Following from recent films like Watchmen and the reenvisioned Batmans how awesome would a series of Warhammer 40,000 films be? Dawn of War style! So long as not given to Uwe Boll I think it'd be incredible, especially if rated a 15+ so we can get some real 'darkness of the universe' stuff in it.

Such a huge backstory, there'd be potential for dozens of films...

What does everyone think?

They would have to do some about the horus heresy. Thats the best bit of 40k history if you ask me

Edit: What would also be good would be the second and third wars for armaggeddon. You have gaurd, space marines and a horde of orks with a great backstory. Its also probably most peoples favourite period after the heresy. And if you did the second one, you could have the scene where Yarrick loses his arm and raoed everyone sideways. Then you would also escape the problem of capturing the general amazingness of the primarchs and the emperor

i agree. the heresy is awesome. Theres tons of fluff, so theres a lot of possibilities. something with the guard would be sweet, because of all the tanks, and its going to have to include chaos in there somewhere :D

It would only be good if they said nothing but "For the emperor!".

And they'd shoe in some god-awful love interest sub-plot crap, too. So it would suck.

OOh, do want, the 40K universe is so brilliantly dark and gothic, a film set in it could be incredible.
Would require a big budget to do everything justice, but if done well it would be awe-inspiring.

It would only work if it was based upon the Imperial guard and possibly, the inquisition.

In the 40k universe, most races are defined by their mood sets and nothing really changes. Sadly it's a little too bland to really do any kind of film about it.

The characters just aren't as interesting or as malleable as a film would need them too be.

Watching ninety minutes of Space Marines shooting xeno's down and shouting zealous cries, would hardly be anything on an epic scale.

It wouldn't even need half the budget of a Star Wars incarnation!

Obviously you'd have to develop a good story from the info in the books as well as the 14,000,000,000 White Dwarf mags. A love story might work, but only if it was a tragedy! I.e. Emperor's betrayal by Horus. They could always use Eisenhorn or Ciaphas Cain, although that could result in a disturbing comedy...

Let's see, requires gigantic ammounts of CGI to make everything look even remotely decent, setting is unmarketable exept to the core audience and said core audience will boycott it anyway because of a single misinterpreted scene in the trailer.

Not going to bother.

Which is my point, you could only do it about a handful of characters, if you where going to get away with it at all.
Seeing a Space Marine fall in love with an Eldar Farseer would be heresy, for fans and the Imperium.
It's potential moves like that, that make me think this isn't such a good idea. No matter how much I want it.

i have some scenarios that would be cool:

Horus Heresy.
the Assault of Hive Fleet Behemoth.
the 13th Black Crusade.
the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Armageddon Wars.

I think a film based on the Ciaphas Cain books would be unique - a coward unwittingly lauded for accidental heroism! That's a real character!

Difficult to do. To really make it a good film it would have to be of interest to more than just hardcore fans of the tabletop game (Which will be hard enough by itself) making it be problematic at best.

You'd probably have to do a fresh start with regards to story as this is the case, you'd need to leave well enough alone the characters that do exist in 40k and make a new one be it inquisitor space marine or whatever.

As a personal preference I'd rather they left 40K to the realm of books and games, but if there was insistence of some form of cinematic entertainment I'd go with a series of short CGI pieces like the recent sstar wars clone wars series.
