Sorry, this really has no discussion value, but this is something that needs to be heard.
I just watched a news report saying that welfare money from EBT cards is being used at ATM machines located and gambling establishments like casinos and bingo halls.
To me, this is just sick. If someone is on welfare, they are supposed to be using that money for living expenses, as it is TAXPAYER MONEY
So far, the total amount of welfare money being spent at gambling halls in Minnesota alone has pushed past $25,000. That money could have been used by over 120 families to LIVE for another month.
I guess, if there is discussion, it would be: Is it right for people to use welfare money to gamble?

no its not. and i think welfare should be harder to get, and unless otherwise specified slowly reduced annually to provoke more people to try and get jobs

Of course not, if they can afford to gamble they don't need welfare money.

In no sense of the word is this 'right'.

I agree that it's a waste. I don't gamble at all, and I don't think people earning their money should spend it at casino's, let alone people on welfare. Considering that gambling is a hobby, have a look at how many people on welfare buy games? or pay for a WoW subscription?

I know it's not really very expensive to play WoW, and if you spend all your free[footnote]ie. not time spent studying or looking for a job[/footnote] time playing WoW rather than doing pretty much anything else you'd probably some off with more money.

I think the problem is that people who don't deserve welfare get the money. I don't really care how they spend it as long as they deserve it.

Is there information somewhere with the amount of welfare money being spent at casinos and then is there also information on the proportion of the nation's budget spent on welfare? Also, is there a place with the requirements in order to receive welfare? This is a lot to ask I know but I think with these pieces of knowledge we can really get a good discussion out of this other than simply knee-jerking over a news report which is exceedingly well at its purpose at the moment, and I don't want to let the news succeed.

Well, there are worse ways to squander a welfare cheque. Unlike prostitution and drugs, a portion of the money lost to a casino goes back to the government via gambling revenue.

Really it's not much different than spending the poggie on booze, firearms or tobacco.

No they should NOT. Now sure, they might have a gambling problem and thus might need help to stop. But they have to want to stop, and if being on welfare hasn't bludgeoned the thought into their heads that maybe they need to start using their logic centres I don't know what will...

This stuff bugs me. They ruin it for the people who actually need and want help.

If there's a reason they're on welfare, then I for one would be loathe to condemn or regulate how they spend their money. Being unable - rather than unwilling - to work shouldn't impair personal freedom to live out your life as you see fit for the money assigned to your survival, poor choices and all.

Of course not. People are given that money due to their lack of jobs and their incapability to actually earn money. It needs to be stricter laws regarding welfare users spending.

The attitude of most governments is; You get a set stipend and if you manage to keep your living expenses under that amount, you have money left over and good for you. If you can't keep your living expenses under that amount, stiff shit and a pile of debt for you.

In Oz 'wefare' covers pensions as well, and if you tried to tell an Old Age Pensioner that they shouldn't be gambling with 'taxpayer money' you'd probably get a walking stick jammed up your arse. The old fuckers love their poker machines.

There's no question that it's both stupid and a slap in the face to taxpayers to use welfare money at a casino - however I doubt it's well-adjusted people gambling with their welfare. Gambling addiction is a recognized thing and it's probably how those people ended up below the poverty line in the first place.

Taking a few lottery tickets is ok by me, but spending it all in a casino?

That is just wrong.

I agree.
Normal people don't do this.

Why is this even a poll? The only people who are going to say yes are gamblers who are on welfare.

I always get bothered when people say stuff on here that will hit a few nerves and don't provide a source.
So, I found one for you:
http://articles.latimes.com/2010/jun/24/local/la-me-welfare-casinos-20100624
Its almost a year old but does add a little credibility. Cheers mate.

OT: There is a reason why they build casinos in poorer neighborhoods.

I don't know how it works where you are from, but in my country we pay a certain amount out of each paycheck towards pension.

So your pension is truly yours, and not welfare.
