What a silly question. A game becomes an adult game on its 18th birthday.

I would consider any game that I wouldn't want my kids playing to be an "adult" game, and that includes games like FarmVille.

I've always considered games Mature if it contained no cursing or swearing, and had artwork capable of shaming the Mona Lisa. It'd also have to contain no immature humor, gratuitous scenes of gore or violence, sex (just for the fun of it, but sex is okay if used as a serious topic), and it has to have puzzles that weren't invented by my little brothers daycare.

Games I consider "mature" include: Legend of Zelda, Okami, Harvest Moon (most of the time, excluding Tree of Tranquility), Alan Wake, and Final Fantasy.

My thoughts exactly.

I'm with the OP on this one. Like I've said time and again, when I see games like FEAR and GTA, I picture a group of thirteen year olds sitting around a TV thinking that they are hot shit in a champagne glass because they are playing a game that has the word "fuck" in it.

It's why Nintendo falls victim to what I dub the "Barney complex". In an effort to look more like adults, teenagers lambaste Nintendo for making "childish games" much like a younger child goes through the whole "I hate Barney" phase in an effort to look less like a toddler.
The problem is that the mature games on the Wii are, unfortunately, few and far between. The last one I managed to get my hands on was Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, which had *far* better nuance and restraint than anything else I'd played that year - Dragon Age included! Beyond that, though, is that the mindless little fluff games (e.g. Mario Galaxy and Boom Blox!, not to mention all the utterly crap 3rd party titles) are what get produced en masse on the Wii, since they'll have the most mass appeal.

Well spoken!

When ever I hear the words "adult game", I think of something that is probably rated AO and just centered around sex.

Adult games would be something like God of War with lots of violence and gore and "bewbies".
Mature games would be ones that make you think. Bioshock's the only example I can think of right now, but I'm sure there are more.

Really? Anything rated M? Because we all know how mature and adult oriented MadWorld and Halo are... The best example of an adult game I can think of is Heavy Rain. It's the kind of thing that most kids really wouldn't like... everything about it was very... tasteful as well. Except for the nudity... that didn't have to be there...

I agree with both of these guys. We can say that subtle nuance makes an adult game, but that is pretty subjective.

There could be some really bright kids out there that appreciate subtlety, nuance, and restraint...but probably not too many youglings can handle certain levels of blood and gore.

It's clear games themselves are able to distinguish between the term "adult" and "mature". In the press I hear way too much about adult games and all the commotion it brings with it.

I'd rather hear more about mature games!

Essentially this.

However, I understand that the Half Life series does have sublety, nuance and restraint; it also has blood and gore. I do see where you are coming from, the gore isn't the key selling point, whereas the story and depth is, but it is present.

"Mature" rated games are usually a misnomer. Games like, say, Grand Theft Auto Vice City, are rated Mature because they are violent and raunchy. This strikes me as immature because they are are violent for the sake of violence. Games that are rated Mature, but have a sort of seriousness and 'mature' air to them, which I can't currently think of a game that is that way, but I will edit If I can think of one. One that comes to mind because of the content of the story is Heavy Rain, but I can't use that as an example because I've never played it, and don't know if that maturity carries over to the rest of the game.

BIG AMERICAN TITTIESS

But yeah people expect blood, violence and that ^^^

but realistically if a game can make a 30 year old shit himself or turn away in horror, then the themes of the game are more adult, but they do not neccesarily make an adult game.

good point... i was generally following the classifications example (pg, g, blah blah etc, different if your american i think...), but i tend to feel that something geared more towards adults would by more subtle, etc, etc... blood and gore may "require" a pre-defined age to technically watch/play it due to the whole "lets not spoil our children and turn them into desensitised mass murderers" thing, but subtlety and nuance seems to be more... i dunno... mature and thus a more "adult" expierence, rather than just a cheerleader getting her head cut off...

I'd have to say, anything with an over excessive amount of gore and flesh flying around (See: Gears of War chainsaw fights). Swearing, cussing, sex, and the rest of that stuff I see prepubescent boy's playing. Not that that is particularly.. good persay, but I tend to be fairly liberal when it comes to content. If they can see/hear it in real life wherever they go, they can play it on a video game.

Porn... That is "adult"... Subtlety could only be "adult" if you're mature enough to notice it.

Exactly; I know more than a few people who would be considered "adult" but have all the subtlety of a bulldozer. Sex is something that you have to have working genitals for so I think those games should only be restricted from young children and the elderly...

An adult game should include either full nudity, extreme violence and gore, horror.Pick your poison

Also the sticker 18+ on game nowadays it seems to be irrelevant, because the majority of the kids who call themselves "gamers" and are under 18 will still find a way to play that game even though "they are now allowed".

My 2 cents and a nickle.

I couldn't agree more with this. It really pisses me off when people hate on Nintendo because they're making colourful games. Who cares, they're FUN! Just because they didn't pump out "Brown Ultra-Violent Cover Based Shooter 36" doesn't make their games childish. The games may be suitable for children, but they aren't designed for children. Rated E for everyone should perhaps be taken a bit more literally.

To me, a game like the recently demoed Bulletstorm is immensely childish. With lines like "You scared my dick off", how can people not notice it's obviously pandering to young teens attracted to swear words and lots of gore to prove how grown up they are?
