Fair play to you, Mr Rhombus.
Lot of hate here for the welfare recipients. According to a recent report (summarised here [http://www.google.com/publicdata?ds=usunemployment&met=unemployment_rate&tdim=true&dl=en&hl=en&q=us+unemployment+rate]) the jobless rate is pushing 10% in the States right now. I know a lot of these poor buggers won't be taking welfare because of the stigma attached, but that still leaves a tremendous number on government life support- up to tens of millions, by the figures.
According to the website linked above, Minnesota has a 6.8% unemployment rate and a population of about 5.25m. By my simple calculations, if as many as 1% of their unemployed are going to casinos, they're only spending $7 each to make up that $25000 number, although you don't say how long a period this money was doled out over. A month? A year?
Have any of you guys complaining about where your hard-earned tax dollars are going ever been laid off? Been unemployed for a long period? I have, and the impact on self-confidence is incredible as knockback after knockback rolls in. Overqualified, not enough experience, too much experience in an irrelevent field and flat out "no"s. I'm not surprised that a small number of these fellas in Minnesota are going out and either trying to win big or just enjoying the glamour for a while betweeen disappointments. Or, as others have said, maybe a few of them just have a problem- in which case they deserve help, not disdain.
