In RPGs: I tend to be a barbarian/Warrior or any class that can run in, cause a mess and still survive. I don't know why but I find ranged classes boring compared to running in "guns blazing". Though when I played WoW (last two expansions, minus MoP) I enjoyed healing more than tanking or DPSing. DPSing was just dumb fun, while healing had the risk of failure. (which would you have? 1 of 6 healers go down or 1 of 17/18 DPS go down?)
In FPS: I like to play as a spy (TF2) despite sucking at stealth in games (at least against players. I did complete Deus Ex: HR without killing anyone OR being spotted (except for bosses, ofc).
In DnD: I think I'll combine a Rogue/Necromancer, just because the only character I've made that I am somewhat proud of making fits into that archetype, and since he's a villain, I think it would be cool to RP as an evil character.
It really just depends on the game.
