In today's culture violence is quite prevalent and most people like to choose videogames as the scapegoat. Yes, many videogames promote violence and off-color behavior, but then again the world has always been violent and will most likely stay a violent place. Also, violence exists, and in most instances higher volumes, in places where videogames are almost non-existent. Violence is everywhere and to point the finger at videogames is absurd.

Score 0 for creativity/originality with this thread :(

EDIT:
well sometimes it's not so much the video games, but the people who are playing the video games. So, I personally believe that video games can share some of the blame, but it's wrong that most of the time it takes the brunt of the blame.

Video games are what stop me living out my vengance in real life. The irony being that someone like me who was mocked will end up worse off than the idiots who mock me, because my negative features developed from that. SOCIETY IS TO BLAME.

Seriously? You're asking this question on a gaming website?

OT: No, of course not. The gamers I know are a lot nicer and less violent people than the non-gamers.

I'm afraid that you just NINJA'D everyone with your OP, my friend.

I was just watching T.V. and like always people were screaming "Videogames and movies are poop! They turn our children, our future, into rabid mouth-foaming mutants that shoot lasers out of their eyes and cook delicious bricks of human flesh! Also, Rock & Roll is the work of Lucifer himself!"

Let us think about this logically, which came first?

Cruel, sadistic ways of killing, maiming and torturing other humans and other 'anti-social [non-helping] behavior'?

Or video games which depict them?

The film 'SAW' is practically centred around a mysterious individual doing horrific and sadistic things to individuals, now there is plenty in those films that somebody could try to emulate (and I'm sure someone, somewhere has) but we don't suspect everyone who's watched it of possibly being a serial killer and complete monster.

People have always used a scapegoat to justify their senseless, meaningless actions of violence. Be it religious extremism(crusades anyone?, lead paint(Hitler), or music(Marilyn Manson or however you spell that prick's name), something has to take the fall for little Billy's decidedly suicidal rampage through the school. Video games are a budding art form and haven't established a dominant foothold like other forms of violent entertainment, like, say, UFC or Boxing where grown men beat the bloody hell out of each other and get paid to do it. You don't see these getting banned nbecause they cater a bit too well to the adult point of violence, while video games cater to children. There IS a rating system for a reason. Give me a good reason why Billy's mom bought his six year old ass Grand Theft Auto 4 in the first place and I'll happily sit down politely and never say another word about bad parenting. Parents: grow some balls and tell your kids "No." Remember when THAT was good parenting? Stupid new age hippy parenting bull shit...

What I find absolutely hilarious[footnote]As in it brings my blood to a boil[/footnote] is when video games are blamed for an office worker shooting up his workplace and turning his supervisor into salsa chunks. Then the media focuses on their video game habits instead of considering that maybe said suspect worked a dead-end job with little play, no benefits, long hours, is at risk of being laid off, an overzealous supervisor, and under constant pressure from those around him, who just happens to cool off at home with a few games of Modern Warfare 2 and a glass of wine.

Video games have pretty much been a scapegoat for psychotic behavior well before Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold decided to play "Tag" at their local high school. Even in the days when a shooter game was in 7-bits video games were being blamed for violent crimes, and almost every time the whistle blowers lacked sufficient evidence other than their own say-so.

Video games don't create killers, society's pressures and a lack of hugs do.

Yes. I personally think it's all the games' fault and everyone who plays them is on the same level of evilness as Hitler.

Now, seriously. This is a gamerforum. WHAT THE FUCK kinda conversation are you asking of here? Everyone has more or less the same opinion on the topic here. It's pointless.

maybe so, but is the public becoming desensitized and more accustomed to violence because of the media and culture, which includes video games? Video games are not the cause of violence, but in some instances it can have an effect. Maybe in the OP I didn't explain myself as well as I should have.

Yes actually. I have played video games since I was three and now only have the urge to drive really fast down the interstate throwing turtle shells and banana peels out my window while eating mushrooms I randomly find.

Seriously: No. They may be a factor in violence today but they are not a sole or main cause.

Movies are more to blame if you are taking that argument. They have a much larger audience than video games and people are more likely to want to emulate them.

Video games causing Violent children is just a way the media/the child in question can point the blame at. Although if the evidence does support that it does have a connection then I feel that video games should be the target for bans and such because this is the PARENTS fault for buying the game, if the game has a rating higher then the childs age then the PARENTS should't buy it.

It may be the reason, but do you know why? Little kiddies playing 18 or M rated games.

Damnit, I wanted to say that. Bastard. *Goes on an office shooting rampage*

Sometimes, video games may be a part of the equation, but really it all boils down to how psychologically stable the subject really is.
