or even animals?

I can see an event such as this racking in money for the countries involved, and this could be like the new Olympics except... with people stabbing you in the neck instead of racing you. Also, it provides major entertainment.

On top of that, I can see this as a way of rehabilitating prisoners. I can personally see this as a good thing, but of course people will disagree with me. After all, we all have our own opinions right?

So, what do you think about this? Should Gladiator events exist today?

Also, this is my first thread. ^_^

Nowhere in this modern world would anyone allow it. As for if people would want it? Weeeeeeell.....

They probably still wouldn't. Even if two people consented, I don't think anyone would like a bloodsport in this day and age. It'd be pretty fucked up. Too brutal a sport, and too violent to allow anyone to watch it.

Also when looking at your title, three things came to mind for me, one was that radio ad in GTA III where prison inmates are armed with rocket launchers and fight to the death in an arena.

Another was obviously Mad Max, and the third was Halo, because every time I play multi-player and throw down a bubble shield, I chant that constantly.

UFC+Boxing?

Only difference is the degree of brutality, principly identical.

If two consenting then whatever, but that shit should be locked *tight* from minors.

Sounds like a good way to thin out the prison system.

But I dont think they should. That kinda gore and death is only good when you're ina conquering mood, like the Romans were.

THUNDERDOME!!!

Okay, so you got me in here with the Mad Max reference.... now I guess I have to answer, even though I find this topic a little unsettling.

The very fact that this is mentioned in a serious matter makes me extremely concerned about the state of the world today.

Should gladiator event be done today? Well, if the participants agree to it willingly, I see no reason why not (you know, except for ethics and morality and shit like that). Then again, you are talking to a guy who wishes dueling was still legal...

With voluntary participants, sure. Prisoners should not be used for entertainment against their will. However, if they choose to be, sure why not.

While I appreciate the Mad Max reference, how would gladiator style combat help with rehabilitating prisoners? I mean wouldn't it make them more violent?

Away from the public eye, I know for a fact there is animal vs animal fights to the death (queue: Michael Vick) and really, man vs. animal is no different than hunting except the human has the advantage of surprise and general the animal is passive. As sad as it is, I could definitely see gladiatorial fights having a somewhat dedicated following. Whether or not they could organize themselves and fight for legal protection remains to be seen.

The catalyst for such an event occurring would be whether or not we have the need for strong, capable, warriors in the same way that they were needed in ancient Rome, where certain warriors would actually be granted fame and privilege for doing well.

Sounds like it could be entertaining, and like some one else said good way to thin out the prison system.

Gamers are surprised when the media views them as violent and easily swayed by games. I see polls like this on a gaming website, and I cease to be surprised.

This question and your poll question are different (importantly so). For this question, the answer is no, because people aren't at a majority stage where they can deliberately exhibit/watch aggression towards another person without actually being 'violent'[footnote]Or maybe those terms ('aggression' and 'violence') should be switched ... for agression I mean the actual fighting event should exist? Absolutely (though only with consenting humans). Because if people get to a social/emotional stage in which aggression doesn't mean violence then it could be a great means of developing and promoting physical abilities in the wider population (basically encouraging people to push their own physical limitations), without the bloodlusting investment that would be present today. Seriously, as a way of testing and extending our own capacity for physical action, it would be great, more as a test of skill then a display of violent tendencies (think of the difference between watching a challenging and amazing dance/gymnastic-event/etc, and watching two guys beat each other in the face for the primitive pleasure drawn from another person's pain.
Also, this is my first thread. ^_^
Congratulations, and not a bad first topic either.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and rehabilitating prisoners? Really? If you mean that they can have an outlet for their aggression while they try and reform to fit the wider society, then I'd guess that you are more likely to promote violence than reform prisoners. If you mean anything else ... you may be a little insane or sadistic (potentially both?).

Well Max, there WAS this one kickass show that went on for a while called Celebrity Deathmatch (obviously fictional), but that eventually got itself cancelled. I think people would pay good money to pit Beiber against someone else we don't care about who's in the news all the fricking time.

Is that even a punishment for murderers? I bet they'd enjoy gladiatorial combat.

Well probably not. Especially if its a public event. Just imagine how fucked up kids would get after hearing that they can go into arenas and kill each other for money and whatnot.

NOT. GOOD. AT. ALL.

P.S. That would also cause some seriously messed up mental trauma for a lot of people. Best to put the idea away.
