Thing is, at our school, if you're carrying around a portable harddrive, you're not a nerd. It implies that you're too cool for school, and therefore have to download your games onto a harddrive to play them at school.
I have a 160g harddrive which I constantly use at school to play Starcraft, Simcity, and other low-tech games (because of the fossils we have in our "computer lab").
Although I'm not one of those people who don't manage their grades and social life... They're the real nerds.

Oh, so you're not, my mistake! Well in that case it probably varies by region but 'pendrive' is fairly usual in the UK.
I may have picked it up from "foreign" media at some point, so you may still not be wrong. It's just taht in the US, I don't see it called a "pen drive" often.

Mine are all named and like my HDs named after mythical creatures.

Except the one with all my drivers n' crap on it which is called RESSURECTOR because a) I couldn't be bothered to look up how to spell it and b) I didn't have a computer to spell check on when I was assembling the stuff for it.

I simply call it "The Stick".

I have called it USB on occasion.

Once I think I even called it an "asshole".

(That's a Robo-Cop reference there, mods.)

For me little one, I call him Pip.
Then there is my external hard-drive which I call the 'render farm'.
My lil Pip is good enough for most word docs.
But I work with video content, so lugging a 1Tb HDD isn't that bad of an idea.
Worst thing is, it still won't be big enough for everything.

I just call it a USB usually. When I tell someone to toss me that USB I don't think they are going to remove the port from their computer so I usually don't worry about adding stick to it.

I have never heard the name "nerd stick" before, but from today onwards, that's what I'm calling it. I don't even fucking care what I used to call it before today, it's nerd stick or nothing.

e: how has only one other person picked nerd stick? it's a hilarious name

External Drive.

I have many, some flash, some HDD, so one name really can't cover all.
Anyone else miss the days of the tea coaster? oops, I mean, 3.5" floppy.

"Pocket memory", or "USB stick".

The 1 TB drives are amazing if you can't decide which anime you're going to bring with you, not to mention the fact that you'll never need to think "Drat! I left that file at home."
Also games.

I call mine Peanut because it vaguely resembles a peanut. In reality it's a Walkman Bean MP3 but it has a built in USB port thingy so I use it for storage.

Nerd Stick?

Sounds hilarious when used ironically, but if anyone uses that seriously.....

I mean, what percentage of people hear that, and don't think "Um, are you talking about a dick?"

I either call it a flash drive, USB drive or screw it up and call it a USP drive (USP is a type of H&K handgun).

I'm just curious, and I find it funny that all I hear here is "nerd stick" when everybody has them EXCEPT the uber nerds who actually carry around portable hard drives because apparently a 2-4 GB stick isn't enough for homework so they carry a 1 TB brick

EDIT: USB* - By calling it a "USB" I mean "USB/USB Stick/USB Drive"
any name with USB in it pretty much
I call it all those cept' for nerd stick.
